The following guide summarizes turf sod production equipment, parts and supplies exhibited or
demonstrated at the 1999 TPI Summer Convention and Field Day held at the
Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. Participating companies were invited to
submit photographs and copy describing their equipment.
Descriptions and specifications given in these brief summaries will be documented and
amplified by the specific company. Contact information is at the end of this equipment guide.

TWO SOD HARVESTERS IN ONE

The SH 1560 sod harvester from Brouwer incor-

porates all the proven, time-tested features of the
standard Brouwer harvester plus many new fea-
tures most demanded by today's sod producers. A
floating cutting head with 10 degrees of pivot
reduces scalping and produces uniform thickness
of sod. Standard hydraulic depth control enables
you to adjust sod thickness on the go and the new

one machine. 1) Large Rolls. A single operator can
harvest large rolls of sod 24 inches wide and up to
125 feet long with or without the need of core
tubes at the rate of 1,500 square yards per hour.
The rolls are ejected out of the way of the next
pass so a forklift operator is not needed during the
harvesting operation. Also, with the Brouwer
SH1560 floating cutting head and auto steer sys-
tem your harvested yield per acre is greatly
enhanced increasing profits for the turf producer.
2) Small Slabs. Within 5 minutes the Rollmax sod
harvester can be converted to harvest slab sod in
pieces 24 inches wide by the length of cut you
require. Using the Brouwer net wrap attachment
these slabs are rolled up into a large roll contain-
ing 25 square yards of sod. No tube is necessary
to handle the rolls as the forks on a standard fork-
lift can be set to pick the rolls up from underneath
for loading. At the installation site the rolls are eas-
ily pushed onto their sides to unwrap the netting
from the roll and start laying the pieces by hand.
This is an ideal method of handling sod for small-
er landscape areas, garden centers and home-
owners.
BROUWER: SH1555 AND
SH1560 HARVESTERS WITH
JOHN DEERE 5210
In addition to the New Holland tractor Brouwer
now offers their SH 1555 and SH 1560 sod har-
vesters mounted on a John Deere 5210 tractor.
The 5210 features a 3 cylinder diesel engine,
hydrostatic power steering, hydraulic wet disc
brakes, and a 12-speed transmission, 9 forward
and 3 reverse. Four-wheel drive is also available
for conditions where extra traction and steerability
is needed. John Deere recently introduced the
new Power Tech engine for the 5210 that delivers
45 pto Hp, more torque, and excellent fuel effi-
ciency. Also, lower sound levels will please your
ears. The proven reliability of a Brouwer sod har-
vester mounted on the John Deere 5210 tractor is

TRADITIONAL ROllS
The Magnum 42" slabbing attachment attaches to
any Magnum Big Roll harvester. The unit converts
from Big Roll to slab in 10 to 15 minutes. Slabs are
harvested two at a time. This means harvesting
faster with less labor required to stack. The unit is

MAGNUM (BECI): 48" ROll OR
SLAB HARVESTER
Kesmac, Inc., manufactures an attachment specif-
ically for use with the Magnum 42" Bucyrus Big
Roll sod harvester called a 'Tipper." The Tipper
tips one or two big rolls to the right or left or the
harvester, out of the way, so harvesting can con-
tinue undisturbed. All hardware and hydraulics are
provided to make the hookup quick and easy.
Utilizing the Tipper can save time, effort and
money. The Tipper can be purchased from either
Bucyrus or Kesmac. Marketing and sales of the unit
is a cooperative effort by both companies.
The newest addition to the Magnum systems is
the Magnum 48. As a pallet or slab harvester, it
will cut 24" wide pieces two at a time or 24" wide WMI/TSH: TEXAS SOD

The Brouwer BV138 vacuum is a light, compact
and very maneuverable unit with a small tractor
requirement. This labor saving machine features
heavy-duty impeller fans that power two
adjustable nozzle extensions, creating exceptional

per has corrosion resistant galvanized sides and is
quickly unloaded with a high angle hydraulic hop-

BARR-NET: THE C-175 SOLO
SOONET INSTAllER
Barr-Net, Inc. has redesigned their C-175 Solo
Sod net Installer. These changes represent
improvements based on input from our customers
and our own experience. Early feedback has been
very positive and we feel that these improvements
make it the best Sodnet Installer on the market. 1)
The disc applicator has been redesigned by
adding 2 press wheels mounted directly behind
the disc. This arrangement pushes soil over the
netting grove made by the disc insuring grove cov-
erage. 2) The disc applicator has been redesigned
to allow it to swivel. This means that the grove
remains true and the netting secure even when
straight line application is not possible. 3) The disc
applicators and press wheel assemblies are now
horizontally adjustable as well as vertically
adjustable. With this adjustment, you can fully uti-
lize the entire width of the netting roll eliminating
waste. These new modifications has doubled the
efficiency of the machine. Faster tractor ground
speed is possible with even better net security.
Conwed Plastics produces two nettings for turfsod
production. Sod net is for improved turf production.
It reinforces turf from critical early growth through
harvest and beyond. Some basic features of
Sod net: wide roll widths to reduce application
time; results in thinner, lighter slabs, earlier har-
vests and lower costs; and the company has
regional warehousing.
Sodwrap is for reinforcement of big rolls. It is used
with a variety of equipment for harvesting and
installing big rolls. It helps hold rolls together
during transport and installation. It is available in
two standard sizes and two different strengths.
CONWEO PLASTIC: STAKE-IT-
EASY MACHINE
The Stake-it-Easy machine from Conwed Plastics
is proving to be one of the fastest, easiest ways to
anchor turf reinforcement netting. Pictured here
being used behind a roll of Sodnet<ID, its bio-
degradable, 4%" wooden stakes are readily
applied or "stapled" deep enough in the soil to hold
netting in place.
Stake-It-Easy reduces labor and saves time, and
is much more efficient than "manual" staking. 125
stakes are loaded in the chamber to minimize

the TPI Field Day. The netting is supplied by
Tamanet USA, Inc.; it has a strength and flexibility
that makes for easy use with the EZ-Net 2000.
Advantages of the EZ-Net 2000 unit include: 1) A
one man operation; 2) Faster application with less
labor costs; 3) 48" Width between the coulters-8.7
acres per roll, less roll change; 4) Tacks netting
every four feet, thus eliminating wind damage, no
sticks needed; 5) Can be used on uneven ground;
6) Weeds grow through netting instead of pushing
it up; and, 7) Hydraulically adjustable.

width, the netting stretches 110' to 170' (depend-

Tipper Tie-Net turf netting has the following fea-

playing damage and aerating the top layer. For
these activities it is often useful to apply dressing
soil to make the field properly level and playable
again. With this newly developed machine supply-
ing and spreading dressing soil is no longer nec-
essary because it recycles soil by moving it from
within the top layer of the field onto the field. Pits
and hollows can also be filled, as the machine can
collect and transport soil. This recycling process
