6. STORAGE / HANDLING
6.1 Bondstrand fiberglass (FRP) pipes are sensitive pipes. Therefore, handling
shall be done in a manner to avoid striking or hitting pipe with hard objects
such as metal or hard wood.
6.2 During rigging or offloading, nylon slings attached or wrapped around pipe shall
be used.
6.3 Pipe shall not be laid barely on ground as it may strike or get in contact with
loose sharp edge objects which can result in pipe damaging.
6.4 Stockpile shall be layered with proper wedge supports and wrapped material to
prevent pipe from rolling. Avoid stockpile height of more than 3 meters.
6.5 Pipe shall not be droped to avoid damage.
6.6 Avoid over tightening tie-down of pipes.
6.7 Protective covers on pipe ends shall be installed to protect pipe from ingress of
dirts or damaged on end surface.
6.8 Visibility of pipe discolouration indicates pipe instability. This is due to a
possible impact on pipe. QC shall advise rectification requirement where
visual evidence is noticed.
7. TRENCH EXCAVATION
7.1 Pipes shall be laid on sandbags prior to lamination and final backfilling inside
trench in order to avoid pipe from floating due to rain water.
7.2 Required pipe trench shall be narrow, as possible, to protect pipe from
movement laterally prior to backfilling.
7.3 After excavation of trench, a minimum of 150 mm sand bed compacted at
90% relative dry density.
7.4 At bottom of pipe elevation, a minimum of 150 mm soft sand bedding shall be
laid to allow pipe proper resting.
7.5 The trench must have vertical sidewalls from the foundation to at least the top of
pipe. Maintain a minimum trench width equal to the inside diameter of the
pipe plus 300mm on both sides.
7.6 If pipe required is to be routed across any road, the height of earth cover over
the top of pipe, shall not be less than 1 meter, depending on location of pipe
crossing.
7.7 Provide firm, but not hard foundation consisting of sound earth or granular soil,
free from stones or lumps exceeding one inch (1”), that might bear against
the pipe.

7.8 When the location of excavation is soft or wet, unstable soil will not provide
proper support to pipe. Conditions like this should require over excavation of
at least 150 mm and backfill at around 50 mm below subgrade with solid
granular soil compacted to at least 40-70% relative dry density.

8. INSTALLATION OF ABOVEGROUND/UNDERGROUND PIPING

8.1 Bell Spigot Connection :

8.1.1 Manufacturer’s recommended epoxy adhesive shall be used for bell and
spigot joints.
8.1.2 Prior to the application of epoxy adhesive, spigot connection shall be tapered
and shall be shaved to the proper outside diameter (as per manufacture
specification) in order to fit the bell connection.
8.1.3 Bell & Spigot surface shall be clean, free of any moist or oily surface.
Surface shall be rough enough prior to the application of epoxy adhesive.
8.1.4 Tapering of pipe ends shall follow correct and recommended procedure by
manufacturer.
8.1.5 Trained/experience workers with sufficient background of bondstrand piping
shall use the tapering tools or other related job.
5
Bonder qualifications to be as per RGX-T-CS/TR 4947 and MS-742-166 item
7.0. Bonding records to be as per item 7.6.
8.1.6 Manufacturer’s recommended epoxy adhesive kit, shall be applied uniformily
in side bell and on surface of spigot using a spatula. Allow around five
minutes of time for adhesive drying at ambient temperature, then spigot shall
be inserted into bell. For service line temperature of about 150ºF, a minimum
curing time of around 30 minutes shall be allowed. For fittings, and mounting
flange connection a minimum of 45 minutes shall be allowed for curing. For
fast curing, heating blanket shall be used as per manufacturer’s
recommended procedure.
8.1.7 Allowable amount or sets of adhesive kit shall be strictly adhered to as
recommended by manufacturer.
8.1.8 Pipe assembly shall be protected against unnecessary movement after
application of adhesive in order to avoid pipe distortion.
8.1.9 A camalong shall be used to engage tightly the bell & spigot connection.
8.1.10 Check inside pipe for any material left out after work.
8.2 Repair work procedure for pipe to pipe connection (to be used only when
required) :

8.2.1 Around 150mm pipe end shall be shaved ready for lamination for pipe to pipe
jointing. Proper tools and materials shall be used for joint lamination.
8.2.2 Pipe end shall be beveled prior to lamination work.

8.2.3 Apply two layers of wet boat tape (2” to 4” width) circumferentially on pipe
joint. Apply adhesive to pipe end and heating blankets shall be used for one
hour for curing.
8.2.4 As soon as adhesive is cured, surface shall be sanded to a rough surface.
8.2.5 Prepare “resin mix” with the correct ratio. The amount of mixture shall
depend on pipe diameter. Curing agent shall be carefully mixed with resin.
Resin and curing agent temperature shall not exceed 27ºC.
8.2.6 Required number of boat tape layers with around 50% overlap shall be
applied individually in circumferential direction to the pipe ends.
8.2.7 50 mm /100 mm width of woven roving mat shall be wrapped around the pipe
with boat tape soaked with resin; (As per manufacturers recommendation
shown in table (1) attached).
8.2.8 50-80 mm width nexus/polyveil shall be used as a final layer and shall be
wound spirally on the whole surface. Finally, resin on exterior of the
lamination shall be smoothen with a rubber scrapper.
8.2.9 When curing is sufficiently attained, sand rough edges and generally smooth
external surface with manufacturer’s recommended compound, RP 66 for
appearance and protection.
8.2.10 Spools and straight pipes shall be properly fixed by using camalog.
8.2.11 Valves shall be independently supported from the pipe, to avoid load of valve
being transferred directly to pipe.
8.2.12 Isolation valves shall be contained inside valve pit for underground piping.
8.2.13 Vents and drains shall be properly installed at high points and low points
respectively.

9 SAFETY

9.1 Only qualified personnel shall be involved in the operation, preparation and
installation of bond strand firbre glass pipe.
9.2 Workers should comply absolutely, with use of proper PPE when working with
firbre glass piping.
9.3 When working inside pipe or any confined space proper working permit shall
be acquired, and safety personnel to be informed with the subject.
9.4 Proper ventilation during application of lamination shall be encourage in
order to prevent any suffocation of workers.
9.5 Scaffolding shall be installed by only competent and authorized persons and
properly tagged and accepted.
9.6 Proper PPE must be worn.
9.7 MSDS shall be made available at site.
