Urea is produced by synthesis from liquid ammonia and gaseous carbon dioxide.
In the Urea Reactor, R-1001, the ammonia and carbon dioxide react to form ammonium carbamate,
a portion of which dehydrates to urea and water.
The reactions are as follows:
The fraction of ammonium carbamate that dehydrates is determined by the ratios of the various
reagents, the operating temperature and the residence time in the reactor.
The mole ratio of ammonia to carbon dioxide is around 3.3 +3.6
The mole ratio of water to carbon dioxide is around 0.5+ 0.7.
The liquid ammonia feed to Urea Unit, coming from the relevant Ammonia Unit, is filtered through
NH3 Filters, FL-1002 NB, then enters into NH3 Recovery Tower, T-1005, and is collected in the
Ammonia Receiver Tank, V-1005. From V-1005 it is drawn and pumped to about 22 bar g pressure
by means of Ammonia Booster centrifugal Pump, P-1005 NB. Part of this ammonia is sent to
Medium Pressure Absorber, T-1001, the remaining part enters the high pressure synthesis loop.
The ammonia to the synthesis loop is pumped by H.P. Ammonia centrifugal Pump, P-1001 NB, to a
pressure of about 220 bar g. Before entering the reactor, the ammonia is heated in the Ammonia
Pre heater, E-1007, and used as propelling fluid in the Carbamate Ejector, J-1 001, where the

carbamate coming from the. Carbamate Separator, V-1001, isprope:\Ied up to the synthesis
pressure.
The liquid mixture of NH 3 . and carbamate enters the urea reactor bottom where it reacts with the
carbon dioxide compressed feed.
The carbon dioxide feed, drawn to the Urea Unit battery limits, from the rel.evant Ammonia Unit, at
0.18 bar g pressure and 45'C temperature, enters the CO2 Compressor, PK-1 001, and leaves it at a
pressure of about 157 bar g.
A small quantity of air is added to the carbon dioxide feed at the PK-1001 suction in order to
passivate the stainless steel surfaces of H.P. loop items, thus protecting them from corrosion due to
both the reagents and reaction products.
The reaction products leaving the reactor flow to the upper part of Stripper, E-1001, which operates
at about 147 bar g. It is avertical in-tube falling film decomposer in which the liquid is distributed on
the heating surface as a film and flows by gravity to the bottom. In practice it is a vertical shell-and-
tube exchanger, with the heating medium on the shell side, and liquid upper head onthe upper tube
sheet specially designed to permit the uniform distribution of urea solution. In fact, each tube has an
insert-type distributor (ferrule) designed to put the feed uniformly around the tube waU in·film form.
The holes of the ferrule act as orifices and their diameter and liquid head control theflbw rate. As
the liquid film flows, it is heated and decomposition of carbamate and surface evaporation occur.
The carbon .dioxide content of the solution is reduced by the stripping action oUhe ammonia as it
boils out of the solution. Thevapour formed (essentiaUy ammonia and carbon dioxide) are removed
by flowing to the top of the tube. The carbamate decomposition heat is supplied .by means of
condensing steam at about 21.. 8 bar g (saturated).
The mixed stream of overhead gases from the Stripper, and the recovered solution from the bottom
of Medium Pressure Absorber, T-1001, enter the Carbamate Condensers, E-1005 AlB, where
except for incondensable gases, is condensed and recycled to the Urea Reactor, R-1 001, by means
of Carbamate Ejector,. J-1 001.
Condensing the process gases at high pressure (about 144 bar g.) permits the production of
saturated steam at 4.9 bar g. in the shell side of 1st Carbamate Condenser, E-1 005 A, and at
3.4 bar g. in the shell side of 2nd Carbamate Condenser, E-1005 B.
From the top of the Carbamate Separator, V-1001, come out the incondensable gases consisting of
inert gases ( passivation air plus inerts with CO 2 from B.L.) containing a little quantity of NH3 and
CO 2 , which are sent directly to the bottom of the Medium Pressure Decomposer, E-1002.

