A camel can live for many days in the desert without water. Camel riding is

the most popular method of travel in the desert. That is why the camel is called

the ‘ship of the desert’.

Camels have hump on their backs. The Arabian camel which is commonly

found in the Sahara Desert has only one hump. However, the camels in Western

Asia have two humps. Camels store fats in their humps. This fat changed into

food and energy for the camels when they have no food or water while travelling

in the desert. This is how camels can live for very long periods without food and

water. When they do drink, they can take as much as 50 gallons of water at one

time to make up for all the water they lost during their travels in the desert.

This amount is equal to about 500 glasses of water.

Baby camels take about five years to grow to the size of their parents.

Camels have special fur to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. No

other animals so specially suited to living in the desert as a camel.
