OJT REFLECTION
A. YOUR DEPARTMENT/FUNCTIONAL AREA

a. Describe your department or functional area.

I was a trainee at a company called R.U.Aquino Construction and Development Corporation.
The corporation is headed by Engr. Romeo U. Aquino and their line of business is
construction/infrastructure and equipment rentals. RUA is one of the leading construction
company here in Baguio City.
I started my on-the-job training at RUA last December 19, 2017 and assigned to work with
Engineering Department. The project is a proposed Baguio City branch of Banko Sentral ng
Pilipinas located at Proper Loakan Baguio City. This department is responsible in planning, co-
ordination and supervision of technical aspects of the project. They have a lot of work to be
done including solving technical issues, providing advice, management and preparing reports.

b. Describe the structure, methods of operation and facilities within your department or functional
area.
The department structure is well organized. All employees at every position knows their
expertise and what is expected of them. In my stay, I consult with civil engineers, some who are
specialists in electrical, and others who just have amazing ideas to learn with. There are safety
officers, project supervisors/managers to civil engineers all working in the one office.
The people in this department seemed to be really busy and had so much work to do each day.
Most of the time, they perform day to day inspection and checking for all activities in the site
and ensures activity at the site are followed.

c. Describe your assigned task.

As part of my training, I was told that I will be having work rotations for me to experience both
field and office works.
Office Works
Office works involves checking of rebar cutting lists, estimate of forms and volume of
concrete. Rebar cutting list must be properly checked because it lists the required reinforcing
bars to be fabricated for the structure. In checking of the rebar cutting list, the length of the bar
and the number of bars will be determined. The lap splices will also be checked if it satisfies the
required length.
Under quantity surveying, we are tasked to determine the volume of concrete and the area of
forms needed for a certain structure. The structures that I did participated in surveying are the
columns, beams and slabs for mezzanine floor and the rest of the second floor. For easier
calculations, 3D models and plans of the structure were created.

Field Works
Fieldworks involves inspection and monitoring of progress. For the inspection, it must have
the dimensions presented in the plan.
There is also a housekeeping every day. During housekeeping, me and the safety officer in
charge assign people to pick up scattered materials in the site.

20
d. Summarize how you spent the hours during your construction monitoring including
accomplishments.
The work that I had to complete varied day-to-day depending on what activity was about to
begin or things needed to be done. Some days were quiet, and during these days I work in some
of the CAD works that their working on. Office works such as checking of rebar cutting list,
calculation of forms and volume of concrete. Preliminary checking of rebar cutting list and

estimates are part of my daily routine under the Engineering Department. After the preliminary
checking, the document will be returned to the Project Engineer(supervisor) for review and
approval.
There were many days that I spent my time in the field observing the actual construction
processes. This includes electrical works, scaffolding and formworks, steel works, concrete
pouring and other construction processes. Also, I was able to take pictures during the
construction on the site. As I seek for more learning and knowledge and as a part of my curiosity
as a student, I spent some of my working hours visiting the staff house which is also one of the
building projects in BSP.
The overall experience for me was very worthwhile. I was able to contribute my little knowledge
for the accomplishment of particular tasks. Most importantly, I had the opportunity to interact
with a group of people.

B. YOUR PERFORMANCE AND DESCRIPTION OF PROJECTS, WORK ACTIVITIES, PROGRAMS THAT

WERE PART OF YOUR DUTIES

a. Reflect upon your experience including what you have learned.

Site Inspection
For the inspection, an error of 1 to 3 cm is still acceptable. But for the dimensions where the
mechanical equipment will be installed the dimensions must be exact. It must have the
dimensions presented in the plan.
In pouring concrete, the poured concrete from the pump must only have a fall distance of 1.5
meters because higher fall distance causes segregation in the concrete. Also I learned that
segregation must be avoided because it creates voids in the concrete. Vibrator is also used
during pouring concrete.
In terms of reinforcing bars, they used Grade 60 steel for main bars and Grade 40 bars for
bracing such as stirrups. Also one of the Engineers told me that they also use Grade 33 instead
of Grade 40/60, I’m not sure. They tend to change the color painted at the end of the bars. This
is because the bars required are not available at that time, and they don’t risk any delay in the
project.
During my lecture with the Site Engineer, the vertical bars and horizontal bars in the columns
and retaining walls are placed differently. In columns, the vertical bars are braced by the
horizontal bars. But for retaining walls, the vertical bars are placed outside and the horizontal
bars are placed inside. According to him, this is due to the manner of failure of the structure.
Polyethylene and miller board (Styrofoam) are also used in the site. I have also learned the
purpose of these two materials. Polyethylene sheets are put on slab on grade to avoid the
infiltration of water that comes from the concrete when pouring. The Styrofoam’s are used as
separator for columns and slab on grade, walls and slab on grade to avoid the contact when an
earthquake occurs.
I was able to identify the slabs and their reinforcement. Where slabs are continuous over the
beam, top rebar which laid out into both slab panels meeting on the beam. At mid spans on
both directions, main rebar is placed as a bottom bars.
For a beam, main reinforcement is placed at the bottom in the mid span and at top of beam
over the supports. Also during the inspection, it should be ensured that spacing blocks are
installed underneath the bottom bars.