Urea purification and relevant overhead gases recovery take place in two stages at decreasing
pressure, as follows:
It is pointed out that the exchangers where Urea purification occurs are called decomposers
because in these apparatuses the residual carbamate decomposition takes place.
The solution, with a low residual CO 2 content, leaving the bottom of the Stripper, E-1001, is
expanded to the pressure of 19.5 bar g. and enters the upper part of Medium Pressure
Decomposer. This item is mainly divided in three sections:
top Separator, V-1002, where the released flash gases are removed before the solution
enters the tube bundle;
in-tube falling film type Decomposer, E-1002A1S, where the carbonate is decomposed and
the required heat is supplied by means of condensing steam at 4.9 bar g. (in the upper part
of the shell, E-1002A) and cooling of steam condensate directly flowing out of the Stripper
Steam Condensate Separator, V-1009, at about 22 bar g. pressure (in the lower part of the
shell, E-1002/S).
urea solution Holder, Z-1002, where the 1st stage's purified urea solution at 60+63 wt% is
collected.
The NH3 and CO2 rich gases leaving the top separator, V-1002, are sent to the shell side of the
falling film Vacuum Preconcentrator, E-1004, where they are partially absorbed in aqueous
carbonate solution coming from the recovery section at 4.0 bar g.
The total heat from the shell side, due to condensation/absorption/reaction of reagents, is
removed by evaporating urea solution, coming from the 2nd purification step, up to 84+86 wt%,
thus allowing a considerable saving of L.P. steam in the 1st vacuum concentration stage.
From the Vacuum Preconcentrator, E-1004, shell side the mixed phase is sent to Medium
Pressure Condenser, E-1006, where CO 2 is almost totally absorbed and condensation/reaction
heat is removed by cooling water coming from Ammonia Condenser, E-1009.
The mixed phase effluent from E-1006 flows to the Medium Pressure Absorber bottom, T-1 001,
where the gaseous phase coming up from the liquid phase enters the rectification section. This
is of bell-cap trays type and performs CO 2 absorption and NH3 rectification.
The trays are fed by pure reflux ammonia, in order to balance the energy entering the column,
and to remove residual CO 2 and H2 0 contained in the rising stream of gaseous ammonia and
inerts.

810312 20
Reflux NH3 is drawn from the Ammonia Receiver, V-1005, and sent to column by means of
Ammonia Booster Pump, P-1005 AlB.
A gaseous current of saturated ammonia and inert, with a few ppm of CO 2 (20-100 ppm)
residue, comes out the top of the rectification section, it is partially condensed in the Ammonia
Condenser, E-1009. From here two phases are sent to the Ammonia Receiver V-1 005.
The uncondensed stream, saturated with ammonia, leaving the V-1005, rises along the
Ammonia Recovery Tower, T-1005, where an additional amount of ammonia is condensed by
means of the descending liquid ammonia stream coming from the Urea Unit B.L.
The gaseous stream leaving the T-1005 top, rises along the Medium Pressure Ammonia
Absorber E-1 011, where its residual ammonia content is drastically reduced by means of
countercurrent stream of an ammonia water diluted flow which absorbs gaseous ammonia. As
the ammonia in the gas phase is absorbed, heat is generated which increases the temperature
of descending liquid, thereby tending to impede further ammonia absorption. To maintain the
temperature at a favorable level a coaling water flow is provided in the shell side of E-1 011.
The M.P. Inerts Washing Tower T-1003, connected to the upper part of E-1011, consists of
three valve trays where the inert gases are submitted to a last washing step by means of the
pure water addition. Here the ammonia content of gas raising stream is minimal and
consequently the temperature is less sensitive to absorption heat. Finally the inerts are
collected to the vent stack.
From the bottom of E-1011 the NH3 - H2 0 solution is recycled back to the Medium Pressure
Absorber, T-1001, by means of the centrifugal pump P-1007 AlB.
The T-1 001 bottom effluent is recycled, by means of H.P. Carbonate Solution centrifugal Pump
P-1002 AlB, to the synthesis recovery section after pre-heating in the tube side of H.P.
Carbonate Pre heater, E-1013. In this exchanger the shell side heating fluid is the process
condensate from the bottom of Distillation Tower, T-1002.
The solution, with a very low residual CO2 content, leaving the bottom of the M.P. Decomposer
is expanded to the pressure of 4.0 bar g. and enters the upper part of Low Pressure
Decomposer. This item is mainly divided in three sections:
top Separator, V-1003, where the released flash gases are removed before the solution
enters the tube bundle;
in-tube falling film type Decomposer, E-1003, where the carbonate is decomposed and the
required heat is supplied by means of condensing L.P. steam at 4.9 bar g. (saturated);
urea solution Holder, Z-1003, where the 2nd stage's purified urea solution at 69+71 wt% is
collected.
The gases leaving V-1003 are firstly mixed with the vapors coming from rectification section of
the Distillation Tower, T-1002, and subsequently sent to shell side of H.P. Ammonia Preheater,

