Lesson Title: The Big Orange Splot(Day 1) 12/4/17


Lesson Type: Whole Group Read Aloud

Weekly Focus Question: Where do I live? Where do my family members live?

Objective: GSWBAT understand why Mr. Plumbean changes his house by reflecting on his actions in the
book.

Book: The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Manus address, borough, city, far, home, near,
Pinkwater neighborhood, roads, street
Mini-lesson
Hook: This week we will read a book about a house that gets splashed with orange paint. Have you ever
gotten something splashed on you or on something that you own?

Beginning: Take a “Picture Walk” through the book first. Model the first few pages of the picture walk.
“When great readers pick up a new book, they always do a picture walk to help them start thinking
what the book will be about.” Students need to know the WHY behind the picture walk. Why is doing
a picture walk helpful? What can they learn from it. Show students the pictures and ask them what
they see and what they think the book will be about. “Let’s get ready to do our PICTURE WALK.”

Middle: Next, read the book without pausing so that students can hear the cadence of the words and
hear the story in its entirety. (Make sure to model your thinking aloud. “Hmm, I see in the picture that
____. I wonder ____.”

End: “I’m excited to read this book again tomorrow and to talk about what Mr. Plumbean does.”

Assessment: (Choose 2-3 students each day to take notes on for TSG)

4-5: Asks and answers questions about the text; refers to pictures
6-7: Identifies story-related problems, events, and resolutions during conversations with an adult

neighbors want Mr. Plumbean to do about the spot?”

End:
“Do you like the changes that Mr. Plumbean made to his house? Why or why not?
