The
Investigative Judgment

"UNTO 2,300 DAYS (PROPHETIC YEARS): THEN SHALL

THE SANCTUARY BE CLEANSED."
FOREWORD

• • . . . 'rhe solemn scenes of tho judgment; tho groat day of

atonemont, shouhl bo kept before the poople, and urged upon their
cOllscionces with earnestness and power. The subject of the sanet-
n:try will give us correct views of tho importance of the work for
this time . . . NOlle should become careless, blinded to the wants
of the cause and the perils that attend every soul; but each should
srel( to ho a channel of light." (5']-' 421.) " . . . I flLn bidden to
say to you that you know not how soon tho crisis will come. It is
stealing gradual1~' upon us, as a thief. 'rhe SUD shines in the heavens,
passing oyor its usual round, and the heavens still declare the glory
of God; men are pursuing their usual' course of eating and drinking,
l'hinting anel building, l1lal'l'ying and giving in marriage; merchants
are still engagecl in buying and selli ng; pUblications are still issuing
pne upon another; men are jostling one against another, seeking to
get the highest place; pleasure lovers are still attending theatres,
horse races, gambling hells, and the highest excitement prevails; . but
proiJa tion 's hour is fast closing, and every case is about to be eternally
derided. Tllere are fe\v who believe with heart and. soul that we
have a heaven to win and a hell to shun; but these show their faith
by their works." (CT 413,414.)
'rhis series of lessOlls has been prepared to bring again this im-
portant subject to the study of all for 110 one knows how much longer
t.he day of [Jrobatic·n will linger. Events show us ever more insistently
th.at, . Men will soon be forced to' great decisions, and tlleY
must have opportunity to heal' amI to unc1.erstand Bible truth, in order
that they Illay ta ke their stand intelligently on the right side. God is
now en Iling upon His messeJlgNs in no uncertain terms, to warn the
cities while mercy st.ill lingers, and while multitudes are yet susceptible
to the converting influence of Bible truth. -Review and Herald, April
7, 1910." (Ev 25,26.)

May the Spil'it of God impress these precious truths upon every
Ileart and lead to a deeper understanding and searching out of the
wol'!( of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary, so that all may feel, " . .
,,-oe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" (I Corinthians 9 :16.)

the people of unconfessed sin. All known sins were to be sent before-
hand to the sanctuary.

" . . . In the sin offerings presented during the year, 11 substitut.e
had been accepted in the sinner's stend.; but the blood of the victim
hnd not made full :ltonement for the sin. It had only provided a means
by which the sin was transfel'1'ed to the sanctuary. By the offering
of blood, the sinner acknowledged the authority of the la IV, confessed
t.hc guilt of his transgression, and expressed his fnith in Him who
was to take aIVay the sin of the ,yol'ld; hut he was not cntirely I'elensed
fro111 t.he condcmnation of the la,,-. On the Day of Atonement the high

thus in figure transfel'l'ing them fl'om himself to the goat. The goat
then bOl'e them away, and they were regarded as forever separated
from the pcople. "-GC 420.

shadow of the heavenly (Heb. 8:5), what solemn phase of the
heavenly service must have also been prefigured? Daniel 7:9-14.

prefigure a judgment day?

. ' It (the cleansing of the Sallctuary) pref'gured the closing
work in the ministration of our High Priest in heaven, in the removal
or b'lotting out of the sins of His people, which are registered in the
heavenly records. This service involves a w01'k of investigation, a w01'k
of judgment; and it immediately prec"edes the coming of Christ in the
clouds of heaven with power and great glory; for when He comes,
every c·ase has been decided . . ." -GC 352.
"In the great day of final award, the dead are to be 'judged out
of those t.hillgs which were writ.ten in the books, according to their
works.' Revelat.ion 20:12. Then by virtue of the atoning blood of

-6-
N(j'£J<;: The Jews regarded the day of atonement 8S a day of seaHng'.
, , Especially in the closing work for the church, in the
sealing time of the one hundred and forty-foUl' thousand who are to
stand without fault before the thron.e of God, will they feel most d.eaply

in behalf of penitent believers, secured their pardon and acceptancc
with the j<'ather, yet their sins still remained upon the books of record.
As in the typical service there was a work of atonement at the closc
of the year, so before Christ's work for the redemption of men is
completed there is a work of atonemellt for the remova,l of sin from
the sanctual'Y. This is the service which began when the 2300 days
ended. At that time, as foretold by Daniel the prophet, our High

reported to Jesus that his work was done J and the saints were nUlll-

"The proclamation of the first, second, allCl third angels' messages
has been lOCH ted by the Word of Inspira tion. Not a peg or pin is to

not proclaim it. jyIartin Luther placed the judgment about threl"
hundred years in the futUJ'e from his day. But since 1798 the book 01'

having made an atonement for all Israel, and thus removed their
sins from the s-anctu:'ll'y, came forth and blessed the people. So it was
believed that Ohrist, our great High Priest, would appear to purify
the earth by the destruction of sin and sinners, and to bless His
-10-
waiting people with immortality. The tenth day of the seventh month,
the grel1t D.3,y of Atonement, the time of the cleansing of the sanctuary,

angels, they had, to a great extent, withdrawn from the society of
those who did not receive the message. With intense desire they had
prayed: 'Come, Lord Jesus, and come quickly.' But He had not
come. And now to take up again the heavy burden of life's cares
and perplexities, ancl to enrlure the taunts I1nd sneers of a scoffing

Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem, His followers believed that
He was a,bout to ascend the throne of D:lvid and deliver Israel from
her oppressors . , . The disciples were accomplishing the purpose
of God; yet they were doomed to a bitter clisappointment. But a
few days had pl1ssed ere they witnessed the 8l1viour's Ilgonizing
rlr.ath, and laid Rim in the tomb. Their expectations had not been
rel1lized in 11 single particular, and their hopes died with Jesus. Not
1 ill their Lord had come forth triumphant from the grave could they
perceive thl1t all had been foretold by prophecy, and 'that Christ must
needs ha ve suffered, and risen again from the dead.' Acts 17: 3. "
-Great Controversy, pages 404,405.
"In Ii I;e manner Miller :md his assoeia.tes fulfilled prophecy and
gave a message which Inspiration had foretolel should be given to the
world, but which they could not have given had they fully understood
the proph('cies pointing out their clisappointment, and presenting an-
other Jl1e~sage to he pre:1ched to all nations before the Lord should
c:ome. The first and second angel's messages were given at the right
time and acer, mplished the work which God clesiglled to accomplish
by them." -Ihid., p. 405.

THE CLOSING OF PROPHETIC TIME

Key Text: Revelation 10:1,2.
QUESTIONS:
1. Wl!Jre all the prophecies of Daniel to meet their fulfilment &1'1
l8le same time? Daniel 12:4,9.
NO'l'J<.;: " . . . The prophecies present a succession of events leading
down to the opening of the judgment. This is especia.lly true of tlle
book of Daniel. But that part of his prophecy which related to the
last days, Daniel was bidden to close up amI seal 'to the time of the
end.' Not till we reach this time could a message concerning the
judgment be proclaimed, based on a fulfillment of these prophecies "
-Great Controvel'sy, page 356.

Z, What class of people only would understand the true meaning

of t~le events described in the book of Daniel? Dan. 12,:10,13.

NOTE: II Vlhenever men are not seeking, in word and deed, to be

in harmony with God, then, however learned they may be, they are
liable to err in their understanding of Scripture, and it is not safe
to trust to their explanations. When we are truly seeking to do
I..od's will, the Holy Spirit takes the precepts of His word and
makes them the principles of the life, writing them on the tablets
of the soul. And it is only those who are following the light already
given that can hope to receive the further illumination of the Spirit.
'fhis is plainly stated in the words of Christ: 'If any man will do His
will, he shall know of the doctrine.' " -5'1' 705.
3. What is re'presented by tlte angel clothed with a cloUd, and
haVing in his hand a little book open? Revelation 10:Z,

NO'!'.!!:: • I . . . By pen and voice we are to sound the procla.mation,

showing their order, and the application of the prophecies that bring
us to the third angel's message. There cannot be a third without the
first and second. These messages we are to give to the world in publi-
cations, in discourses, showing in the line of pl'lphetic history the
things that have been and the things that will be.
I'The book that was sealed was not the book of Revelation, but
that portion of the prophecy of Daniel which related to the last days
. . . 'rhe book of Daniel is now unsealed, and the revelation made
by Christ to John is to come to all the inhabitants of the earth. By
the increase of knowledge a people is to be prepared to stand in the
latter days." -28M 105.
-12-
4. What is the extent of the message to be given by this angel
with the little open book? Revelation 10 :2,5.
NOTE: "The message of Revelation 14, proclaiming that the hour
of God's judgment is come, is given in the time of the end; and the
angel of Revelation 10 is represented as having one foot all the sea
and one foot on the land, showing that the message will be carried to
distant lands, the ocean will be crossed, and the islands of the sea will
heal' the proclamation of the last message of warning to OUl' world."
-28M 107, 108.

5. What outstanding declaration is made by tlIis angel in giving his

world-wide message? Revelation 10:6.