E-1007, where they are partially condensed. The condensation heat is recovered on tube side
where the H.P. liquid ammonia (feed to urea reactor) is preheated.
The E-1007 shell side effluent is sent to L.P. Condenser, E-1008, where the remaining NHa and
CO 2 vapors are totally condensed. Condensation heat is removed by cooling water flowing in
the tube side.
The carbonate solution at the exit of E-1008 is recovered into Carbonate Solution Accumulator,
V-1006. From here the carbonate solution is recycled back to the M.P. Absorber bottom, T-
1001, by means of centrifugal pump, P-1003 AlB, through the shell sides of Vacuum
Preconcentrator, E-1004, and then M.P. Condenser, E-1006.
One little part of the low pressure carbonate solution is used also as reflux into rectification
section of Distillation Tower, T-1002.
The V-1006 is designed with a Low Pressure Inarts Washing Tower, T-1004, in order to help
the pressure control of 2nd recovery stage. T-1004 is connected to the upper part of E-1012
where cooling water is provided to remove the absorption heat.
JOB UNIT No.
810312 20
The urea solution leaving the bottom of L.P. Decomposer is expanded to the pressure of 0.33 bar
abs. and enters the upper part of Vacuum Preconcentrator. This item is mainly divided in three
parts:
top Separator, V-1004, where the released flash gases are removed before the solution enters
the tube bundle. Vapors are extracted by 1st Vacuum System, PK-1003;
intake falling film type Concentrator, E-1004, where the low residual carbonate is decomposed
and water is evaporated. The required heat is supplied by means of partial condensation (in the
shell side) of overhead gas coming from the M.P. Decomposer;
bottom liquid Holder, Z-1004, where the urea solution at 84+87% wt. is collected.
The urea solution leaving the Vacuum Preconcentrator Holder, Z-1004, is sent by 85% Urea
Solution Pump, P-1006 AlB, to the bottom of 1st Vacuum Concentrator, E-1014. It operates at the
same pressure (i.e. 0.33 bar abs.) as E-1004 tube side.
Saturated steam at 3.4 bar g is supplied to the E-1014 shell side to concentrate the urea solution
flowing in the tube side.
The mixed phase coming out from the process side of E-1014 enters the 1st gas-liquid Vacuum
Separator, V-1014, from where vapors are again extracted by the 1st Vacuum System, PK-1003,
while the urea melt (- 95 wt%), by gravity flow, enters the bottom of 2nd Vacuum Concentrator, E-
1015, operating at a pressure of 0.03 bar abs.
Saturated steam at 3.4 bar g. is supplied to the E-1015 shell side to concentrate the urea melt
flowing in the tube side.
The mixed phase coming out from the process side of E-1 015 enters the 2nd gas-liquid Vacuum
Separator, V-1 015, from where vapors are extracted by the 2nd Vacuum System, PK-1004, while
the urea melt (- 99.75 wt%) is sent to prilling section.
"-"
d) Urea prilling
The melted urea leaving the 2nd Vacuum Separator Holder, Z-1015, is sent to the Prilling Bucket Z-
1009 AlB by means of centrifugal pump P-1 008 AlB.
Droplets of molten urea from the prilling bucket fall along the natural draught Prilling Tower, Z-1008,
and solidify and cool while encountering a countercurrent air flow.
Some residual ppm of free ammonia are contained in the urea melt coming from the Holder Z-1015,
and could be released to the atmosphere, entrained by the cooling air flowing through the Prilling
Tower.
In order to reduce its emission, a 98% sulphuric acid solution is taken from relevant storage tank,
TK-1005, and injected in the melt by means of proportioning pump, P-1020 AlB, at the suction of P-
1008 AlB pump. In this way H2S04 reacts with NH3 giving ammonium sulphate, which mixes and
solidifies togheter with the urea product.
Solid prills are collected at the centre of Prilling Tower bottom by means of the conical double arm
Rotary Scraper, Z-1007, and through a conical hopper, they fall onto Prilling Tower Belt Conveyor,
N-1001.
The screen Z-1012, downstream of N-1001, removes any urea lumps or agglomerates which are
discharged directly and dissolved in the underground Urea Close Drain Tank, TK-1003, through
Urea Recycle Belt Conveyor N-1 002.
Finally the urea product is sent to B.L. by the Product Belt Conveyor N-1003.
N-1003 is provided with a weight sensitive single bridge type scale, W-1001.

