1. Laboratory specific gravity and absorption tests are run on two coarse aggregate (4 pts)
Sizes, which have to be blended. The results are as follows:
Aggregate A: Bulk specific gravity = 2.491; Absorption = 0.8%
Aggregate B: Bulk specific gravity = 2.773; Absorption = 4.6%
a. What is the specific gravity of a mixture of 50% aggregate A and 50%
Aggregate B by weight?
b. What is the absorption of the mixture?
2. A sieve analysis test was performed on a sample of aggregate and produced the following
results: (4 pts)
Calculate the percent passing through each sieve, Fineness Modulus. Plot the percent passing
versus sieve size on a. Semilog gradation chart, and b.0.45 gradation chart (Figure A.22).
3. Base coarse aggregate has a target dry density of 119.7 lb/cu ft in place. It will
be laid down and compacted in a rectangular street repair area of 2000ft x 48ft x 6in.
The aggregate in the stockpile contains 3.1 percent moisture. If the required compaction is 95
percent of the target, how many
tons of aggregate will be needed? (3 pts)
5. Explain significance and use of each of the following tests: Specific Gravity and
Absorption of coarse aggregates, Sieve analysis of fine aggregates, dry rodded unit
weight of coarse aggregates. (2 pts)
