POETRY
Chosen by W.L. Radford: African Poetry for schools
Study the following poem and then answer the questions after.

LIFE IN OUR VILAGE

In our little village
When elders are around
Boys must not look at girls
And girls must not look at boys
Because the elders say
That is not good.

Even when night comes

Boys must play separately,
Girls must play separately,
But humanity is weak
So boys and girls meet.

The boys play hide and seek

And the girls play hide and seek.
The boys know where the girls hide
And the girls know where the boys hide
So in their hide and seek,
Boys seek girls,
And each to each sing
Songs of love.

Lillian Tindyebwa: Recipe for Disaster (16mks)

Study the following passage carefully and then answer the questions after.

“Look at her now. She can never go back to school to complete her education. I also had
the wish to see her as a successful lady in her own right, whether married or not. And now you sit
there and tell me that you destroyed her chances of a good education on the spur of the moment?”
Ntale’s irritation and annoyance were unmistakable.
The other two then looked at each other and kept quiet. Jenny who had so far been listening
silently said, “I am sorry to ask but how old are you Mr. Kerere?”
“I am forty-two, Mama,” Kevin answered.
“Our daughter is only nineteen. So you are more than twice her age, and to be honest with
you, even without taking into consideration the means you used to get her, you are not suitable
for our daughter.”
“But Mama, I’d like to dispute that because I know that Hellen and I are happy together.”
“Maybe, but if you are happy, your happiness will be short-lived because it is not true
happiness.” Jenny was not mincing her words. She had never been a believer in euphemism.
Kevin was rather shocked to hear that kind of statement from his mother-in-law. He stared at
her as if he was about to say something then kept quiet.
Charles, who was anxious to help bring all this to an end by assisting his cousin to win over
Hellen’s parents, and yet anxious also not to spoil his relationship with Ntales said; “Now,
Dear friends, I believe our aim here is to try to correct the situation. We have made mistakes
but we now wish o correct them so that these two young people can get our blessings and live
happily together.”
“Honestly Charles, the way I see this relationship is that it is a case of opportunism and you
cannot expect either me or my wife to bless this kind of relationship,” Ntale said, trying to
control his anger but his voice was still on edge.
“Please, believe me. I love Hellen sincerely and I know we shall be happy if only you could
give me the chance to be a real child in this home,” Kevin said as solemnly as he could and
trying to look as serious as he could.