This section provides conditions to process the water containing NH 3-C0 2 and urea coming out of
Vacuum Systems, so as to have an almost NH 3-C0 2-urea free process condensate to be sent to
B.L.
The process water containing NH 3, CO 2 and urea, coming from the Vacuum Systems, is collected in
the Process Condensate Tank, TK-1002, together, if necessary, with the drain waters accumulated
into underground Carbonate Close Drain Tank, TK-1004, and fed to TK-1 002 by means of pump P-
1016 NB. From TK-1002 the process condensate is pumped, by means of P-1014 NB, to the upper
part of Distillation Tower, T-1002.
Before entering the column the process condensate picks-up heat from:
• the purified condensate leaving the bottom of distillation column itself, by means of 1st
Preheater, E-1016;
the steam condensate at 120°C, leaving the Steam Condensate Accumulator, V-1010, by
means of 2nd Preheater E-1017.
The Column T-1002 is provided with 55 trays and it is divided into two main portions by a chimney
tray perched between the plates numbered (from the bottom) 35 and 36.
The condensate from the chimney tray is drawn and pumped, by centrifugal pump P-1 015 NB, to
Urea Hydrolyzer, R-1002, where process conditions are suitable to decompose urea into CO 2 and
NH 3. R-1002 itself behaves as a reactor and live steam is added so as to provide enough heat to
decompose urea.
The outcoming vapors from the Hydrolyzer as well as the vapors from the top of the Distillation
Tower are mixed with the L.P. decomposer overhead gas, upstream of E-1 007 for heat recovery.
The hydrolyzed condensate leaving the bottom of R-1002, after decreaSing its temperature when
passing through Hydrolyzer Preheater, E-1018, enters the Distillation Tower immediately under the
chimney tray, where the final NH3 and CO2 stripping takes place. Steam (at a press. 'of 4.9 bar g.),
injected directly into the Column bottom, provides the necessary stripping driving forces.
The purified process condensate leaves the column bottom at 157"C is sent to S:L: after cooling to
45°C by means of :
• H.P. carbonate preheating in E-1013;
distillation tower feed preheating in E-1016;
final cooling by river cooling water in E-1024, Purified Condensate Cooler.

The contaminants (Le. NH3 -C0 2 -urea) in this treated water are reduced to few ppm and it's easy to
foresee convenient utilization due to its good characteristics.
During start-up and section upsets the processed condensate is recycled to the Process
Condensate tank, TK-1002, until it contains the specified ppm of NH3 and urea.

f) Auxiliary installations
To make the Urea unit operation easier, the following auxiliary installations have been provided:
In the same tank it has also been envisaged to recover the urea solution coming from Urea
Close Drain Tank, TK-1003, after being filtered through Filters FL-1001NB.
The urea solution contained in TK-1001 can be heated by means of LP. saturated steam.
g) Steam networks
The steam of this network is also used for Urea Hydrolyzer R-1002.
• =
M.L.P. saturated steam network at p 4.9 bar g and T = 158°C
The steam of this network is produced in 1st Carbamate Condenser E-1005 A or it is obtained
by boosting the 3.4 bar g steam, by means of 21.8 bar g. steam. It is used in the upper part of
M.P. Decomposer, E-1002 A, in L.P. Decomposer, E-1003, and also injected into the bottom of
Distillation Tower, T-1002.
Should the M.L.P. steam be in excess, the extra steam produced would be reinjected into the
CO2 compressor steam driver turbine.
• =
L.P. Saturated steam network at p 3.4 bar g and T 147"C=
The steam of this network is produced in 2nd Carbamate Condenser, E-1005 B, and it is
utilized in the following equipment or services:
. flushing.
The steam condensate coming from L.P. networks and from tracing are collected into Steam
Condensate Receiver, V-1010, operating at a pressure of about 1 bar g and temperature of 120'C.
The flash steam rises along the countercurrent packed Steam Recovery Tower, T-100S, where it is
condensed by a descending subcooled condensate quench, recirculating at a temp. of 45'C. That
condensate is first cooled in E-1017, where heat is recovered by preheating the process water
solution to Distillation Tower T-1 002, and finally in E-1023 by C.w.
The condensate collected in the accumulator V-1 01 0 is returned to battery limits by means of
centrifugal pump P-1013 AlB, performing also the level control of Condensate Accumulator itself.
An adequate steam let-down system assures that M.P.,M.L.P. & L.P. steam networks remain under
pressure control during normal operation or partial/total urea unit upset, start-up and shut-down
conditions.
h) Flushing networks
Three flushing networks have been provided in the Urea unit operating at the following pressures:
very high pressure flushing (KW) p = 175 bar g.;
high pressure flushing (HW) p = 22.5 bar g.;
low pressure flushing (LW) p = 9.0 bar g.
Low pressure flushing is used in the remaining parts of the urea unit.
The condensate at 120'C, from the receiver V-1 01 0, is used to produce all the above mentioned
flushings. The centrifugal pump P-1010 AlB is provided for HW flushing and also, after pressure
reduction, for LW flushing. Cold flushing condensate at 50'C is also provided by the cooler E-1010.
Reciprocating pump, P-1 011, downstream and in series with P-1 010 AlB, is used to produce KW
flushing.

