Awards & Honors

AP Scholar - as of July 2019 I will be considered an AP scholar because of my success in AP level

classes.

Academy for Global Studies Merit - Upon graduation, I will have credit for the Academy for Global
Studies. This distinguishment shows that I have participated in globally focused classes and studied many
broad topics that affect the world in our generation. It also shows I have completed numerous trips
involving community service and global leadership.

Distinguished HS Diploma - Upon graduation, I will have graduated with Distinguished honors, which is
the highest graduation honors you can obtain in the state of Texas. This happens by doing more
coursework and changing study habits through AP classes. I will also graduate with multiple
endorsements.

Coursework

University of Texas Austin - Dual Credit Precalculus (Fall 2017 and Spring 2018)
- Dual Credit US History (Fall 2017 and Spring 2018)

Austin Community College - Dual Credit Government (to be taken in Spring 2019)

Extracurricular Activities

Rudy’s Cashier - At a local barbeque restaurant, I am a cashier where customers go to obtain food.
Cashiers are responsible for weighing meats, ringing up food items, and exchanging money, as well as
cleaning up the restaurant during the day and after closing. Working at Rudy’s has given me different
leadership opportunities and taught me a lot about the differences in people and cultures around Austin,
just by meeting my coworkers or talking to customers.

Varsity Choir - At Austin High, I have been in our Women’s Varsity Choir for 3 years. Choir is a really
interesting course because you learn better breathing techniques, music and rhythm, reading music, and
matching with the rest of the choir so that you sound unified rather than scattered, different voices.

JV Rowing - For two years, I competed for Texas Rowing Center on JV Crew. Rowing is another
incredible teambuilding sport because just one wrong move on anyone’s part can completely offset the
balance of the boat. We competed in various regattas and got many first and second places awards for
our rowing center.

Academy for Global Studies - During high school, I enrolled in a magnet program within Austin High
called the Academy for Global Studies. This program put me in classes with other Global Studies
students so that we could learn about global issues, volunteering, and problems in the world as a group.
We also did various service trips to Arkansas, New Mexico, Costa Rica, and Thailand, to either learn
more about our focus of the year or to help local populations and learn about undeveloped issues that the
communities face. I made a portfolio that encompassed my AGS experience—you can visit it at
katyjendrzey.weebly.com.

French Club - During all 4 years of high school, I was in French club. Three of these years I was
president. French Club helped educate people not in the French program about French language and
culture, and also organize other events to help spread awareness for our club and educate others about
French culture.

Women in Computer Science Club - In my senior year, I was one of the founding members of the Women
in Computer Science Club at Austin High. We wanted to get more female involvement in the field and
help others work towards important opportunities that come with having Computer Science knowledge.
We organized talks with professors at UT, shadowed students, and learned to code to help spread the
knowledge of Computer Science amongst women, since Computer Science is such an important field as
our society becomes more involved with technology.

Volunteer Work and Other Projects

Thailand - Will be going in February 2019. This trip will involve assisting locals, learning about Thai
culture and history, etc.

Arkansas - As a freshman, my AGS class went to Heifer ranch in Arkansas to learn about food
sustainability and poverty within different undeveloped countries. We did this as a simulation with our
peers where we divided each other into groups and represented different countries in a vast area that the
ranch had called a “global village”. We attempted to survive on what little food we had, struggled with
starting fires, and came together as teams to make sure that we were all well fed.

New Mexico - Our New Mexico trip in junior year helped sum up our year of learning about Native
American rights and history. In New Mexico, we visited the To’hajiilee, a Navajo reservation, to help the
school there. We divided into groups and helped teach different classes. At the beginning of the year,
some of the teens from the school had come down to Austin and stayed with AGS students, so we got to
see our friends again and also learn more about the differences between our ways of living.

Costa Rica - During my sophomore year, my AGS peers and I visited Costa Rica during our study of
pollution, trash, and upcycling. We stayed at Earth University for the week that we were there, and we got
to see how they made all of their own food, recycled and took care of all of their trash, and how it
impacted the population of students there. We also got to visit fincas, small family-owned farms that all
had different central focuses. During my time in Costa Rica, I visited a finca owned by an elderly lady who
grew cacao, and finca owned by a man who was attempting to regrow the rainforest on the land that he
owned. Costa Rica was the first time I had gone out of the country with AGS, and it helped open up my
eyes to other global opportunities that I could get involved with.

AGS Projects - During my years at AGS, we completed different projects to help the Austin community as
we learned about more globally-focused issues. I helped plan a community garden for a low-income
housing complex, created a water filter with upcycled plastic bottles, presented to a community about
stage 3 water restrictions in Austin, hosted a dog photo shoot to donate the proceeds to a local animal
shelter, created a webpage to raise awareness for Native American mental health, and taught a middle
school class about Japan during World War II and how it affected the nation today.
