Environmental Science

September Syllabus

Environmental science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological

and information sciences to the study of the environment, and the solution of environmental
problems.Through this program, students should gain a new understanding of the world around
them. By investigating the systems of the Earth and their interactions with humans we can learn
to appreciate the dynamic equilibrium of our planet. Students should also grow to understand
their dependence upon the Earth, its finite resources, and its limited ability to recover from
abuse.

Daily Class Requirements:

1. Pens/ Pencils
2. Notebook
3. Folder

Class Requirements:
The requirements of this course are to complete all the assigned work with a final average of
65% or higher. This requirement includes handing in all completed labs at the end of the year.
Failure to complete all requirements will result in a failing grade

Grading:
Exams/Projects - 35%
Classwork- 20%
Labs - 35%
Participation - 10%

Quizzes:
Quizzes may be given with or without notice. The majority of quizzes will be based on the
previous days content/homework.

Homework:
It is fact that true learning does not occur simply in the classroom. Therefore, homework will be given
occasionally and is expected to be complete. All homework will be based on either that day’s work, or as
an introduction to the next day’s work. The majority of home works will be a simple worksheet, a reading
assignment, or a few questions from the textbook. It is your responsibility to ask me for the work you
missed while you were out which includes getting all notes and/or handouts, and doing the assigned
homework problems

Classroom Procedure:
We will cover a lot of material which is not always in your textbook. There are also enough
handouts to account for half of the rainforest. It is imperative that you maintain a neat, current
and useful notebook. This notebook must be brought into class each and every day of the school
year. Each page in your notebook will include the date and Aim and needs to be kept up to date
just in case a notebook quiz is given.

If for any reason a class will be missed (music program, field trips, etc.), I need to know about it
beforehand. This will allow me to give you the work you will miss. You are responsible for the
work done while you were out. This includes, getting all notes and/or handouts, and doing all
assigned homework. In the event that an absence occurred on the day of a test, it is your
responsibility, to schedule a make-up day, failure to do so will result in a 0% for that exam.

If you are caught talking or communicating in anyway, or caught cheating during a test or
quiz, you will receive a ZERO as your test/quiz grade.

Class Rules:
-Be in your seat and working when the bell rings
-Have all books and materials in class and take IT with you when you leave
-Treat each person with dignity and respect
-Do not write on the furniture
-Follow directions the FIRST time they are given
-No chewed gum on the furniture
-Clean up your work area and PUSH your chair in at the end of class
-Locker/Bathroom passes will not be given the first and last 10 minutes of class
-Cutting class will result in a loss of pass privileges for the remainder of the school year

Help is available by request Monday - Friday (except Thursday).

I have read this and reviewed the information with my child including the lab requirement
portion for Earth Science. I understand that if my student fails to complete any assignments
he/she is responsible for making up the work in a timely manner.