FOREWORD
The purpose of this specification is to give some general requirement for the
piping design of the urea plant. The indications reported are in accordance with
the characteristics of the process fluids themselves, the tendency to crystallize of
the urea and carbonate solutions, and the long experience of Snamprogetti in
the design and operation of the plants.
The deviations from the general prescriptions have to be discussed case by case
with the Licensor in order to prevent/avoid unexpected modifications to be
realized at site.

2. P&IDs issued for the Process Design Package have to be completed during
Basic and Detailed Engineering phases. Configuration of the PDP is only the
minimum requirement from the process design point of view.
S. Vacuum systems PK-1003 & PK-1004 shall be positioned at min 11 m from the
top of TK-1 002 and balance legs to TK-1 002 shall have maximum slope.
6. All steam traps shall be sized and designed during detailed engineering phase in
function of the discharged steam condensate flowrate. Floating type steam trap
are suggested for continuous service and thermostatic type for discontinuous
service (steam jacketed lines).
7. On H.P. loop angle valves plug direction must be according to P&ID indication.
S. The second block valves located on the discharge of P-1001 AlB pumps and
indicated on P&ID P-41 shall be installed on reverse position in order to avoid
H.P. liquid seepage to the stand-by pump when the main one is running.

10. Connection of lines of small diameter to the main process lines (washing
connections) of HP process piping shall be realized utilizing the special lens
gaskets according to SP std. TB-5002. This is to avoid to punch HP loop piping
as much as possible and having the washing connection at minimum distance
from the block element.
11. All the washing connections (LW, HW and KW) shall be realized respecting the
distances and configuration indicated on P&ID P-53.
12. Line from urea reactor R-1001 to urea stripper E-1001 has to be designed
avoiding pocket or horizontal pipes. Slope shall be in direction from R-1001
outlet nozzle to E-1001, urea solution inlet nozzle. The location of R-1001 outlet
butterfly valve shall be at about 2 meters from E-1001 inlet nozzle to avoid the
flashing of the solution in the nozzle itself.
13. Expansion joints are normally provided at the following point in order to avoid
piping compensation loops that might create dead points where crystallization
can occur:
14. Urea melt three way valves system (HV-1032A and HV-1032B) shall be located
on the top of prilling tower inside the buckets room.
15. Install drain at all lowest line point. All drain points of carbonate or urea solution
lines shall be provided with washing connections and relevant drain as shown on
P.&I.D. P-53.
16. Install all valves in accessible and approachable point for operation. Platforms
shall be adequate to allow easy operation and maintenance.
17. All instruments and vessels level connections shall be approachable for
operation and maintenance.
18. Equipment and operating points shall be provided with gangways and all the
necessary inspection facilities. In particular all the weep holes of Reactor R-
1001, Stripper E-1001 Carbamate separator V-1001 ans Carbamate Condensers
E-1005 AlB shall be easily inspectionable.

