Where:
td = Design shell thickness, in mm
tt = Hydrostatic test shell thickness, in mm
D= Nominal tank diameter = 13.360 m
H= design liquid level = 7.7 m
G= Design specific gravity of the liquid to be stored = 0.86
C.A= Corrosion allowance of shell courses = 0.0 mm
Sd = Allowable stress for the design condition = 160 Mpa
St = Allowable stress for the hydrostatic test condition = 171 Mpa
MDMT = Minimum design metal temperature = 5 °C

7. EVALUATION OF BOTTOM PLATE THICKNESSES

Annular Plate thickness

As per clause 5.5.3 & Table 5-1a

Nominal plate thickness of the first shell course(t) mm = 10 mm

Nominal tank diameter in m(D) = 13.36 m
Design / Max. liquid level in m(H) = 7.7 m
Design specific gravity (G) = 0.86

Table 5-1a is applicable when effective product height of H x G < 23 m

= 6.622 < 23 Ok

t = Nominal plate thickness of the first shell course = 10 mm

td= Required design shell thickness of bottom shell course = 2.60 mm
tt= Required hydrostatic shell thickness of bottom shell course = 2.83 mm
Sd= Allowable stress for the design condition = 160 Mpa
St= Allowable stress for the hydrostatic condition = 171 Mpa
ca= corrosion allowance of shell = 0 mm

Product stress of the 1st shell course = [td- ca / (t-ca) ] * Sd

= 41.661 Mpa

y
Hydrostatic test stress in 1st shell course = [[tt / (nominal
( t)) ] * St
= 48.443 Mpa

Therefore the governing stress in the 1st shell course is:

= 48.443 Mpa < 190 Mpa
Minimum thickness of the annular plate excluding
corrosion allowance (API650 Table 5-1a) = 6 mm

Corrosion allowance of bottom annular plate = 0 mm

Min. thickness required including corrosion allowance = 6 mm

Thickness of the annular plate provided = 10 mm Safe

Check for Impact Testing requirement of annular plate
MDMT = Minimum design metal temperature = 5 °C
Miminum permissible design metal temperature = -9.146 °C Exempted from impact
Annular Plate width test requirement
As per clause 5.5.2
The minimum radial width of the annular plate at any point around the circumference of
the tank shall be either Aw1 or Aw2, Whichever is greater

Aw1 = W r + tbot + Aproj + Alap

Where
t bot = Thickness of the bottom shell course = 10 mm
A Proj = Projection outside the shell = 65 mm
A lap = Annular to Sketch lap = 40 mm
Wr= Minimum radial width between the inside of the shell and any lap-welded
joint in the bottom = 600 mm API 650 Cl 5.5.2
Aw1 = 715 mm

Where
t b= Thickness of the annular plate in mm = 10 mm
H= Design Liquid level in m = 7.7 m
G= Design specific gravity of product = 0.86
Aw2 = 835.5 mm

Therefore minimum radial width of the annular plate at any point around the tank shell is 835.5 mm

Provided annular width = 840 mm Hence Safe

Bottom sketch plate thickness

As per clause 5.4.1

Minimum thickness of the bottom sketch plate excluding corrosion allowance

= 6 mm

Corrosion allowance of bottom sketch plate = 0 mm

9. STABILITY CHECK AGAINST WIND LOAD

Design wind speed

design wind speed specified by purchaser (V), 3-sec gust = 165 km/hr

Checking the requirement of wind girder

As per clause 5.9.7.1, Maximum height of unstiffened shell shall be calculated as follows:

H1 = 9.47 t √ (t/D)³ (190/V)²

Where
H1 = Vertical distance, in m between the intermediate wind girder and the top angle of the shell
t = corroded thickness of the thinnest shell course in mm = 10 mm
D = nominal tank diameter in m = 13.360 m
V = design wind speed (3-sec gust) = 165 km/hr

Maximum height of unstiffened shell H1 = 81.317 m

Calculation of height of the transformed shell

As per clause 5.9.7.2.a, after the maximum height of the unstiffened shell, H1, has been determined,
the height of the transformed shell shall be calculated as follows:

