According to Matchan (2015) on her narrative entitled, school seek balance for
smartphone in class. Are they a teacher tool or a distraction? Stated that, after 20 years
of teaching Mirriam Morgentenstern is calling it quits this month. The Lowell High
School history an ESL teacher is starting an educational non-profit, although that is not
the only reason she is leaving the classroom. Another is her frustration with students and
their smartphones. The texting, tweeting, and snapchatting during class times are “ an
incredible distraction, and makes it much more different to teach”, she said. “ It is pretty
hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video.” It is the most vexing issue of the
digital age for teachers and administrations: what to do about smartphone? Some
maintain that smartphones and other devices in school are crucial to being competitive in
a global market, while others insist that phones and tablets distracts students,
compromising their learning and focus. ‘ You will get kids saying, “I’ll look something
up for English, and while I’m here let me quickly check my Instagram or tweeter feed.”
And now they’re distracted and not really engaged with their lesson plan,” said Janisian a
Brainince psychologist and author of “celling your souls, no app for life,” about how
digital affects young people. A study released in could by the center for economic
performance at the London school at economic looked at 91 schools in four cities in
England, where more than 90% of teenager own a mobile phone. The study found that
Test scores were 6.41% higher at school where cellphone use is prohibited. The
researchers concluded that smartphones “ can have a negative impact on productivity
through distraction,” particularly among low achieving students who benefitted most
from that ban, with achieving students are more likely to be distracted by the presence of
smartphones while high achievers can focus in the classroom regardless of the mobile
phone policy,” according to the study.
Does the use of devices make it harder for other students to focus learning task?
More than 60% of a diversified studied cohort said it does, according to a recent survey.
However, 80% of that cohort reported using their cellphones at least once a period, with
75% saying that doing so was either acceptable or sometimes acceptable so, apparently
from the student perspective, we are not talking about a disruption they consider serious.
Perhaps that is because 92% of those in this survey did not believe that using their
phones and negative effects. Lots of points, but here’s the bottom line: I think we can
make the use of electronic devices more important than it merits. Yes it compromises
student learning and we have responsibility to make sure that students understand what
they are doing, but it is our job to present it.

According to a blog by the Wall Street Journal (2014) disclosed elementary school
students who answered that they never played video games on weekends answered 77%
of the questions correctly on a test of basic language skills, compared to 70.5% score
recorded by those who said played two to three hours. Students who said they spent
more than four hours a day playing games scored the lowest, getting only 64% of the
answer correct. Meanwhile in the Philippines, the Department of Education reiterated the
ban on the use of smartphones during class hours through its three orders, namely order
no. 83, series of 2003, order no. 26, series of 2001 and order no. 70, series of 1999.
1. Teach them the time spent on smartphone use on the one day should be added
2. Teach them to set their goals so they have the ability to plan what to do to
achieve them
SYNTHESIS:
According to Wall Street, student who spend using smartphone for four hours a
day got low scores in tests. It is similar on what Concio said, that students who are
regularly and fond of using their smartphones perform significantly worse on school
tests. We agreed on that because if a student is busy on using their smartphone, they did
not have time to review their lessons and can’t give more focus on studies because of the
distraction of smartphone.

Successful school program utilize digital devices in ways that keep kids engaged,
such as conducting polls
during civics lessons or searching for materials on a school library site. But in practice
,there can be big difference
between the efficacy of using school-issued laptops and tablets compared with
students own devices ,at least
among the older grades, according to the studies.
According to Book Blog(2015) on their research study entitled the use of mobile
devices in the college
classroom .Stated that ,walking around campus, cellphones are ubiquitos .What do
students with their cellphones
they walk into their classroom ? In one survey at sit different universities ,college
students responded using their
cellphones an average of 11 times per day in class In other study 92%of college
student reported using their
cellphones to send text message during class .Recently, a faculty member asked me
for advice about policies
regarding cellphones in mobile devices in class.Indeed, this is a hot topic and at
universities across the countries .
I was curious about the research basis regarding cellphone in class, so i do a bit reading.
I found a number of
studies examining mobile devices in the college classroom; not surprisingly ,the evidence
suggest that cellphones
generally are a distraction for students .Broadly we are not wired to multitask well, and
using cellphones during
class is no expectation .Several studies have compared students who texted frequently
took lower quality notes,
retained less information, and did worse is that mobile devices usage is disracting to
nearby students. In several
surveys, students have reported that texting is distracting to nearby students.
SYNTHESIS:
The foreign related studies are consisted of research thesis works, and studies of
persons and groups that
represented how cellular phone can help the academic performance of the students. It can
help the readers to be
aware on those kind of issue. According to Barrack which stated that there arelot of
students with an average of
95% who regularly use their smartphones during class hours .It is different on our beliefs
.Because if a student is
using their smartphones during class hours ,they could not focus on the class hours, they
could not focus on the
class discussion.

SYNTHESIS:
According to Libero on his research that smartphones now is most widely
medium in Asia as a major
educational implication. We believed on that because smartphones are everywhere and
it is a helpful gadget in
terms of education and gaining knowledge and information. But here in the town of Del
Gallego there are students
who did not have their own smartphones. So as a substitute, they go to computer shop to
rent for a computer to
do research for their assignments or projects. Manila Times stated on their research that
use of smartphones can
affect the sleeping habit and class performance of the students. It is true because if the
students are busy on using
smartphones at night, it is possible that they went late to bed. So, it may result for them to
be sleepy in school, so
that they could not be active in discussion that may result to their poor academic
performance but not just
smartphones are the cause of the late sleep of students. They may be watching
television or playing computer
games. So we believed that smartphones are not just bad cause unlike Manila Times
stated on their research.
CHAPTER III
Research Method
Defination: Random sampling is one of the simplest forms of collecting data from the
total population. Under
sampling, each number of the subset carriers an equal oppurtunity of being chosen as
a part of the sampling
process. For example, the total work force in organization is 300 and to conduct a
survey, a sample group of 30
employers is selected to do the survey. In this case, the population is the total
number of employers in the
company in the sample group of 30 employees is the sample. Each member of the
work force has an equal
oppurtunity of being chosen because all the employees who have been chosen to be
part of the survey will be
selected randomly. But, there is always a possibility that the group are sample does not
represent the population
as a whole in that case , any random variation is termed as a sampling error. An
unbiased random sampling is
important for drawing conclusion. Let us say when we look out of the sample from 30
employees from the total
population of 300 employees, there is any way a possibility that a researchers might end
up picking over 25 men even if the population consist of 200 men and women. Hence,
some variation when growing result can come up,
which is known as a sampling error. One of the disadvantages of the random sampling is
the fact that it requires
a complete list of population. For example, if a company wants to carry out a survey and
intends to deploy random
sampling, in that case, there should be the total number of employees and there is a
possibility that all employees
are spread across different region which make the process survey little difficult.
