1 Safety Instructions
Each system operation can influence the operating status of the attached engine.
The engine is a power-generating plant with direct influence on the vessel’s propulsion and its
power supply.
Please be aware of the consequences every time you intervene in the operation.
Make sure, especially before the engine is started, that the engine start is approved and that
there are not being done any works at the engine.

2 Scope
This operating manual describes the operation of MAN Diesel engines via a SaCoS operating
and control system.
In addition to this manual, please refer to the according chapters in the engine manual.

3 System Description
Each engine is connected with the control system SaCoS, which consists of engine-attached
components, a local engine operating station, SaCoS control units as well as operating and
display equipment for operations from a control room.
The location of these components depends on the vessel’s design.

3.1 System Outline

3.2 Engine
Each sensor and actuator is connected to the SaCoS control cabinets via the engine terminal
box and pluggable cable looms.

The local control panel installed at the engine is designed as an emergency control panel and,
therefore, only includes the operating and display elements needed for emergency operations.

3.2.1 Local Control Station

UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

The control station serves for local supervision of the most important operating values and for
engine operations during maintenance and repair works, or in case of an emergency with a
disturbance of the SaCoS system.

1) Start Button
The start button that acts pneumatically directly on the start valve and works independently of
the control section changeover-switch position.

For this starting function, no start blockings of the safety and control system are active.
UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

The operator is fully responsible for the lubrication and cooling necessary for the
engine, as well as for the condition of the driven system!
The engine start only is prevented by a pneumatic valve if the turning gear is engaged.

2) Selector Switch “ Local / Remote Control”

In position “Local“, an engine operation (start / stop) is only possible at the local engine control
station. Solely an emergency stop is possible from other operating stands, too. The speed set
point adjustment is carried out via the switch button attached to the engine control station or
the SaCoS cabinet.

SaCoS 99 MEE

In position “Remote Control”, the engine can be started from the SaCoS operating panel or,
optionally, from external systems. In this mode of operation, the speed set point adjustment is
carried out from the external system, which is normally the propulsion control system.

3) Selector Switch “ Electr. Governor / Mech. Governor”

In position “Electronic Governor“, the speed setting is done via the controller installed in the
SaCoS control cabinet, and via the electronic control unit in the mechanical speed control.
Depending on the selected control-section, the speed set point is preset via digital raise / lower
signals, or via an analogue set point signal.

4) Lamp “Turning Gear Engaged”

The illuminated lamp indicates that the turning gear is engaged and that an engine start is not
possible.

5) Lamp “Don’t Start”

The illuminated lamp “Don’t Start” indicates that the conditions for the engine start are not
fulfilled. SaCoS will not permit a regular engine start.

6) Lamp “Mech. Speed Set Point Max.”

The illuminated lamp indicates that the speed governor is set at maximum speed set point.

7) Lamp “Mech. Speed Set Point Min.”

The illuminated lamp indicates that the speed governor is set at minimum speed set point.

8) Emergency Stop Button (Mechanical)

The emergency stop valve is provided with a mechanical emergency stop button which directly
acts on the emergency stop valve. Thus, an engine emergency stop is possible even in case of
a safety system breakdown

9) Emergency Start Button

At the emergency start valve, another button is installed for mechanical actuating of the start
valve. It works independently of the SaCoS system and can be used to start the engine in case
of an engine control breakdown (Emergency Start).

For this start function, no start blockings of the operating and control system are active.
UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

The operator is fully responsible for the engine lubrication and cooling, as well as for
the condition of the driven system!
The engine start only is prevented by a pneumatic valve if the turning gear is engaged.

10) Emergency Stop Button (Electrical)

The electrical emergency stop button acts on the emergency stop valve via the SaCoS system.
Before another engine start, the electrical emergency stop button must be released.
As long as the red lamp of the button is illuminated, an emergency stop is active and an engine
start is not possible. This lamp is also illuminated in case the emergency was, for instance,
triggered in the engine control room. The Reset then is to be carried out from there.

3.3 SaCoS
The operation and control of the engine is done by the Safety and Control System.
This system is divided into the subsystems “Safety System”, “Engine Control/Speed Control”
and “Alarm Pre-Processing”. All subsystems work independently, but share information via a
common system bus.

SaCoS usually consists of

• two floor-mounted cabinets that can be installed either in the engine room or in the engine
control room
• an operating panel, usually installed in the engine control room console
• an optional indicating panel installed in the wheelhouse and
• a wall-mounted auxiliary cabinet to be installed in the engine room

3.3.1 SaCoS Control Cabinets

The SaCoS control cabinets are equipped only with signal lamps for the power supply and a
“Reset” pushbutton. The “Reset” pushbutton only serves to reset the hardware emergency stop
function in case of a SaCoS breakdown.
For regular operation, no handling of the operating and control cabinets is necessary.