NO'l'1';: "This time, which the angel declares with a solemn oath, is
not the end of this world's history, neither of probationary time, but
of prophetic time, which should pl'ecede the ,.dvent of our Lo·rd. That
is, the people will not h.ave another message upon definite time. After
this period of time, reaching from 1842 to 1844, there can be no definite
tracing of the prophetic time. The longest reckoning reaches to the
autumn of 1844.' '-7BC 971.
It is evident that in the little book "open" in the hand of the
angel is a message containing pr"phetie time. This angel declares
tha t the prophetic time mentioned in that hook is ended.
6. What particular book of the Scripture did the angel Gabriel sa,y
should be sealed and later be unsealed? Daniel 12:4,8,9.
7. What time in the history of the world is meant by the state-
ment made by t!his angel with the little book open? Rev. 10:6-8.
8. What was the nature of this world-wide message, and what
was its after-effect? Revelation 10: 9,10.
No'rIo;: "Ve find other scriptures where the prophet is commanded
to take a book and to eat it. (See Jeremiah 15:16; }<~zekiel 3:1-3.)
The eating of the hook indicates that the messenger is to give the
message eonklined in the boole 'J'he message of a soon coming Saviour
was indeed a sweet message, but the misapplication of the event,
proclaimeil l)y those who gave the world-wide messa.ge to take place
at the end of the prophetic time, the 2300 d·ays, resulted indeed in
'I hitter experiellce.

9. Following the bitter disappointment, what command did the angel

give to the pro-phet .John? ReveJ,ation 10:11.

personage than Jesus Christ. Setting His right foot on the sea, and
His left upon the dry land, £h(·",s the pal't which He is acting in

-7BO 971.
10. Immed1at.ely following this command of .the a.nrel, what doell
tile prophet say was given him? Revela.tl1on 11:1.
NUT.E:: " 'rhe gospel dispensation is the last periOd of probation
that will ever be granted to men. Those who live under this dispen-
sation of test and trial .and yet are not led to repent and o~ey will
perish with the disloyal. There is no second trial. The gospel that
.is to be prea.ched to all nations, tongues, and peoples presents the
truth in clear lines, showing that obedience is the condition of gaining
eternal life. Ohrist imparts His righteousness to those who consent to
Jet Him take away their sins. We are indebted to Ohrist for the
grace which makes us complete in Him (MS 40, 1900). "-7BO 971,972.

LIGHT ON THE SANCTUARY TRUTH

Key Text: Revelation 11:19.
QUESTIONS:

1. Wherein had the Advent believers been mistaken in their pro-

pII1etic intlerprDtation? Daniel 8:l4,; Revelation 14:6,7.

NurrE: "Those who proclaimed this warning gave the right meSlllll'e
at the right time. But as the early disciples declared, 'The time is
fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand,' basei! on the prophecy
of Daniel 9, while they failed to perceive that the death of th" Meniah
was foretold in the same scripture, so Miller a.nd his associates preaehed
the message based on Daniel 8:14 and Revelation 14:7, and failed to see
that there were still other messages brought to view in Revelation 14,
which were also to be given before the advent of the Lord . . . "
-GO 352,353.

" . . . The mistake had not been in the reckoning of the pro-
phetic periods, hut in the event t<l take place at the end of the 2300 daY8.
'l'hrough this errol' the believers had suffered disappointment, yet all
that was foretold by the prophecy, and all that they Jwd any Scripture
·warrant to expect, had been accomplished. A.t the very time when
they w"re lamenting the failure of their hopes, the event had taken
place which was foretold by the message, and which must be fulfilled
before the Lord could appear to give reward to His servants.' ' Ibid.) 424,

2. What sublel't, of study proved to be the key which unioclted th&
mystery of the disappointment of 1844? Hebrews 3:1; 8:1,2.

NOTE: ''l'he subjeet of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked
the mystery of the disappointment of 1844. It opened to view a
complete system of truth, connected and harmonious, showing that God's
hand had directed the great advent movement ::Ind revealing present
duty as it brought to light the position and work of His people . . .
Now in the holy of holies they again beheld Him, their compassionate
High .Priest, soon to a'ppear ·as their king and deliverer. Light from
the sanctuary illumined the past, the present, and the future. They
kne"" that God had led them by His unerring providence. . . ' '--GO 42<3.

3. Instead of coming to earth as was expected by the advent be-

lievers, how did Ohrist fulfil the type of the earthly high priest on
the Day of Atonement? Da.niel 7:13; 8:14.

NO'l'E: ' 'Christ had come, not to the earth, as they expected, but,
as foreshadowed in the type, to the most holy place of the temple
of God in heaven. He is represented by the prophet Daniel as coming
at this time to the Ancient of Days: 'I saw in the night visions, aJld,
behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, llnd
came' - not to the earth, but - 'to the Ancient of Days, and they
brough t Him Ileal' before Him.' Daniel 7: 13. -GO 424.
J)

4. What other prophet of the Old Testament had also referred to

tlb.is event!'? Mala.clli 3: 1.
NOTE: "This coming is foretold also by the prophet Malachi: 'The
Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly. come to His temple, even th&
Messenger of the covell ant, whom ye delight in: behold, He shall
come, suith the Lord of hosts.' Malachi 3:1. The coming of the Lord
to Hi" temple was sudden, unexpected, to His people. They were
not looking for Him there. They expected Him to come to earth, 'in
flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that
obey not th e gospel.' II Thessalonians 1: 8. " -GO 424.

