Materials:
 The book SAMMY SPIDER’S FIRST HANUKKAH by Sylvia A. Rouss
 Printed pages with dreidels on them
 Printed pages with a spider on it
 Colored markers
 Colored pencils
 Crayons
Standard: CCSS.ELA – Literacy. R.L. K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters,
settings, and major events in a story.

Objective: Students will be able to describe characters, settings, and major events in a story
using key details with assisted prompting and support in a discussion group with 90% accuracy.

Procedure:
1. Introduce: Show the book SAMMY SPIDER’S FIRST HANUKKAH by Sylvia A. Rouss.
Then say, “Today we are going to learn about the special holiday called Hanukkah. Do
any of you students know what Hanukkah is?” The teacher will have a short discussion
on the holiday of Hanukkah.
2. Read: Teacher reads the book aloud to the entire class, and after each page the teacher
turns the book towards the students, so they can look at the colorfully illustrated page.
3. Discuss: Students will be asked to answer five questions pertaining to key events in the
book.
 Question 1: How many nights are celebrated in the holiday of Hanukkah?
 Question 2: What are some of the special foods people eat on Hanukkah?
 Question 3: What is a dreidel?
 Question 4: What type of animal is Sammy?
 Question 5: What did Sammy want very badly?
Activities:
 Students work independently creatively coloring printed pages with dreidels on them.
 Students work independently creatively coloring printed pages with a spider on it.
Evaluation:
 Teacher sits with all the students in a group and asks the students to discuss the holiday
of Hanukkah.
 Teacher asks the students what a dreidel is.
 Teacher checks for accuracy on the students feedback as to what type of animal Sammy
was, and what Sammy wanted very badly.