W tr = W * √ (tuniform/tactual)5
where
W tr = transposed width of each shell course, in mm
W = actual width of each shell course, in mm
tuniform = nominal thickness of the thinnest shell course in mm = 10 mm
tactual = nominal thickness of the shell course for which the transposed width
is being calculated, in mm

tactual tuniform

3 10 10 2000 2000.00
4 10 10 2000 2000.00

Height of the transformed shell H = 8000 mm

= 8.000 m
Notes:
As per clause 5.9.7.3, if the height of the transformed shell is greater than the maximum height H1,
an intermediate wind girder is required.

Since H < H1, Intermediate wind girder is not required

Check for overturning moment against wind load

D = nominal diameter of the tank, in m = 13.360 m

Hs = total height of the tank shell, in m = 8 m
V = design wind velocity, in km/hr = 165 km/hr

As per clause 5.11.1 & clause 5.2.1 (k)

Design wind pressure on vertical projected area of
cylindrical surfaces (Pw1) = 0.86 (V/190)² kPa
Uplift pressure on horizontal projected areas of conical
surfaces (Pw2) = 1.44 (V/190)² kPa

Therefore:
Wind pressure on the projected area of the cylindrical
surface based on design wind velocity (Pw1) = 0.6486 kPa
Wind pressure on the projected area of the conical
surface based on design wind velocity (Pw2) = 1.0860 kPa

Wind force on cylindrical surface F1 = Pw1 * D * Hs = 69319.5258 N

Wind uplift on conical surface F2 = Pw2 * π/4*D² = 152239 N

Overturning moment at the base of the tank = [F1* (Hs/2)] + [F2 * (D/2)]

As per clause 5.11.2

For unanchored tank shall satisfy three of the following uplift criteria:

1) 0.6Mw + Mpi < MDL / 1.5 + MDLR

2) Mw + Fp (Mpi) < (MDL + MF) / 2 + MDLR
3) Mws + Fp (Mpi) < MDL / 1.5 + MDLR
where
Fp = pressure combination factor as per clause 5.2.2 which is equal 0.4
Mpi = moment about the shell to bottom joint from design internal
pressure
Mw = overturning moment about the shell to bottom joint from
horizontal plus vertical wind pressure
MDL = moment about the shell to bottom joint from nominal weight of
the shell
MDLR = moment about the shell to bottom joint from the nominal weight of
roof plate plus any attached structurals
MF = moment about the shell to bottom joint from liquid weight
MWS = is the overturning moment about the shell to bottom joint from horizontal wind pressure

Therefore
Mpi = Pi *1000* π/4*D²* D/2 = 0 N-m
where
Pi = design internal pressure = 0 kPa (since atmospheric pressure)

Mw = [F1* (H/2)] + [F2 * (D/2)] = 1,294,234.75 N-m

H = design liquid level = 7.70 m

Satisfying three equations below

1) 0.6Mw + Mpi < MDL / 1.5 + MDLR = 776,541 < 1,533,245 N-m → Pass
2) Mw + Fp (Mpi) < (MDL + MF) / 2 + MDLR = 1,294,235 < 3,275,865 N-m → Pass
3) Mws + Fp (Mpi) < MDL / 1.5 + MDLR = 277,278 < 1,533,245 N-m → Pass

Ratio
1) = 0.506
2) = 0.395
3) = 0.181

Since equation 1,2 & 3 are all satisfied, tank is stable against wind load
hence anchor bolt is not required.

Check for Resistance to Sliding

As per clause 5.11.4, unless otherwise required, tanks that may be subject to sliding due to wind
shall use a maximum allowable sliding friction of 0.40 multiplied by the force agaisnt the tank bottom

F_wind = 69319.53 N

F_friction = 40% of (wt. of shell + wt. of bottom + wt. of roof + misc.)

= 0.4 x 524,717.00 N
= 209886.80 N
F_friction > F_wind

Since friction against sliding is greater than wind force hence anchor bolt is
not required