5. To what place in the heavenly sanctuary was the attention of the

believers directed? Were the people who were looking for Christ
to come actually ready to meet Him? Revela.tion 11:19.
NO'l'E: •• Bu t the people were not ready to meet their Lord. There
was still a work of preparation to be accomplish.ed for them. Light
was to be given, directing their minds to the temple of God in heaven;
and as they should by faith follow their High Pri('st in His ministra.tion
there, new duties would be revealed. Another message of warning
and instruction was to be given to the church.)J -GO 424,425.
-15-
6. What w()rk of purification must be accomplished in those who
will be ready for translation when .resus comes?Malachi 3 :2-4.
NOT.J<]: . Those who are Jiving upon the earth when the inter-
cession of Christ shall cease in the sanctu:ny above are to stand in
the sight of a holy God without a mediator. Their I'obes must be
spotless, their characters must be purified from sin by the blood
of sprinkling. 'rhrough the grace of God and their own diligent effort
they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the investi-
gative judgment is going forw·ard in heaven, while the sins of penitent
believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be a
special work of purification, of putting 1,way of sin, among God's
people upon earth. . .
"When this ,,-ark sha II have been accomplished, the followers of
Christ will be ready for His appearing. . . ." -GC 425.
7. What paralJlle of Christ represented the COming of Christ as our
high priest to the most: holy place? Matthew 25 :1-12.
NOT.J<]: " . . . this is also represented by the coming of the bride-
groom to the marriage, described hy Christ in the parable of the ten
virgins, of Matthew 25.
" . . . the proclamation, 'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh,' was
given. 'rhe two classes represented by the wise and foolish virgins
were then developed-one class who looked with joy to the Lord's
appearing, and who had been diligently preparing to meet Him;
allother class that, influenced by fear and acting from impUlse, had
been satisfied with a theory of the truth, but were destitute of the
grace of God. In' the parable, when the bridegroom came, 'they that
were ready went in with him to the marriage.' The coming of the
bridegroom, here brought to view, takes place before the marriage.
The marriage represents the reception by Christ of His kingdom "
-GC 426.
8. Who is represented by the bride in this pa,rable.? Who are the
guests? Revelation 21:9,10; 19:9.
No'r.J<]: . . The Holy City, the New Jerusalem, which is the
capital and representative of the kingdom, is called 'the bride, the
Lamb's wife.' . . . Clearly, then, the bride represents the Holy City,
and the virgins that go out to meet the b;ridegroom are a symbol of
the church. In the Revelation the people of God are said to be the
guests at the marriage supper. Revelation 19:9. If guests, they cannot
be represented also as the bride. Christ, as stated by the prophet Daniel
will Teceive fl'om the Ancient of Days in heaven, 'dominion, and glory,
and a kingdom;' He will l'eceive the New Jerusalem, the capital of
His kingdom, 'prepared as a bride adorned fol' her husband.' Daniel

-16-
7:14; Revelation 2i:2. Having received the kingdom, He wili come
in His glory, as King of kings and Lord of lords, for the redemption
of His people, who are to 'sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and
Jacob,' at His table in His kingdom (Matthew 8:11; Luke 22:30), to
partake of the marriage supper of the Lamb." -GC 426,42·7.
9. How dO the wise virgins go wiW:l. the bridegroom to the marrlage'i
Matthew 25:10.
NO'l',r;: . 'I'hey were not to be present in person at the marriage;
for it takea place in heaven, while they are upon the earth. The fol-
lowers of Christ are to 'wait for their Lord, when He will return from
the wedding.' Luke 12:36. But they are to understand His work, and
to follow Him by faith as He goes in before God . .
" . . And all who through the testimony of the Scriptures accept
the same truths, following Christ by faith as He enters in before
God to perform the last work of mediation, and at its close to receive
His kingdom-all these are represented as going in to the marriage."
-Great Controversy, pages 427,428.
10. What Slhould be understood by the "shut door" of Matthew 25:107
Did this mean that the "door of mCirey was s1Ult"7 Rbv. 3:7,8.
NOT,r;: "But clearer light came with the investigation of the sanctu:
ary question. They now' saw that they were correct in believing that
tlote ena of the 2300 days in 1844 marked an important crisis. But while
it was tru.e that that door of hope and mercy by which men had for
eighteen hundred years found access to God, w·as closed, another door
was opened, and forgiveness of sins was offereil to men through the
intercession of Christ in the most holy. One part of His ministration
had closed, only; to give place to another. There was still an 'open
door' to the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ was ministering in the
sinner's behalf." -GC 429,430.

