Lessons from Ants
Have you ever watched a very active colony of ants? You might wonder if the colony
has a leader. Ant colonies often look chaotic, but they actually accomplish tasks quite
efficiently. It turns out, there is no leader. Ant colonies function in a collective manner.
Scientists call this behavior “swarm intelligence.”
Using swarm intelligence, ants are able to find the quickest route to food sources and
defend their territory. Instead of one leader “telling” the others what to do, all of the
ants are constantly interacting with one another to make decisions.
Swarm intelligence is so impressive that researchers have started to study ants in order
to help businesses operate better. For example, an airline was having problems
efficiently moving cargo. Workers were spending too much time on unimportant tasks.
By studying how ants find the most efficient route to food, researchers were able to help
the airline figure out the best way to move cargo.
Scientists are currently studying bees, ants, and other social insects. It will be fascinating
to see what else we will learn from these tiny marvels.
