CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AN ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Artists have a wide array of materials to use in order for them to create beautiful

and aesthetic artworks. Most of these artists have a mastery of one certain medium or material

that they always use and have become accustomed to the utilization of the material. Every artist

has their own preference in mediums.

These mediums can be classified into two types: the wet mediums and the dry

mediums. Wet mediums can consist of different paints such as water color, oil paint, poster

colors, etc. While dry mediums can consist of crayons, oil pastels, soft pastels, etc. As an artist,

the mediums you can use can be very crucial in the different artworks produced every day. It can

be very arguable deciding which type of medium is most preferred by artists. This is because of

the different pros and cons of each type. Wet mediums can be very time-efficient to use because

it can color a bigger surface in a matter of seconds; yet the cons of this type of medium is that

some of them can take a long time to dry and impatience can destroy an artwork. Dry mediums

on the other hand do not need to dry and can be applied directly onto the artwork without the use

of water, but this type of medium can eat up time and patience as it is harder to handle and can

only color small spaces at a time in order for the artworks to have a smooth and stroke-free

finish.

Mediums used in an artwork plays a vital role in making artworks, different artists

use different types. The preference of these artists can vary depending on the perceptions of the

users.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is very important for artists to identify what kind of medium they’re to use in a

certain artwork. Many factors can affect them ranging from time efficiency to the difficulty of

use of the certain material. However, preference can be an important factor in picking a medium

as it shows the mastery of that medium to the artist. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to

identify the preference of the type of medium artists use.

This study aims to answer the following question(s):

1. What is the preferred type of medium used by artists, dry mediums or wet

mediums?

2. How can preference of the two types of mediums affect the artist’ work?

3. What can be the advantages or disadvantages of having a certain bias to a

type of medium?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objective of this study is to know the respondent’s age, gender, and

preferences of art mediums. The researchers aim to discover which type of medium is commonly

used among artists and the reason as to why they prefer using this type of medium. Lastly, it is

determined to know how this type of medium is much preferred to be used among artists.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to know the preference of art mediums as perceived by the grade

12 media students of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA. It will serve as a guide in

able for them to know which type of medium is preferred to be used by artists. This may also

help identify which type of medium is commonly used among artists. This study hopes to make

contributions to the following:

Students

Students may benefit from this study by using it as a guide in understanding the

different mediums of art. It may help them understand artworks more and how these materials

are important in making artworks.

SCOPE AND DELIMINATIONS

This study focuses on the preference of types of mediums among artists as

perceived by grade 12 media students of UPHSD – Las Piñas Campus S.Y 2018-2019. The

coverage of the study is whether media students prefer to use wet mediums or dry mediums in

making their artworks. The study does not cover the technical of how these mediums are used or

how they are properly handled. This study only focuses on the preference of use of the students

on these two types of mediums.
