Resources:
• Canvas will be the primary location for all work associated with this course. This includes, but is not limited to,
assignments, discussions, and messaging. Additional resources will be available under Modules.
• https://www.quia.com/pages/tresorstemps.html - This page contains additional resources for each chapter of the text.

Course Schedule: This is a chronological asynchronous 18 week Spring Semester course, which begins on January 9,
2017. Discussions and assignments will be posted on Tuesdays and are to be completed by 11:59 PM EST the following
Monday.

Course Description:
Students will enhance their ability to communicate in French through the an overview History, Art, and Literature as it
relates to modern-day France. The concepts of cause and effect and revolution will be discussed thoroughly as well as
how the eras from Prehistory to the Napoleonic Wars created the foundation for France today. The exploration of the
culture of France will allow for a continual use of language and thus not only educate the student in a general overview of
France, but also enhance their ability to form and share their opinions within another language. By studying this course,
students will acquire a deeper appreciation for the culture and people of France.

Requirements:
• Students must have completed and maintained a minimum of 90% in French IV.
• Students must have internet access, flash player, and a working microphone and camera.

Rationale:
After the completion of French IV, students generally possess a grasp of the grammatical rules within the language itself.
By learning about France’s past perspectives, students can gain a greater appreciation for modern French culture,
language, and traditions. If a language is not practiced on a regular basis, the knowledge will slowly dissipate. Due to
scheduling conflicts, many schools are unable to offer a French V course. The online nature of this course will promote
the connectivity of learning a foreign language. This course creates a place for those wishing to continue their French, as
well as learn about the past, present, and future of a nation’s history.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the beginning of the history of France and the formation of the country.
2. Students will be able to identify a minimum of 5 pivotal figures during the Middle Ages and their importance to society.
3. Students will be able to recognize 3different types of historical French literature, examples of each, and how they
reflect the era and the people.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the causes and effects of the Renaissance, French Revolution, and
the Napoleonic Wars.
5. Students will be able to identify a minimum of 5 periods of art, an artist associated with each, and how art reflects the
era.
6. Students will be able to comprehend the concept of Revolution and adaptation as they apply to the French culture
7. Students will be be able to correlate history with modern day context to better understand how the progression of
events formulated the foundation for present day France.
2
8. Students will enhance their ability to communicate and comprehend French at an advanced level.

Related Standards:
All National Standards on the teaching of a foreign language apply to this course. These standards encompass Standard
1.1 - 5.2 in the areas of Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Community. For more information on
these standards, please access to the following website: http://www.actfl.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/public/
StandardsforFLLexecsumm_rev.pdf

Behavioral Expectations: We are building an online community. Not only will the class be learning historical content,
but the proper use of the French language. The only way to improve is by practicing in a positive environment.
Therefore, be respectful of others comments, perspectives and their use of French. Word Reference is the website to be
used to look up words and their meanings. Any word or short phrase that is newly discovered should be displayed in
italics. Any evidence of an online translator will be viewed as an act of plagiarism, and will receive consequences as
delegated by the Student Handbook. A copy of the Student Handbook can be viewed by accessing the following website:
http://tinyurl.com/z9jsbfp . Although this is an online course, all rules and regulations of Berks Catholic apply. Failure to
comply with the school policy will receive consequences as designated by the Student Handbook and administration. Any
student accommodations must be on file in the Main Office before they can be instilled.

Percentage Letter Grading: A point value system will be used for the grading of all assignments. The final
Grade grade will be the total points earned divided by the total points available. The Berks Catholic
grading scale is provided. The percentage will be assigned as such.
93-100 A • All assignments are to be completed in French, unless otherwise specified by the instructor.
• You are to record yourself speaking your written comments for all discussion posts.
85-92 B • Even though this is a history course, students will be expected to create grammatically
correct French work. 20% of all assignments will be graded for correct grammar.
75-84 C
• Any evidence of a translator is considered to be an act of plagiarism and will receive a zero.
70-74 D • Late assignments lose 10% of their point value for every day late.
• After one week, late assignments will no longer be accepted.
69 and lower F • All assignments submitted must include the title and the last name of the student
• Assignments may be submitted in the following formats: .pdf .doc .pages