A MESSAGE OF SABBATH REFORM

Key Text: Revelation 14:12.
QUESTIONS:

1. Within two months after the disappointment in Oetobe!', 1844,

What gift was restored to those who had accepted the- light on
the Sanctuary truth? Amos 3:7; Pl:!. 97:11; I Sam. 3:19·21.
-17-
NOTE: ' , It was not long after the passing of the time in 1844, that my
first vision was given me . . . ~While we were praying, the power
of God eame upon me as I had never felt it before." -LS 64.
"I related this vision to the believers in Portland, who had full
confidellce that it was from God. 'J'hey all believed that God had
chosen this way, after the great disappointment in October, to com-
fort and strengthen His people. 'rhe Spirit of the Lord attended the
testimony, and the solemnity of eternity rested upon us. An un-
8peakabJe awe filled me, that I, so young and feeble, should be
chosen as the instrument by which God would give light to His
people . . ." -Ibid., p. 68.
2. Wllat outstanding characteristics were to make the remnMlt
church? Revelation 12:17; 19:10.
3. When the believers followed their great High Priest by faith
into the most holy place, to what was their attention specially
directed? Revelation 11:19; Exodus 20:8-11.
NOTj<;: . When the temple of God was opened in heaven, the
ark of His testament was seen. Within the holy of holies, in the
sanctuary in heaven, the divine law is sacredly enshrined-the law that
was spoken by God Himself amid the thunders of Sinai and written
with His own finger on the tables of stone.

"'rhe law of God in the sanctuary in heaven is the great original,

of which the pl'ecopts inscribed upon the tables of stone and recorded
by Moses in the Pentateuch were an unerring transcript. Those who
arrived at ,an understanding of this important point were thus led to
see the sacred, unchanging character of the divine law . . ." Great
Uontroversy, 433, 434.
"The Spirit of God impressed the hearts of those students of
His word. The conviction was urged upon them that they had ig-
norantly transgressed this precept by disregarding the Creator's rest
day. 'l'hey began to examine the reasons for Observing the first
day 01 the week instead of the day which God had sanctified. They
could find no evidence in the Scriptures that the fourth commandment
had been abolished, or that the Sabbath had been changed; the,
blessing which first hallowed the seventh clay had never been removed.
They had been honestly seeking to know and to do God's will; now, as
they saw themselves transgressors of His law, sonow filled their hearts,
and they manifested their loyalty to God by keeping His Sabbath
holy." Ibid., pp. 434,435.
4. What is the secret of 1Jhe opposition to the clear exposition of
the Scriptures t!hat revealed the ministration of Christ in the
heavenly sanctuary? Luke 11 :52:; II Thessalonians 2:11.
-18-
NOTE: ".M:,any and earnest were the efforts made to overthrow
their faith. None could fail to see that if the earthly sanctuary was
a figure or pattern of the heavenly, the law deposited in the ark
on earth was an exact transcript of the law in the ark in heaven;
and that an accept, ance of the truth concerning the heavenly sanctuary
iuvolved an acknowledgement of the claims of God's law and the
obligation of the Sabbath of the fourth commandment. Here was
the secret of the bitter and determined opposition to the harmonious
exposition of the Scriptures that revealed the ministration of Christ
in the heavenly sanctuary. Men sought to close the door which God
had opened, and to open the door which He had closed . . ." -GC 345.

5. What class of wo,rshippers is described by the prophet Ezekiel

as perverting the true service of the sanctuary? Ezekiel 8:15,16.

.NU'l'E: By the Lord's dil'e("tion the entrance to the sanctuary was

eastward so that those who gathered before it to worship the true
God had their backs to the rising SUIl, ill direct contrast to the idolatrous
sun-worshippers.

6. What is the burden of tlle message of the firSit angel of Reve-

latlion 14? What is necessary in order to worship God as the
Oreator of the heavens and earth? Rev. 14:6,7; Eccl. 12:13;
I John 5:3.

.NUTE: '''rhe duty to worship God is based upon the fact.that He'
is the Creator and that to Him all other, beings owe their existence.
And wherever, in the Bible, His claim to reverence and worship, above
the gods of the heathen, is presented, there is cited the evidence of
His creative power ', -GC 436,437.

7. Which only of the ten commandments points directly to God

as the Creator? What class of people are brought to' view as the
result of the throofold message of Revelation 14:&-12.? Exodus
20:8-11; Revelatlion 14:12.

NUTE: '" 1'he importance of the Sabbath as the memorial of'

creation is that it keeps ever present the true reason why worship is
due to God '-because He is the Creator, and we are His creatures.
'The Sabbath therefore lies at the very foundation of divine worship,'
for it teaches this great truth in the most impressive manner, and no
other institution does this. The true ground of divine worship, not of
that on the seventh day merely, but of all worship, is found in the
distinction between the Creator and His creatures. This great fact
can never become obsolete, and must never be forgotten.' . . ."
-Great Controversy 437,438.

