Frankie’s Knitted Stuff

Colour Wheel Shawl

This is a circular shawl with
each of the twelve panels
knitted in a shade from the
colour wheel.

It is about 48 cm / 19" deep

and is knitted in a simple stitch
pattern with strips of eyelets
separated by garter stitch.

The Yarn

I chose 21st Century Yarn’s 4 ply Shetland (465 m / 100g) for

my shawl, which comes in a range of beautiful hand-dyed
colours. You will need 50 g in each of the twelve colours.

Red Strawberry
Orange-Red Flame
Orange Clementine
Yellow-Orange Saffron
Yellow Cowslip
Green-Yellow Citron
Green Grass
Blue-Green Peacock
Blue Bluebell
Violet-Blue Larkspur
Violet Sapphire
Red-Violet Aubrietia

I used 3 mm / US size 2½ needles and worked to a tension of

about 11 stitches and 22 rows to 5 cm / 2"² in garter stitch.
Knitting a Panel

Using the cable method cast on 15 stitches.

Knit five rows. After the first row, slip the first stitch of every
row knitwise throughout the pattern.

The knitting consists of two very similar pattern repeats, each

with eight rows.

Pattern A

Row 1: K4, *yf, K2tog, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K3.

Row 2: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Knit.

Row 5: K3, m1, K to last 3 sts, m1, K3.

Row 6: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 7: Knit.
Row 8: Knit.

The next pattern is the same, apart from the eyelet row at the
beginning. Changing the way the eyelet rows are worked like
this keeps the knitting straight.

Pattern B

Row 1: K2, *SSK, yf, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K3.

Row 2: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Knit.

Row 5: K3, m1, K to last 3 sts, m1, K3.

Row 6: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 7: Knit.
Row 8: Knit.
Carry on, alternating Patterns A and B until you have 75 stitches
on your needle. You will have worked 30 strips of eyelets.
Knit five more rows and cast off.

Now you just have to knit eleven more panels. If you don’t want
a circular shawl you could stop after eight or nine panels.

Joining the Panels

You might like to sew the panels together as you finish each
one. I didn’t do this and so had eleven seams to sew at the end.
Actually, it didn’t take too long.

With the two panels next to

each other, join them by
working through the bumps at
the end of the knitted ridges.
Work as close to the edge as
you can and don’t pull the
stitches too tight.

This is a lovely, full shawl which

can be wrapped around several
times for a warm and layered look.