19. CO2 compressor discharge line to Reactor R-1001 and urea melt line in between
V-1014 and E-1015 shall have the elbows of long radius type (R=5DN).
20. PSV connected to process lines shall be located as close as possible to the
protected vessel and the connecting line shall be as short as possible avoiding
pocket and horizontal pipe. For H.P: loop PSV special pieces are provided in
order to flange the safety valve directly on the process pipe. In the other sections
spool pieces shall have minimum length in order to prevent dead pOints with
consequent plugging and dangerous consequences.
21. Blow down lines and branches have to be always flushed with low-pressure
steam in order to prevent crystallization. Moreovere the slope of the piping shall
be always toward the BD header and finally to the separator V-1011. 8elf-
draining pipes has to be provided.
25. Plug valves with included washing connection on carbonate and urea solution
lines shall be installed according to the following sketches, thus to allow washing
of the process line when the main valve is opened.
condensate condensate
condensate (normally closed;
it may be opened)
Exception has to be made for suction and discharge valves of P-1006A1B and
P-1008A1B that shall be assembled in such a way that entrance of washing
water to the process is avoided any time the main valve is opened. That is to
prevent product quality deterioration. The assembly of the above mentioned
valvesshall be as per the following sketches:

condensate
(it may not be opened, condensate
condensate nor leak into the process)
The reason for this difference is the following. In the first case the possibility
to inject condensate has to be ensured when the process fluid is flowing,
while inthe second one the condensate should never be injected when in the
line the process fluid is flowing and condensate leakage into the process line
must be avoided,

2. PROJECT
The selection of instrumentation for Urea plants shall take into account the characteristics of
the process fluid that is particularly aggressive and the tendency of the lines connecting the
instruments to the process (primary) to get plugged.
Urea plants have been classified, for the purposes of explosion hazards, as non hazardous,
except for the top of the prilling tower; this area is classified as Zone 2.
Electrical equipment enclosures may therefore be waterproof except for those of the
instruments mounted in the prilling tower top which may be explosion-proof or intrinsic safety
type.
Instruments mounted on the field shall not contain copper or copper alloys due to the
presence of ammonia vapours and urea dust in the plant atmosphere. However, copper
material can be accepted only in case the interested part cannot be in contact with an
atmosphera of ammonia vapours.
All instrument tubings, air supply and pneumatic signals, including compression fittings,
shall be made of stainless steel.
The electric contacts of sensors installed in the plant shall, whenever this is possible or
applicable, be immersed in inert atmosphere.
When electronic circuits are to be erected on site, they shall be treated with suitable
protective paint.
Instruments shall be installed in positions where there is no possibility of process fluid leaks.
2.2.1. The suggestions of this design practice should be followed for the selection of instruments
defined for UREA SERVICE. In the case of pressure and temperature instruments, account
should also be taken of the requirements of Snamprogetti standard STD.TB.5002.
2.2.2. The material to be used for instruments and valves on high pressure UREA SERVICE shall
conform to the provisions of Snamprogetti specification SPC.CR.UR.51 O.
It has been endeavoured to overcome the difficulty of the corrosive action exerted by
carbamate and urea by utilising corrosion resistant material, whenever possible, or by using
installation techniques aimed at preventing corrosion. In particular stagnant zone has to be
avoided to the maximum possible extent in order to prevent corrosion and/or clogging
phenomena.
The solutions indicated in the following pages propose the most commonly adopted methods.

3.1. General
Mass flow meter instrument must be used for flow rate measurement of ammonia feed to the
urea plant.
3.3.1. Application
Flow rate measurement of carbamate coming from absorption column T-1001 that is being
sent to the H.P. carbamate condensers by centrifugal pumps.
When centrifugal pumps are used, carbamate flowrate measurement is made by a magnetic
flow meter mounted at the suction of the pumps. The installation of this instrument shall be
such to avoid stagnant liquid during shut down conditions. In fact the liquid might crystallize
affecting the correct operability of the instrument.
Note: Care should be taken to ensure that the line is cleaned by hot water or steam having a
maximum temperature equal to or less than the value that can be withstood by the
magnetic flow meter lining.

