Technology International, Inc., which is located in
Waterford, Michigan, which covers the need of an
alarm to notify you if someone is entering or leaving
your store, (see photograph 1).
This product is bright red, is shaped like a stop
sign, and even has "STOP" in large white letters, and
in smaller letters, "EMERGENCY EXIT ONLY" with
the warning that an alarm sounds when the door is
opened. There is also a lock to turn off the alarm.
Though the STI-6400 is primarily an exit device,
it is also an excellent device to let the owner or clerk
know when someone has entered the store if the
owner or employee is in the back, or storage room,
thus keeping petty theft or not-so-petty theft down.
Some nice features about the STI-6400 in addition
to preventing unauthorized exits and entries through
emergency doors as well as alerting the store
personnel a customer has entered are:
• It is easy to install.

and magnet and when mounted these should not
have a gap of more than ¾” if on a wood door, or
3/8” if on a metal door and frame.
The simplest and quickest installation takes only
1 to 5 minutes though it is recommended you set up
the unit and test the settings prior to mounting.
To accomplish the most basic installation, first be
sure the key switch is in the “off” position.
Remove the tamper screw on the side of the unit
and remove the housing cover. As I said before,
save the tamper screw tool for future servicing and
battery changing.
Set the switches on the circuit board to the
desired alarm settings. Test the settings by
connecting the battery or other power source.
Mount the main unit on, or next to the door using
the hardware provided. The reed switch mounting 2. The inner workings of the 6400.
locations can be moved to one of four locations. If
mounted next to the door, route the reed switch wire
through the knock out in the bottom housing.
Mount the magnet on the door frame (or door
if the unit is mounted next to the door) using the
screws provided. If mounting on metal doors or
door frames, use the plastic spacer provided under
the reed switch and magnet. The Reed switch and
magnet must be within ¾” when the door is closed
(3/8” on a metal door and frame).
Replace the cover by sliding the flanges on the
inside of the cover into slots on the top of the base.
Then rotate the cover over the unit and snap it
closed. Replace the tamper screw.
As I said, this is the simplest installation and
can be accomplished in a matter of minutes and is
probably the manner in which many installations of

the STI-6400 will be accomplished.
However, I called Terry Vincent (who some of you
may recall is the fellow who invented Terry’s Strong
Guard™), and asked him if he had installed any type of
annunciator in his shop yet. As it turned out, he hadn’t.
You see, Terry has recently acquired some very
nice, but also very expensive items, so he can take
over the manufacturing of his Strong Guard rather
than have to send the work out.
This equipment is in the warehouse area of his
shop and he needs something to let him know when
someone enters his front locksmith shop area should
he be in the back manufacturing or electroplating
some latch guards.
I told him it shouldn’t take too long to install the STI-
6400 and we made an appointment for the next day.
Unfortunately, shortly after I turned up, Terry got

a call to run so we had to put off installing the STI-

6400 for a day or so. So I left it with him to look over
until we could get together to install it. I would soon
learn what a fellow teacher once told me: Be careful
who you ask to help you do something.
We were definitely not going to do the rather
simple and easy installation you have already seen.

The completed installation is seen in photograph
10. The transformer is plugged into the wall socket
close to the floor behind a sofa so it is not easily
noticed.
Just as in the simplest installation where two side
by side doors are connected to the same unit, but
will sound the alarm if either door is opened, you can
also run a wire to a remote door from the unit, such
as a side door or back door, so this one unit does the
work of two separate units.

battery or remote 12-24 VDC. Terry is holding
the reed switch wires that will be attached to the
terminal block in photograph 3.
Next we have determined where to attach the
reed switch, (see photograph 4).
A hole for running the wire from the reed switch
to the terminal is drilled in the metal frame header.
Another hole is drilled in the sheetrock wall above
the reed switch. This hole will sit behind the body
of the STI-6400. There will be no wire exposed for
someone to cut when the job is completed. Note: if
the wires are cut after installation the reed/magnet
contact will be broke and the alarm will trip.
