Office of the Superintendent

October 23, 2018

Good Evening Dearborn Community,

We had a very busy day starting early this morning at the Administration Building where
approximately 120 former PESG employees were processed and signed to temporary contracts
with the Dearborn Public Schools. They were then sent to assignments throughout the district.

Later in the day, I was able to visit seventeen schools. I found classrooms staffed and, except for a few delays here and
there, it appeared to be another day filled with teaching and learning in the Dearborn Public Schools.

In the days ahead the District will continue to place substitutes in buildings. This is not new to Dearborn as many years
ago all substitutes were filled in-house. We are confident that our Human Resource Department, working with building
principals and staff, will do an excellent job of placing substitutes in schools. Please remember, a majority of the
substitutes that will be in the schools are the same people who were working for PESG.

The District will evaluate all available options including working with Wayne RESA (Intermediate School District), to
develop a plan that will meet the long term financial needs of the district and the educational needs of our students. We
will not rush into any long term solution!

They say that in a time of crisis people have a way of bonding, coming together, and putting aside personal needs. Today,
I can say that I witnessed this first hand across our district. It started at the Administration Building where Executive
Directors, Directors, Coordinators, Secretaries and many other staff members came in one and two hours early to help
process substitutes as they arrived in the boardroom. This spirit of cooperation continued into our buildings where
parents were on hand and ready to volunteer their time. Teachers moved into unfamiliar classrooms in order to provide
coverage and others gave up scheduled time off to be in their classrooms. I thank them all for their dedication and their
commitment to providing quality instruction to our students.

I must also take a moment to thank the leaders on the front line that made sure schools were ready for students. Our
principals, teachers, and school secretaries provided that “front line” expertise and experience to ensure all students had
a meaningful day of learning.

Of course, every plan needs a leader and our plan would have never worked if not for the professionalism and leadership
exemplified by Executive Director of Staff and Students Services Ms. Maysam Alie-Bazzi, Ms. Ruth Bankhead Director of
Human Resources, and the entire staff in the Human Resources Department. This group of professionals did an
outstanding job to make the process in the morning run smoothly and ensure classrooms will be covered in the days
ahead.

Our Dearborn Public Schools team came together to address a situation that came without warning. I commend them all
and thank them for their service. I’m confident that we will be able to continue providing all students with quality learning
experience in the days and weeks ahead. I know that when we continue to put Students First we continue to Inspire,
Educate, and Celebrate.

Regards,

Glenn M. Maleyko, Ph.D.