In case the system is being shut down for a longer period, it may be necessary to
switch on the integrated cabinet heaters in order to prevent condensation of water
inside the cabinets. Please be aware that in this case the corresponding operating
power has to be supplied!

3.3.2 SaCoS Operating Panels

Engine operations are handled by an operating and display panel, which normally is installed in
the engine control room and is equipped with an interactive display and hardware switches for
system and emergency operations.
The engine control room console can be equipped optionally with analogue speed indicators
and media temperature control units.

Illuminated Pushbutton Switch OVERRIDE

With the aid of the “Override” switch, the safety system function can be restricted to the issuing
of alarms and messages. With the “Override” function being active, most auto shutdowns, load
reductions and clutch disengagements, although requested, are not carried out by the safety
system. Exceptions are manual emergency stop and overspeed monitoring, which always have
top priority.
The procedure of a sequence is characterised as follows:
• “Override“ is actuated by the operator as a precaution prior to a difficult manoeuvre
(entering port, difficult passage, etc.), in order to suppress an automatic function by the
safety system.
• An alarm for automatic stop, load reduction or disengaging, triggered while the “Override“
function is active, is displayed optically by the safety system via the relevant pilot lamp
flashing and audibly by a continuous signal (buzzer) sounding. However, no reaction of the
safety system occurs.
• Activating “Override” will not directly reset safety system functions that have already been
triggered.
• The fact that “Override“ is active is made visible to the operator by the illuminated
pushbutton.
To reset override, the button has to be pushed again.

3.4 System Integration

SaCoS is connected with the ship’s installations by several different interfaces.

3.4.1 System Outline

3.4.2 Alarm System

A MODBUS interface serves as connection to the machinery alarm system. The ship’s
machinery system (master system) periodically requests for data which are then sent to the
alarm system by SaCoS (slave system).
The available data are listed in the chapter “Interfaces” of the engine automation manual.

3.4.3 Propeller
The interface includes safety and remote control functions.
The safety functions control all interconnections between main engine and propulsion control
system (PCS), according to classification and MAN Diesel requirements.
The remote control functions are available as long as “remote control” is selected at the local
engine control panel. In remote control, a main engine start and stop, as well as a pre-selection
of the engine speed set point, is available from the PCS.
For details, please refer to chapter “Interfaces” of the engine automation manual.

3.4.4 Pump Control

The interface to the pump control system is designed as a hardwired interface. SaCoS
requests lubrication and cooling by means of pumps if a pump operation is necessary.
The starters for the pumps and the local / remote operation handling are carried out by the
pump control system.
For details, please refer to the chapter “Interfaces” of the engine automation manual and to the
documents concerning the pump control system.

4 Operation / Control

4.1 Operating Hierarchy / Control Station

4.1.1 Regular Operation (Remote)

Regular operation is controlled at the SaCoS operating panel, which normally is installed in the
engine control room.
Engine start, error acknowledgements and the indication of all messages about status,
operation and errors are carried out here.
In this operating mode, the speed set point target is set by the propeller control.

4.1.2 External Control

Engine start / stop and target speed set point are regulated by the propeller control. The
detailed indication of messages concerning status, operations and errors is available at the
SaCoS operating panel.

4.1.3 Emergency Operation (Local)

An emergency operation can only be carried out locally at the control station on engine.
Engine start and speed setting are possible even if SaCoS is not available.

4.2 Engine Startup

In case the engine has been put out of operation due to, e.g., longer works of
maintenance and repair, it has to be preheated and pre-lubricated sufficiently before
being started.

If necessary, conservations made have to be removed. Please refer to the correspondent

chapters in the engine manuals and the necessary auxiliary systems for more information on
UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

this.
If the power supplies of SaCoS are being interrupted, they have to be switched on early
enough before the engine is started, to assure that possibly existing rechargeable batteries can
be reloaded and are available with full capacity.
For further information regarding batteries please refer to the separate manual of the auxiliary
cabinet.

4.4 Engine Start

Before starting the engine, several settings are to be carried out depending on the implemented
speed control system.
If the engine is to be started with the mechanical speed governor, the speed set point must be
adjusted to “minimum speed set point” before starting. In case this set point is not adjusted,
overspeed can occur after engine start.
If the engine is to be started with the electronic speed governor, the speed set point must be
adjusted to “maximum speed set point” before starting the engine. If this set point is not
adjusted, the full nominal speed will not be reached during engine operation.
The control lamps at the local operating stand indicate whether these set points have been
reached or not.

