To Whom It May Concern:

It is my pleasure to recommend Douglas Muxlow for your consideration. I have worked with Mr. Muxlow
for several years in his role as Elementary School Principal and as Superintendent of Schools. During this
time, I have witnessed his dedication and commitment to improve our district and encourage personal
growth.

Mr. Muxlow has invigorated the district with innovative programs, reinvented classrooms, increased
productivity and communications, and enriched instruction with technology. Through his outstanding
leadership, staff morale improved vastly. In fact, our high school building practically changed overnight
from a negative and toxic environment to a building with one team working together and has become a
great place to work.

The district budget was reworked creatively by Mr. Muxlow and went from “the sky is falling” with salaries
frozen for years, outdated everything, and teachers worrying about their futures to a budget including staff
raises, 21st century classrooms rich with interactive technology and 1:1 iPads, and a feeling that there is
nothing that the district can’t do.

Mr. Muxlow makes himself readily available to staff and students with an open door to his office and a
strong presence in the hallways and classrooms. Not only does he try to know every student and employee,
but also every parent and all the employee’s spouses and their children.

When hiring he refuses to accept mediocre even when it is the only choice. He views hiring as a long-term
commitment that needs to be right. I’ve seen on several occasions when a position was filled temporarily
until a top-notch choice was found.

Teachers and department heads are constantly encouraged to innovate and experiment, meanwhile
reminding that it is better to try and fail than stagnate. In his words, “surround yourself with good people,
give them what they need, and get out of their way.”

Simply stated: Brown City Community Schools is better for having Mr. Muxlow. And, I believe his
professional journey will brighten with each new step he takes.

It is without hesitation I recommend Douglas Muxlow. Not because of how well he has done, but because
of what he will do.

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter of reference is being written for Douglas Muxlow. I worked with him at Brown City Community
Schools for 21 years--his three years as a teacher in both our high school and elementary school, 15 ½ years
as our Elementary Principal, and two and a half years as our Superintendent. During this time, I was the
Elementary School Counselor as well as our K-12 Curriculum Director and Title I Consolidated Grant writer.

Doug is an outstanding administrator. As an instructional leader, he allowed his teachers to be involved in


all levels of decision-making. He set parameters for his staff and identified clear expectations for them in
the never-ending responsibility of school accountability standards that are set by our State. As state
curriculum changed, Doug was innovative in finding ways to have teachers work together in teams,
incorporating common planning time in the schedule and also providing for release time to meet
departmentally and cross-grade level.

At the heart of his leadership skills is the desire to build positive relationships. Doug knows intuitively that
people who are genuinely valued and given respect no matter what their role in our educational system is
an all-important piece of school climate. I watched him treat people every day with dignity, and staff
morale was high because of his common sense. Doug was always an encourager and empowered others to
work efficiently because they knew the parameters expected of them. Parents in our community knew
they had an open door with him as an administrator, and one of Doug’s favorite expressions to his staff was
the fact that we were all responsible for parent’s most prized possessions—their children.

Three and ½ years ago, Doug became our Superintendent. Before I retired in 2016, I worked with him in
developing Title I Budgets, Consolidated Application grants, and School Improvement initiatives. He was
detail-oriented, and enjoyed the challenge of school budgets and operational responsibilities of the entire
district. He leads by example, and has a sense of humor that is refreshing. It helped his staff to stay
positive and enjoy their work with students and each other. Doug was steadfast in attending many extra-
curricular activities that students are involved in, and worked to establish community relationships with
local businesses, Rotary, Park Board, and local churches.

Without reservation, I would highly recommend Douglas Muxlow. He is a true team-player, and incredibly
hard-working. Of all the administrators that I have worked for in an educational career that spanned 41
years, Doug was at the top of the list. Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
