RAC Control System Lab Experiment (1)

Ohm's Law

1- Aim: The purpose of this experiment is to verify Ohm’s Law using (Matlab/
Simulink).
2- Theory:
In metals and some other materials (in particular, commercially manufactured resistors), one
finds experimentally that the voltage drop (V) across the material is linearly proportional to
the current (I) through the material (provided the temperature remains relatively constant):
Vα I

which is referred to as Ohm’s Law. It is convenient to define a proportionality constant

called the resistance (unit: Ohm [Ω] = V/A) such that :- I = V/R.

3- Circuit Diagram:

Figure (1)
4- The Procedures:
1. Open Matlab ----> Simulink ---> New Model.
2. Connect the circuit diagram as shown in figure (1).
3. Set the value of the load at (R=2 Ω), Change the value of the input supply voltage (Vdc )
from (0V to 10V step2) and then determine the corresponding mean values of the circuit
current (I).
4. Chang the value of the load to (1 Ω) and (4 Ω), and then repeat point (4) above.
5. Substitute the dc supply voltage by an AC supply voltage.
6. Set the value of the input supply voltage (Vpeak) at (311.17 V, 50 Hz) and the load at
(R=20Ω), determine the corresponding (rms) and the (dc) values of the load voltage and
current.
7. Repeat step (6) at input supply voltage (Vpeak = 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300) Volt.

Superposition Theory

1. Aim: The purpose of this experiment is to verify superposition theory using (Matlab/
Simulink).
2. Theory:
The superposition principle states that the voltage across (or current through) an element in
a linear circuit is the algebraic sum of the voltages across (or currents through) that element
due to each independent source acting alone.

Steps to Apply Superposition Principle:

a. Turn off all independent sources except one source. Find the output (voltage or current) due
to that active source.
b. Repeat step 1 for each of the other independent sources.
c. Find the total contribution by adding algebraically all the contributions due to the
independent sources.
Note:
When we select one source at a time we turn all other sources to Zero by replacing :-
• Voltage sources with Short Circuit.
• Current Sources with Open Circuit.

3. Circuit Diagram:

Figure (2)
4. The Procedures:
1. Open Matlab ----> Simulink ---> New Model.
2. Connect the circuit diagram as shown in figure (2).
3. Set the parameters values: DC voltage source (50 V), DC current source (Controlled
Current Source) of (20 A) and three resistances (R1=5 Ω, R2=10 Ω, R3= 15 Ω).
4.
a. Run the circuit and record the value of the load current (ILoad).
b. Turn off the current source (replacing it by open circuit), run the circuit and then
record the value of the load current (ILoad).
c. Turn off the voltage source (replacing it by short circuit), run the circuit and then
record the value of the load current (ILoad).
5. Change the value of the DC voltage source from (0 V to 250 V step 50) and repeat step
(4).

5. The Report
1. Explain clearly the supersession theory.
2. For the circuit shown in figure (2), determine (theoretically) the value of the load
current (ILoad) for input DC voltage source of (50V, 100V and 200V).
3. For the circuit shown in figure (3), use the superposition theorem to find the value
of the load voltage (VLoad) and load current (ILoad).
