There had been a cultural miscommunication, however; the conversation had been for my ears only. This greatly upset my Japanese colleague, although she only let her close friend at the school know she was hurt. When | found out the next day that | had reported on a private conversation, | felt horrible. | immediately went to the office of the hurt colleague and apologized profusely. Even though she had been very unclear about the conversation being private, | shouldered all the blame. | was contrite, open and honest, and | explained why | had made the mistake before apologizing a second and even a third time. | wrote the ‘school's director a follow-up memo explaining that | had come to a quick judgment and been wrong in the last report. This didn't make me look good in the eyes of my employer, but | felt it was crucial to help my Japanese colleague save face. I'm convinced | never would have repaired my relationship with the hurt Japanese had | ignored the situation or put the blame ‘on her.
