CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the problem and its background which include
introduction, statement of the problem, conceptual framework, objectives of the
study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of terms.

INTRODUCTION

Smartphones is a portable device that can be used in communicating other

people through texting or calling It is a handheld device that have application that
can help everyone to access in the internet or social media. It was launched last
April 3, 1973. It was invented by an American Engineer, Mr. Martin “Marty” Cooper.
Nowadays, smartphone has improved a lot. It can use to take pictures that have
wonderful effects which enhance the good appearance of the photo. It is also use to
record and watch videos. In using cellular phones, it could help an individual to be
technologically advanced. Everyone is regularly using their phones, and students are
included on it. As we can see it is widely used around the world. When we look back
to early days, only good aged people follow the news around the world. But
nowadays the trend changed and even school students know what is happening
around the world. How this change took place is nothing other than smartphones
and the internet. Nowadays more searches come from mobile phones rather than
PCs or Laptops for searching news and other useful material and to get know what
happens around the world. Smart plays a major role in our lives, which benefits to
us but also contains more drawbacks. Generally, the smartphone will certainly bring
about a lot of advantages. First of all, the smartphones is considered the quickest
means of communication in our daily lives, we can contact easily with our friends
and our relatives whenever by calling or sending messages. Second, the mobile
phones is also means of entertainment for people. We can listen to music and play
games on smartphone. Moreover, by using the latest apps for smartphones, we can
access to the internet to watch films and check our profile in social media and
update status whenever we are. Final, if we have a smartphone in hand, our
studying become more effective or reference on internet which is useful for
studying. On the other hand, the smartphone is also has many
disadvantages. First, smartphone users become addicted if they are too depends
on it, moreover, the ability of human communication is limited if the smartphone is
more present in some event such as class meetings, on bus, in park. Some people
only focus on their phone without communicating. The use of mobile phones too
much will make people take a lot of time, it’s not only influence on study results
makes students distraction but also it is cause of disease on eyes. Final, we
shouldn’t use smartphone while we are driving because it lead to traffic accidents.

RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign

According to Matchan (2015) on her narrative entitled, school seek balance for
smartphone in class. Are they a teacher tool or a distraction? Stated that, after 20 years
of teaching Mirriam Morgentenstern is calling it quits this month. The Lowell High
School history an ESL teacher is starting an educational non-profit, although that is not
the only reason she is leaving the classroom. Another is her frustration with students and
their smartphones. The texting, tweeting, and snapchatting during class times are “ an
incredible distraction, and makes it much more different to teach”, she said. “ It is pretty
hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video.” It is the most vexing issue of the
digital age for teachers and administrations: what to do about smartphone? Some
maintain that smartphones and other devices in school are crucial to being competitive in
a global market, while others insist that phones and tablets distracts students,
compromising their learning and focus. ‘ You will get kids saying, “I’ll look something
up for English, and while I’m here let me quickly check my Instagram or tweeter feed.”
And now they’re distracted and not really engaged with their lesson plan,” said Janisian a
Brainince psychologist and author of “celling your souls, no app for life,” about how
digital affects young people. A study released in could by the center for economic
performance at the London school at economic looked at 91 schools in four cities in
England, where more than 90% of teenager own a mobile phone. The study found that

Test scores were 6.41% higher at school where cellphone use is prohibited. The
researchers concluded that smartphones “ can have a negative impact on productivity
through distraction,” particularly among low achieving students who benefitted most
from that ban, with achieving students are more likely to be distracted by the presence of
smartphones while high achievers can focus in the classroom regardless of the mobile
phone policy,” according to the study.

According to Weimer (2015) on her narrative entitled, How concerned should we

about cellphone in class. Stated that, as a faculty, it seems we are very concerned about
cellphone in classroom. Articles about how the problems are popping everywhere in
pedagogical literature, and they often are the “most-read” and “most-commented”
articles listed on various websites. Is students use electronic devices that pressing of
pedagogical problem? I have been wondering if our focus on it is not becoming
excessive. No question, it is a vexing problem. Research makes it abundantly clear that
students cannot multitask, despite their beliefs to the country. Even a casual observation
of them texting in class while they are supposed to be listening and taking notes makes it
clear that it is the listening and note taking that are taking short shift. The question is, to
what extent is this a problem for teachers and students?

Does the use of devices make it harder for other students to focus learning task?
More than 60% of a diversified studied cohort said it does, according to a recent survey.
However, 80% of that cohort reported using their cellphones at least once a period, with
75% saying that doing so was either acceptable or sometimes acceptable so, apparently
from the student perspective, we are not talking about a disruption they consider serious.
Perhaps that is because 92% of those in this survey did not believe that using their
phones and negative effects. Lots of points, but here’s the bottom line: I think we can
make the use of electronic devices more important than it merits. Yes it compromises
student learning and we have responsibility to make sure that students understand what
they are doing, but it is our job to present it.