-19-
a. In contrast to those who keep the commandments of God and
have the faith of Jesus, to what other class of people does the
third angel point? Revelation 14:9,10.
9. When was the time appointed for God's people to be specially
t,ested by 'the sabbath truth? What ha.ve the enemies of God's
trutlh been doing from tlhat time until now? Dan. 8:14; Rev. 3:7,8.
NO'l'1:: "I saw that the present test on the Sabbath could not come
,until the mediation of Jesus in the holy place was finish eel and He
had passed within the second veil; therefore Christians wh'o fell
a.sleep bef.ore the door was opened into the most holy, when the
midnight CIY was finished, at the seventh month, 1844, and who
had not kept the true Sabbath, now rest in hope; for they had not
the light and the test on the Sabbath which we now have since that
door was opened . . . .
"'l'he enemies of the present truth have been trying to open the
door of the holy place, that Jesus has shut, and to close the door of
the most holy place, which He opened in 1844, where the ark is,
cont.aining the two tables of stone on which arc written the ten com-
mandmC11ts by the finger of Jehovah." -EW 42,43.

3. W110 was brought before the Ancient of Days? Daniel 7:13,14.

N 0'l'J;;: " . . '1'he coming of Christ here descl'ibed is not His second
coming to the earth. He comes to the Ancient of Days in heaven to
receive dominion and glory and a. kingdom, which will be given Him
at the clOtle of His work as a mediator. It is this coming" and not His
second adv.ent to the earth, that was foretold in pl'ophecy to take place
at the termination of the 2300 days in 1844. Attended by heavenly
angels, our great High Priest enters the holy of holies and thcre

with a voice of deop pity cried, •My blood, Father, My blood, My blood,
My blood!' '1'hen I saw an exceedi!1g bright light come from God, who
s·at upon the great white throne, and was shed all about Jesus. Then
J saw an angel with a commission from Jesus, swiftly flying to the
four angels who had a work to do on the earth, and waving something

James 1:25; 2:8-12.
NOTJ;;: " . . . In order to be prepared for the jUdgment, it is
necessary that mon should keep the law of God. That law will be the
standard of character in the judgment. The apostle Paul declares: 'As
many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law, . . . in
the d,ay when God shall judge the secrcts of men by Jesus Christ.'
And he says that (the doers of the law shall be justified.' . . ."

every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good,
or whether it be evil.' 'Every idle word that men shall speak, they
shall give account thereof in the day of Judgment.' Says the Sa....iour:

DUTY OF CONGREGATION ON ANTI-TYPICAL DAY OF

" ATONEMENT
Key 'l'ext: Leviticus 23: 29.

QUESTIONS:
1. Was the congregation of Israel accepted as a whole or was it
an individual work? What was the fate of an individual who
failed. to keep the day of atonement as God directed? Lev. 23 :28-30.
There were three definite things required of every individual:
(a) Do not work; verse 28.
(b) Meet a.t the sanctuary; verses 27,2ll.
(c) A1flict tJle soul; V6['ses 27,29.
2. Do these special requirements mea,n anything to the church or
God today? I Corinthians 10: 11; Hebrews 4: 16.
NOTE: These three experiences are as much more important for us
as the [lntitype is more important than the type.
3. During the a,ntitypical day of atonement, wha.t should be the
first work of every beUever? Does this excuse anyone from
necessa.ry labor or business responsibility? Matt. 6:31-33; Rom.
12:11.
NO'l'.l~: "The Saviour's ill8tructivns to His disciples were iiven for
the benefit of His followers 111 every age. He had those in view who
wpre living near the close of time, when He said: 'Take heed to
~'ourselves.' It is our work, e:lch for himself, to cherish in the heart
the prerious graces of the Holy Spirit." -51' 102.
4. What snare does Satan most e1fec~.ively use to entrap many who
profess the tTuth? Luke 21:34; Matthew 6:19,20.

:'<O'l'B: "l'vtany who are numbered with the believers are not really
with them in f.:lith and principle. 'l'hey are doing exactly that which

· . . 'rhey show no real faith and confidence in God. In order to
gain riches they accumulate burdell8 and cares until their minds are
·almost wholly engrossed with them. They are eager for gains and
always anxious for fear of losses. The more money and land~ they
possess the more eager are they for more. 'They are drunken, but
not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.' They are
surfeited with the eares of this life, which affect them as strong drink
does the drunkard. They are so blinded by selfishness that they work
night and day to secure perishable treasures. Their eternal interests
are neglected; they have not time to attend to these things. The
great matters of truth are not kept in mind, as is evidenced by their
words, their plans, and their course of action. What if souls around
them perish in their sins 1 This is not of so much consequenee to them
as their earthly treasures. Let souls for whom Christ died sink to
ruin; they have no time to save them. In laying plans for earthly
gain they show skill and talent; but these precious qualities are
not devoted to winning souls to Christ, to the upbuilding of the
Hedeemer's kingdom . . . " -5T 258,259.

