Course 3
Mrs. Everett
III. Materials:
• 1 591 mL empty plastic soda bottle (20 oz.)
• 60 ml of Dawn (1/4 c. dish soap)
• 9 grams of Active Dry Yeast (1 T)
• 60 ml warm H2O
• 120 ml 40% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide)
• a few drops of food coloring
IV. Procedure: The H2O2 was put into an empty plastic bottle. Next, the yeast was mixed
with warm water and set aside while dish soap was added to the bottle. Then the yeast
mix was added into the bottle.
V. Results: The instant that the yeast mix was added to the bottle, the contents began to
foam and overflow to bottle. The reaction took a little over three minutes. One of the
interesting observations was that the color of the foam was marbled. Orange in some
places, blue in others. Another observation was that due to the chemical reaction taking
place inside the bottle, the foam was much hotter than any of the individual ingredients
that had originally been put into the bottle.