4.4.1 Local Start

The local start will be triggered by pressing the “START” button (1) at the engine-mounted
control station until the engine starts running.

4.4.2 Remote Start

The regular engine start is carried out from the engine control room with electrical speed
control. In order to use the full speed range of the engine, the speed set point of the
mechanical governor is to be set on “maximum speed”. This can be done directly at the speed
governor or at one of the SaCoS cabinets. The engine can be started by pressing the start key
on the engine operating panel in the engine control room if the starting conditions have been
met, i.e. no start interlock should be active.
During the start procedure, the operator can follow the individual steps on the display of the
engine operating panel. In case of an error occurring during engine start, all the signals and
devices activated previously will be deactivated or switched off. The engine starting procedure
can be re-attempted if the error has been deleted and if the operator has acknowledged.
At the operating and display unit, the blue key <F2> has to be used to start and stop the
engine. By pressing <F2>, the display shows the current condition of the engine. Depending on
the condition (ENGINE STOPPED, ENGINE RUNNING, START BLOCKED), reference will be
made to different menus.
When the engine is available, the message “ENGINE STOPPED“, “PRESS <F1> TO START
ENGINE“ is displayed. By selecting <F1>, the screen displays “PRESS <F13> TO CONFIRM“.
UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

The key <F13> has to be pressed within 10 seconds in order to start the engine.

4.4.3 Emergency Start

The emergency start and the emergency stop from the engine operating panel are
independent from the local / remote switch. Local start / stop as emergency actuation must be
always possible.

Once the START button is pressed, an emergency start will be performed without prior
monitoring of oil pressures or engine priming. The starting procedure is performed manually
UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

without any action of the engine control system. The starting valve is activated as long as the
operator is keeping the START button pressed. The valve is to be actuated until the engine is
turning independently and the engine speed is higher than the start speed (approx. 85 rpm).
In case an emergency stop valve is activated, it is to be cancelled.
During an emergency start, no automatic start backup control is available.

Engine operators take the full responsibility for triggering an emergency start! The
cooling water and lubricating oil pumps must be switched on manually by the operator
prior to triggering an emergency start.

4.8.34.7.3Charge Air Temperature Regulation (CHATCO)

The charge air temperature set point is calculated automatically by the temperature controlling
unit, depending on the ambient air temperature (1TE6000).
UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

The operator has access to the set point memory spaces W1 to W4, but must not modify the
included and pre-set values. In case of such a modification, the entire charge air temperature
control function would be endangered.

For further information, please refer to the JUMO operating manual B 70.3580.

4.8.44.7.4 LT Cooling Water Temperature Regulation Aufzählungszeichen
General Information

The following instructions explain the usage of the LT cooling water temperature control at the
control unit JUMO Dicon 501.
The corresponding software is already pre-installed by the manufacturer and should not be
modified by the user. For each software change, a special software tool is necessary.
However, the set point at the temperature control unit that is preset to 32°C can be adjusted
between 20°C and 40°C, according to the following steps listed in the table below.

The table also shows the display messages that appear on the JUMO control unit responding
to the activation of any pushbutton. The pushbuttons are to be actuated successively.

Pushbutton Display Notes

Standard Display (Actual Value /
Desired Value / Location).
1. <PGM> “W“ and the current set point are
displayed in turn.
2. <∇> or <∆> “W“ and the current set point are The set point can be modified

3. <ENTER> “W“ and the current set point are Instead of pressing <ENTER>, a few
displayed in turn. seconds waiting time is possible.
4. <EXIT/Hand> Standard Display (Actual Value /
Desired Value / Location).
UserManual_SaCoS99_KT94_98.doc

The LT set point is then adjusted.

In case of a more complex adjusting process (e.g. with HT), a direct access to, and change of
the set point memory spaces W1-W4 instead of the set point itself is possible. The current set
point then complies with the memory space W1; W2-W4 are ignored by the program.

4.8 Engine Stop

Engine stop can be actuated by several panels depending to the selected control station in
progress.
In each case by actuating an engine stop the engine will be stopped immediately without any
de-loading ramp controlled by SaCoS.
So before actuating an engine stop be aware that the engine is unloaded. The engine stop
sequence controls post lubrication and post cooling.

4.9 Engine Shutdown

Please refer to the correspondent engine manuals, the auxiliary systems and the power supply
unit about an engine shutdown.
Also see the instructions in chapter 5 “Storage”.