3.4.1. The flow rate measurement of C02 to urea reactor is made by means of a nozzle or orifice
plate installed on the compressor delivery line, at the following conditions:
Consider that under this conditions CO 2 has not to be treated as a perfect gas.
It is suggested to install the differential pressure transmitter at higher level than the process
line on separate pole, and being at minimum distance from the process line itself.
When centrifugal pumps are used, flow rate measurement of the ammonia sent to the
reactor is made using a nozzle or orifice plate.
To safeguard integrity, centrifugal pumps shall be provided with a recycle loop assuring a
minimum flow rate through the pump even when the plant is running at a reduced charge.
The protection circuit is ensured by measuring the flow rate on the pump suction by means of
an orifice device recycling if necessary a certain quantity of ammonia.
Great care should be taken in the choice of recycle valve in view of the pressure differential
to be obtained (pump delivery pressure of 230 bar, suction pressure of 20 bar).
The appropriate valves are multistep type (MASONEILAN, FISHER, PARCOL). Cage type
valves are absolutely unsuitable.
3.4.3. Flow rate measurement of water with small percentages of carbamate or urea
The measurement, if required, is made by orifice plate where the connection branches to the
differential pressure transmitter are flushed with water or low pressure steam.
Preference is given to steam flushing since it dissolves any carbamate that may have
deposited.
A typical diagram of the installation is shown in FIG.1.

4. PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS
4.1. General
a) the material of parts wetted by the process fluid (a portion of the material used for
construction is used for making the specimens required for the performance of the
corrosion test)
b) the sheet steel for construction of the diaphragm (a portion of the sheet steel is used for
the performance of the corrosion test)
c) welding of the diaphragm to the sensor body. Since the Huey test is a destructive test it
obviously cannot be performed on the instrument being fabricated. The purpose of the
test is to ascertain that the welding method employed guarantees the integrity of the
mechanical characteristics of the material.
The test procedure consists in preparing a sample consisting of sheet steel and a
specimen and then in welding the edges of the sheet steel to the specimen so as to
avoid infiltration of sulphuric acid (that is used in the corrosion test) under the
diaphragm, since this would compromise the successful result of the test.
The test consists in ascertaining the magnitude of the corrosion that has occurred.
It is clear that the tests are rather costly and therefore tests a) and b) can be carried out for
lots of material which will be punched if the test is successful. The costs can therefore be
spread over several material supplies.
The welding (diaphragm to separator body) of all finished parts shall be subjected to the
liquid penetrant test.

5. LEVEL MEASUREMENTS
5.1. General
Some solutions are proposed below for the measurement of fluids whose characteristics
have particular installation requirements such as line washing or the use of instruments with
operating principles differing from those normally utilised.
5.2.1. Application
Two types of level meters have been experimented over the years:
a) Differential pressure transmitter: This meter measure the pressure difference of the liquid
head assuming the density to be constant; the connection lines to the instrument are
flushed with water.
The main components of the flushing circuit are:
2 No,Pumps, one in operation and the other standby stating up on failure of the first one,
controlled by a pressure switch
flow rate: 50 I/h
delivery pressure: 200 bar g
set pressure of PSV: 220 bar 9
4 No Dampers of 1 litre
flushing fluid: hot water
filters: 30 micron
restriction orifices
rotameters, with built-in needle valves, of 60 I/h (Fischer and Porter model 10 A
1227 N or equivalent).
b) Radioactive transmitter: This meter measure the residual radiation that is not retained by
the process fluid whose level is to be measured.
A typical feature of these instruments is that they have a high time constant (to diminish
the radioactive activity of source) so that the indication of the instrument does not
faithfully reproduce rapid variations in the process. They are however acceptable for level
control. The instrument requires practically no maintenance and once installed its
residual radioactivity at a distance of about 1 m is practically nil. The supplier shall in any
case check whether it is necessary to install a lead protective screen. The screen cannot
cover the weep inspection holes on the HP equipment
An advantage of choosing radioactive instruments is that the purge and associated
pumps are not required. A greater knowledge of these instruments, which involve
practically no radiation risks and are easy to install, is resulting in their being increasingly
used.
A typical sketch of such an installation is given in Figures 5 and 6.

5.4.1. Apr!lications
Continuous measurement of the Urea level in rnedium and low pressure decornposers.
For this measurement two types of level meters have been experimented over the years:
a) Capacitance probe transmitters with radio frequency peramplifier: this solution prevent
process material build-up, is widely used and gives good results.
Capacitance transmitter shall be used when downstream Urea Plant there is the priJIing
unit.
Further details are given at point 5.5.2.
b) Differential pressure transmitters with steam flushing: the pressure difference of the liquid
head is measured assuming the density to be constant.
This is a simple and reliable solution. shall be used when downstream urea plant there is
the granulation unit.
A typical sketch of the installation is shown in Figure 10.