21
Circular and rectangular columns have been adopted in the project. Main reinforcement is put
vertically to take axial load and with column ties around them to ensure shear resistance.
Through experience and observation, another valuable lesson that I learn was that in the site.
Having a lot of people with different strengths and skills, they work together and organize their
work in sync so they were able to complete their work efficiently. The project is fast progressing
with the contractor working in two structures simultaneously. The construction project
including cranes, trucks, bulldozer, concrete pumps and several concrete mixing plants from
Goldrich and RUA have been incorporated making the work efficient.

b. What content from your coursework did you apply to your experience? What courses did you
find most helpful? Name at least 3 examples.
Working on site was enjoyable for me as it did make me use all the knowledge I learned at the
University in every course of Civil Engineering. The task given to me was an application of
Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), Building design, Reinforcing Bar Details, Theory of Structures,
Reinforced Concrete Design, Construction Materials & Testing and Construction Management
(Estimates).
The mixing of cements and aggregates to form a concrete mixture and the making of a concrete
cylinder sample has a great in connection to the subject CMT. The drafting of plans using
AutoCAD deals with the study of Drafting and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) itself. The basic
knowledge on estimates which I learned from Construction Methods and Management.

c. What challenges did you face? And how did you address these challenges? (give at least one
example)
My biggest challenge as a trainee was lack of skill set. Going through different tasks was
sometimes difficult as I’m the only trainee at that time. My mind and body were always wanted
to quit and I couldn’t wait to go home. I felt that I had no idea what I’m doing and I lacked
confidence about what I could do and what I’m really good at. Coming into this situation, I
manage to overcome it by asking questions, getting used to everything I do and just observing
the everyday events. Although sometimes I make mistakes along the way, this give me a better
understanding of my skill set.

d. What would you recommend that you do to improve your performance?

By being prepared, feeling more confident in accomplishing the assigned tasks. Not being
afraid to asks questions. Also, asking for feedback on a regular basis, to learn from it and
develop my performance.

22
C. WHAT RECOMMENDATIONS YOU MAY PROVIDE FOR THE ORGANIZATION IN ORDER TO
FACILITATE OJT EXPERIENCES IN THE FUTURE?
none

D. ASSESSMENT OF OJT PROGRAM

a. What have I learned from the experience? (CE related)

My internship with RUA taught me some useful skills and I am very thankful for it. One of is
the importance of small details. Double-checking, making sure things were correct and following
guidelines. Incorrect plans or change in plans could cause misunderstandings and require RFIs,
or if materials do not meet the required specifications, there could be delay in the project. The
smaller details are often not being notice. Many people try to skip these because they are in a
rush to finish. Thankfully, this experience has allowed me to appreciate every step of the
construction process and see the little things are just as important in real life.
As a civil engineering student, the OJT made me realize the importance of the course that I am
taking. It made me realize how important the role of a civil engineer in a company. Civil
engineering can take the work of electrical and civil engineer, but, no other course can take
place the work of civil engineer in a company.

b. My experience with the people around me.

One of the greatest feelings in this OJT is that I was always welcome. They were very open and
happy for me to contribute as much I wanted to, and were open to any questions I ask. This
instantly made me feel comfortable and definitely made me feel as though I was part of the
team. I don’t feel like I’m treated as a trainee, I’m treated as an employee. I’m treated as an
equal and I’m given responsibilities that I feel I’m really contributing to. The people are great,
the work environment is great. The training is all worth it.

c. The most memorable event during my construction monitoring.

--
d. What can I recommend for the improvement of the subject CE435?
The On-the-job training should be taken during school break. It’s hard to excel in the OJT while
balancing a full school schedule at the same time. A 15-21 units a semester, test taking, studying
and being a college student can be proved to be too much for any student. Part-time OJT trainee
students may not have or make the time to complete their assigned work.
I was fortunate enough to take the OJT during the vacation and come out in one piece, with a
paid allowance as a trainee at the company I had interned for.

e. My advice to those who will take their Ce 435 in the near future.
Being confident in saying you don’t know something. Your supervisor is relying on you to get
something done, if you don’t know, say it. This is the best place to ask questions that can never
be taught in a classroom.