SYNTHESIS:

According to Matchan using smartphone inside the classroom can bring a

distraction. Because it is too hard for the teachers to compete with the funny videos on
YouTube. It is similar to our perspectives because smartphones can get the attention of
the students. So, it can cause to them not to listen and participate in class discussion.
While Weimer stated that, students cannot multitask, it is similar on we think. Because
there are instances that a student is texting while they are supposed to be listening and
taking down some notes. But there also students that can handle their smartphones
multitask with listening to the teacher.

According to a blog by the Wall Street Journal (2014) disclosed elementary school
students who answered that they never played video games on weekends answered 77%
of the questions correctly on a test of basic language skills, compared to 70.5% score
recorded by those who said played two to three hours. Students who said they spent
more than four hours a day playing games scored the lowest, getting only 64% of the
answer correct. Meanwhile in the Philippines, the Department of Education reiterated the
ban on the use of smartphones during class hours through its three orders, namely order
no. 83, series of 2003, order no. 26, series of 2001 and order no. 70, series of 1999.

Also in a recent interview by GMA news TV, child development specialist

Clarissa Reyes stressed that more spent by children using their smartphones could issue
the time allotted supposedly for their studies and daily interactions. She suggested the
following for parents to guide their children on smartphone use and studies:

1. Teach them the time spent on smartphone use on the one day should be added

to their study time or another.

2. Teach them to set their goals so they have the ability to plan what to do to

achieve them

3. Discipline; according to Reyes, “ is according to the management of time and

the priorities of the children.’
According to Cancio (2014) on his narrative entitled Study : Too much
smartphone use linked to lower grades. Stated that everything should be taken in
moderation. So should be use of smartphone especially for children, a study suggested.
The school children wh spend more than four hours a day on their mobile phone
perform significantly worse on school test. Nearly half of third graders at junior high
school in the country spend one hour or more per day using smartphone, which over
10% spending four hours or more over of half sixth graders at elementary school have
mobile phones. Student who spend more time on mobile phone use, such as e-mail and
browsing internet sites, tend to have poorer results in terms of academic performance,
according to the study.

SYNTHESIS:

According to Wall Street, student who spend using smartphone for four hours a
day got low scores in tests. It is similar on what Concio said, that students who are
regularly and fond of using their smartphones perform significantly worse on school
tests. We agreed on that because if a student is busy on using their smartphone, they did
not have time to review their lessons and can’t give more focus on studies because of the
distraction of smartphone.

According to Barack (2013) the study from researchers at the university of

Haifa in Israel, focuses on
the 9-12th grade students at three different high schools. Out of the 591 students
surveyed, a whopping 95 percent
said they regularly sent emails or text during classroom lessons, while 94 percent said
they browed file-sharing
sites or social media sites like Facebook. Listening to music is another popular
classroom activity, according to
93 percent students, while 91percent of students, admitted to talking on their phones
during class. Over all, 60
percent of students use their cellphones in class, with 10th graders the most aggressive
cellphones users and 12th
graders picking up their phones the least, according to the survey. This may present a
sobering reality check to
many educators in K-12 school who have been looking for the best way to incorporate
digital tools into their
classroom. Already the number of web-connected computer per student is increasing
rapidly across the country.
In 2000, the ratio of students to teach internet connected computer was 6.6 kids per
every device, according to
the National Center for Education Statistics that number had jumped to 3.1 kids per
device.

Successful school program utilize digital devices in ways that keep kids engaged,
such as conducting polls
during civics lessons or searching for materials on a school library site. But in practice
,there can be big difference
between the efficacy of using school-issued laptops and tablets compared with
students own devices ,at least
among the older grades, according to the studies.

According to Book Blog(2015) on their research study entitled the use of mobile
devices in the college
classroom .Stated that ,walking around campus, cellphones are ubiquitos .What do
students with their cellphones
they walk into their classroom ? In one survey at sit different universities ,college
students responded using their
cellphones an average of 11 times per day in class In other study 92%of college
student reported using their
cellphones to send text message during class .Recently, a faculty member asked me
for advice about policies
regarding cellphones in mobile devices in class.Indeed, this is a hot topic and at
universities across the countries .
I was curious about the research basis regarding cellphone in class, so i do a bit reading.
I found a number of
studies examining mobile devices in the college classroom; not surprisingly ,the evidence
suggest that cellphones
generally are a distraction for students .Broadly we are not wired to multitask well, and
using cellphones during
class is no expectation .Several studies have compared students who texted frequently
took lower quality notes,
retained less information, and did worse is that mobile devices usage is disracting to
nearby students. In several
surveys, students have reported that texting is distracting to nearby students.