5.5.1. Application
The choice of the instrument depends on the type of process that is used to obtain the
finished product.
Three processes are used industrially: prilling, granulation and crystallisation.
In the case of prilling, urea in the vacuum evaporator must contain a very low percentage
of moisture, which is ensured by full vacuum system.
For level measurement in the evaporator, the choice of a capacitance probe is
compUlsory.
Some details about probes are given in paragraph 5.5.2.
This measurement is based on the principle of the capacity that is established between the
two electrodes.

7.1.1. General
The valves described hereafter are included in the "UREA SERVICE" category. The materials
and tests for high presslJre valves shall conform to the requirements of SNAMPROGETTI
specification SPC.CR.UR.510; connections shall conform to the piping specifications and,
where applicable, to SNAMPROGETTI standard STD.TB.HPU.5002.
7.1.2. Design
a) Construction
The major elements characterizing the valves for "UREA SERVICE" are:
Owing to the oxidizing property of 02, the air admitted into the process creates a surface
which is more resistant to corrosion.
Note 1: Due to the great importance of the valves for "UREA SERVICE", only
Suppliers of proven experience shall be used for reliable plant operation.
Note 2: Valves on urea high pressure circuits may cause noise; the only remedy
consists in insulating the valves and the lines on which they are installed.
Valve internals are designed to satisfy severe operating conditions to the
detriment of noise.
Note 3: The commercial material HVD1 is produced at present by the German firm

b) Installation
The inlet of process fluid into angle valves (from the bottom or the side) will be as
recommended in the following pages; different .solutions may be adopted for plant
requirements, after agreement by the PIPING department. However, the necessary
. information shall always be provided to the Supplier.
It is important that this valve has no leaks; any leaks will reduce production.
In the case of non-optimal conditions of plant operation and C02 vent to the atmosphere,
ice will form at or near the seat/plug (due to C02 expansion) resulting in improper closing.
The valve shall be cage type with jacketed body to permit heating; care shall be taken not
to oversize the valve because sudden discharge of great amounts will affect the proper
operation of the compressor.
Required seal class: IV minimum according to ANSI 8-16.104.
These valves are necessary when centrifugal pumps are used in H.P. ammonia and
carbamate loops. Avoid oversizing to obtain proper operation at minimum flowrate
(overflow of excess flowrate).
The seal class required for ammonia recycle valves is class IV, according to ANSI 816.104.
c) Three-way switch valve for liquid urea to Drilling tower or recovery tank.

8.1. General
All valves that belong to the "UREA SERVICE" category have the same characteristics,
except for rating which will conform to the piping specification requirements.
8.2. Design
8.2.1. Sizing
Sizing will be in accordance with the codes and standards required by the project (API/
ASME).
8.2.2 Installation
There must be no dead zones between the valve body and the process line (forged block for high
pressure loop).
Nozzle must be connected directly on process line by lens gasket and stud bolts.
Intermediate spool piece is not allowed
8.2.2. Construction
For valves in urea and carbamate service at high, medium and low pressure, the construction
material of the plug and seat must be HDV1. Under normal operating conditions, the process
fluid is not in contact with the body, which can therefore be AISI 316. Only under discharge
conditions, the process fluid is in contact with the body; for this reason, washing downstream
of the plug is provided.
Inlet connections shall conform to piping specifications and, where applicable, to
SNAMPROGETII standard STD.TB.5002 (high pressure side).
9. ANALYZERS
The analyses that are made in the urea plant are very limited due to both the plant inherent
characteristics and the difficulty to be carried out (e.g. analysis of treated water).
The following analyses are normally provided:
• Analysis of 02 in C02
• Analysis of conductivity in steam condensate
• Analysis of the presence of urea/ammonia in the process treated water (normally not
required).
The function of oxygen in the urea plant is to passivate the metal surface wails, thus reducing
the process fluid corrosion. It is however essential that the oxygen amount be limited,
because in the plant there are components such as hydrogen and methane, which may
cause hazardous conditions in certain ratios; hence the need for oxygen measurement. The
operating principle is based on the paramagnetiC effect of oxygen.
The measurement range is 0 - 1%.

The measurement of conductivity aims to check the presence of ammonia or C02 in the
condensate in the case of exchanger tube rupture.
Typical applications are in the steam condensate at plant outlet. on the carbamate
condensers and in the process condensate stream leaving the plant.
