Course Description:
This course introduces the fundamentals of medical instrumentation systems, and bio-signal
processing Basic concepts of Biomedical Instrumentation, his module will provide electrical
engineering students with central core knowledge to use semiconductor devices as bio-
sensing devices, and to understand the electrical biophysics of human physiology and their
biomedical applications
Prerequisites: EELE 2320 (ELECTRONICS I )
Special Requirements: Experience in using PSPICE.

Objectives
The primary objective of this course is to provide the instructional materials that a student needs
to understand widely used medical equipment. The emphasis is on those types of equipment used
for patient care in the hospital. Also, another goal is to develop the student’s ability to think
analytically about problems that arise with complex medical equipment.

Contents
Basic transducers and principles: displacement measurement, resistive transducers, bridge
circuits, inductive transducers, capacitive transducers, temperature measurement, Origin of bio-
potential: Electrical activity of excitable cells, Volume conductor fields, functional organization
of the peripheral, the electrocardiogram (bio-potentials in Heart), the electroencephalogram. bio-
potential and other amplifiers used in medical inst: Operational amplifier analysis,
instrumentation amplifiers, voltage and current courses, operational amplifiers in Tandem, high
input impedance amplifiers with controlled gain, Buffer amplifier, bio-potential measurement
interference, common-mode rejection in a diff-amp., Patient-care equipment : The
electrocardiograph and unit-level troubleshooting, the electroencephalograph and filtering, the
defibrillator and step response, the pacemakers, catheters and blood pressure monitoring.
Specialized Medical Equipment: Clinical Laboratory equipment, Medical X-ray equipment and
X-Ray CT scanners, Imaging algorithms, ultrasonic equipment, magnetic resonance
imaging(MRI),