SYNTHESIS:

The foreign related studies are consisted of research thesis works, and studies of
persons and groups that
represented how cellular phone can help the academic performance of the students. It can
help the readers to be
aware on those kind of issue. According to Barrack which stated that there arelot of
students with an average of
95% who regularly use their smartphones during class hours .It is different on our beliefs
.Because if a student is
using their smartphones during class hours ,they could not focus on the class hours, they
could not focus on the
class discussion.

According to Libero (2017) on his research entitled ,uses of the cellphone

for the education in the
Philippines and Mongolia. Stated that , cellphone now is the most widely use
medium in Asia, as major
educational implications. Most users, however, do not realize the cellphones potential for
education, nor even for
the education functions for which it was originally designed. This study describes the
experience of two major
projects that are studying the potential of cellphones techniques to formal and
informal education in the
Philippines and Magnolia. The studies have yielded positive reaction from students and
trainee about the potential
of this techniques, and are suggesting designed and logistical principles for use in
educational cell phone
implementation.

According to Manila Times (2015) on their research entitled after use of

mobile gadget students ability
to study and sleep. Stated that, excessive use of cellphones causes students to fare in
elementary, junior high
school and senior high school, not only it because it apparently compromises what they
have studied, researchers
say students who spend several hours each day staring into cellphone tend to change
their sleeping habits and
stay up late to use the devices, education ministry published last week showed. The
research was conducted from
the fifth grade of the primary school up to the third year of high school, 771 public
school and nationwide. It
showed for instance, that 53.5 % of Junior high school students who said they use a
mobile phone for more than
four hours a day to talk, send emails or surf the net, habitually do not get to sleep until
after midnight. The research
also found that over using cellphone can affect the quality of the student sleep. This lack
of sleep also affects the
school performance. The implies a lack of sleep or reduce a study time as a result of
mobile usage not the only
way these devices affects performance at school. The study revealed that students who
spend over two hours every
day, both studying and using apps, especially the popular lines scored worse on a math
exam than those who less
than thirty minutes a day studying but did not use a smartphone at all.

SYNTHESIS:
According to Libero on his research that smartphones now is most widely
medium in Asia as a major
educational implication. We believed on that because smartphones are everywhere and
it is a helpful gadget in
terms of education and gaining knowledge and information. But here in the town of Del
Gallego there are students
who did not have their own smartphones. So as a substitute, they go to computer shop to
rent for a computer to
do research for their assignments or projects. Manila Times stated on their research that
use of smartphones can
affect the sleeping habit and class performance of the students. It is true because if the
students are busy on using
smartphones at night, it is possible that they went late to bed. So, it may result for them to
be sleepy in school, so
that they could not be active in discussion that may result to their poor academic
performance but not just
smartphones are the cause of the late sleep of students. They may be watching
television or playing computer
games. So we believed that smartphones are not just bad cause unlike Manila Times
stated on their research.
CHAPTER III

Research Methods and Procedure

The chapter presents the method and procedure of research

and techniques of
Statistical and analysis of data will be used in this study.

Research Method

The researchers will use Descriptive Method in this study to the

total of 23 respondents.
This methodis will be use to the data into a simplest manner and give an adequete and
accurate interpretation
about the study.

Sample and Sampling Techniques

Defination: Random Sampling is a part of the sampling technique in which

sample has an equal
probability of being chosen. A sample chosen randomly is
meant to be unbiased
representation of the total population. If for some reason, no
representation, the variation is
called sampling error.

Defination: Random sampling is one of the simplest forms of collecting data from the
total population. Under
sampling, each number of the subset carriers an equal oppurtunity of being chosen as
a part of the sampling
process. For example, the total work force in organization is 300 and to conduct a
survey, a sample group of 30
employers is selected to do the survey. In this case, the population is the total
number of employers in the
company in the sample group of 30 employees is the sample. Each member of the
work force has an equal
oppurtunity of being chosen because all the employees who have been chosen to be
part of the survey will be
selected randomly. But, there is always a possibility that the group are sample does not
represent the population
as a whole in that case , any random variation is termed as a sampling error. An
unbiased random sampling is
important for drawing conclusion. Let us say when we look out of the sample from 30
employees from the total
population of 300 employees, there is any way a possibility that a researchers might end
up picking over 25 men even if the population consist of 200 men and women. Hence,
some variation when growing result can come up,
which is known as a sampling error. One of the disadvantages of the random sampling is
the fact that it requires
a complete list of population. For example, if a company wants to carry out a survey and
intends to deploy random
sampling, in that case, there should be the total number of employees and there is a
possibility that all employees
are spread across different region which make the process survey little difficult.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are the students from

Grade 12- Escoffier of
Del Gallego National High School with the total of 23.
The researchers will be characterized the subjects according