Only those who, in their attitude before God, are filling
the position of those who .are repenting and confessing their sins in the
great antitypical day of atoncment, will be recognized and marked as

CLEANSING THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY

Key Text: Leviticus 16:30.

QUESTIONS:

1. What was the high priest, in the Levitical sanctua.ry, conunanded

to do at the completion of his ministry in the most holy place?
Leviticus 16:20,21.

NOTE: "It was seen, also, that while the sin offering pointed to
Christ as a sacrifice, and the high priest represented Christ as a
mecliator, the scapegoat typified Satan, the author of sin, upon whom
the sins of the truly penitent will finally be placed. When the high
priest, by virtue of the blood of the sin offering, removed the sins
from the sanctuary, he placed them upon the scapegoat. When Christ,
hy virtue of His own blood, removes the sins of His people from the
heavenly sanctuary at the close of His miJlistration, He will place
t.,em upon Sat.an, who, in the execution of the judgment, must hear
the final penalty. The scapegoat was sent away into a land not in-
habited, never to come again into the congregation of Isr.ae1. So
will Satan be forever banished from the presence of God and His
people, and he will be blott.ed from existence in the final destruction
of sin and sinners." -GC 422.

2. Wha.t was done with Azazel, the scapegoat, when the sins of
Israel had been confessed upon h1m? LeViticus 16:21,22.

himself and bore them from the sanctuary. Placing hig hands upon
the head of the scapegoat, he confessed over him all these sins, thus
in figure transferring them from himself to the goat. The goat then
bore them away, and they were regarded as forever separated from
the people." -GC 419,420.
3. When Azazel was removed from the camp of Israel, what was
the condit[on of the sanctuary and of the people of Israel? Lev.
16:33.
4. Does the work of cleansing the heavenly sanctuary represent
only a judicial act, or does it signify also an experience for the
people of God? Leviticus 16:30; Malachi 3:2-4.
NO'1'J<;: . . '1'hose who are living upon the earth when the
intercession of Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand
in the sight of a holy God without a mediator. 'L'heir robes must be
f;potless, their characters must be purified from sin by the blood of
sprinkling. Through the grace of God .and their own diligent effort
they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the investigative
judgment is going forward in heaven, while the sins of penitent be-
lievers are being removed fTom the sanctuary, there is to be a special
work of purificatioll, of' putting away of sin, among God's people upon
earth . . ." -GC 425.

mands of God upon the Day of Atonement? When our Great High
Priest finishes His work in Ule most holy place, what edict will
go forth? Leviticus 23: 28-30; Revelat!ion 22: 11.
NO'1'J<;: . . When Jesus rises up in the most holy place, and lays
off His mediatorial garments, and clothes Himself with the garments
of vengeance in place of the priestly attire, the work for sinners will
bc done. '1'he period of time will then have eome when the mandate will
go forth: 'He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: . . . and he
that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him
be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me,
to give every man according as his work shall be.' " -2T 691.
".Many entertain the view that probation is granted after Jesus
leaves His wO.rk as mediator in the most holy apartment. 'L'his is
the sophistry of Sa tan . . ." -Ibid., p. 691.

THE LATTER RAIN

Key Text: Zechariah 10:1.
QUESTIONS:

1. What special provision has the Lord prom.ised for the finishing
of His work on earth? Joel 2:23; Hosea 6:1-3.

NOTE: "But near the close of earth's harvest, a special bestowal

of spll'itual grace is promised to prepare the church for the coming
of the :Son of man. '1'his outpouring of the Spirit is likened to the
falling of the latter rain; and it is for this added power that
ChristIans are to sellC! their petitions to the Lord of the harvest 'in
the time of the latter rain.' In response, 'the Lord shall make
bright clouds, and give them showers of rain.' 'He will cause
to come down . . . the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain.'
.uechariah 10:1; Joel 2:23." -AA 55.

-30-
2. Is the time overdue for the fulfilling of this promise? As we
are living in "the time of the latter rain," 'Wha,t, should be our
earnest petition to the throne of grace? Zechariah 10:1.

NOTE: " . . . If all who had labol'ed unitedly in the work in 1844,
liad receiver] the third angel's message and proclaimed it in the
power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord would have wrought mightily
with their efforts. A flood of light would have been shed upon the
world. Years ,ago the inhabitants of the earth would have been
warned, the closing work completed, and Christ would have come
for the redemption of His people." -GC 458.
3. When was the "early" or "former" rain in the spiritual sense
first bestowed? Acts 2:1-4.
N o'rJ~: " . . . The outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the
apostles was 'the former rain,' and glorious was the result. But the
latter rain will be more abundant. "-81' 21.
4. What is meant by the "former rain" experience today? Is it
possible to receive the "latter rain" if the "former rain" has
not done its work in our lives? Acts 5:32; Luke 11:9,10,13.

NO'l'J<J: "Many have ill a great measure failed to receive the former
rain. They have not obtained all the benefits th,at God has thus
provided for them. 'rhey expect that the lack will be supplied by the
la tter rain. "When the richest abundance of grace shall be bestowed,
they intend to open their hearts to receive it. They are making a
tel'l'ible mistake. The work that God lws begun in the human heart in
giving His light and knowledge must be continually going forward.
l<Jvery individual must realize his own necessity. The heart must be
'Cmptied of every defilement, and cleansed for the indwelling of the
~pirit. It was by the coniiession and forsaking of sin, by earnest
prayer and consecration of them~elves to God, that the early disciples
prepared for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentec, ost.
'1'he same work, only in greater degree, must be done now. Then the
human agent had only to ask for the blessing, and wait for the Lord
to perfect the work concel'lling him. It is God who began the work,
and He will finish His work, making man complete in Jesus Christ.
Hut there must be no neglect of the grace represented by the former
rain. Only those who are living up to the light they have will receive
greater light. Unless we aro cl:Jily advancing in the exemplification
of the active Christian virtues, we shall not recognize the manifestations
of the Holy Spirit in the laHer rain. It may be falling on he,arts all
an,uncl us, but we shall not discern or recei"e it." -'I'M 507.

5. In the parable of the ten virgins, what fatal neglect had been
Illade by the five foolish ones? What was the result? Matt. 25 :7-11,

-n-
6. What false expectancy possesses the minds of many advent be-
lievers?

NO'j'J<;: "I saw that many were neglecting the preparation so needful'
,and were looking to the time of "refreshing" and the "la tter rain" to
flit them to stand in the day of the Lord and to live in His sight. Oh,
how many I sa II' in the time of trouble without a shelter! They had
neglected the needful preparatioll; therefore they could not receive
the refreshing that all must hnve to fit them to live in the sight of
a holy God. '1'hose who refuse to he hewed by the prophets and fail
to purify their souls in obeying the whole truth, and who are willing
to believe that their condition is far better than it really is, will come
up to the time of the falling of the plagues, and then see that they
needed to be hOlyed and squared for the buildiJlg "-EVil' 71.

7. Who only will share the promised "refreshing"? I John 5:4;

Revelation 3 :5.

NO'l'J<;: I saw that nOlle could share the" refreshing" unless

they obtain the victory oyer every besetment, over pride, selfishness,
love of the world, and over every wrong word and action. ,Ve should,
therefore, be drawing nearer and near<'r to the Lorel and be eane8tl~'
see".lIg that preparation neeessary to ('nahle us to stalld in the battle
in the day of the Lord. Let all remember that God is holy nnd that.
'Ilone but holy beings can eyer dwell in His presence." -E,V 71.

8. What, two-fold work must be carried out among the people of

God before the latter rain can be poured out? Rev. 2:5; 3: 19,20;
Hosea 10:12.

NO'J'J<;: "God calls for a spiritual revival and a spiritual reformation.

Unless this takes place, those who are lukewann will contiIllle to grow
more abho1'1'ent to the Lord, until He will refuse to acknowledge them
as His children.

"A 1'evival alld ,:1 reformation must take place under the minis-
tration of the Holy Spirit. Revival and reformation are two different
things. Hevival signifies a renewal of spritual life, a .qlliekening
of the pow'ers of mind 311rl heart, a resul'l'ection from spiritual death.
Heformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories,

HevivaJ amI reformation are to do their appointc(l work, alld in doing
this 11'01'1, they m11st blend." -COR 121.

9. What special precautions should we take in order to defeat S'atan's

attacks? What is it that he most fears? I Peter 5: 8,9, .
NO'fB: "There is nothing that Satan fears so much as that the people
of Goel shall clear the way by removing every hindrance, so that the
IJord can POUl' out His Spirit upon a languishing church and an
impenitent congregation. If Satan had his way, there would never be
another awakening, great 01' small, to the end of time. But we are
not ignoran t of his devices. It is possible to resist his power. When
the way is prepared for the Spirit of Goel, the blessing will come.
::latan c·an no mOJ'C hinder a shower of blessing from descending upon
God's people than he can close the windows of heaven that rain
cannot come upon the earth. 'Wicked men and devils cannot hinder

His people, if they will, with subdued, contrite he.arts, confess and
put away their sins, and in faith claim His promises. Bvery temptation,
