Introduce Lesson: First introduce the lesson from the textbook given, present the examples
given in the textbook on the whiteboard so that the students can have a visual presentation and
can annotate. While presenting an example with the students, ask what is the next step of finding
the GCD.
Example: (If you want me to teach using examples you need to provide me the examples.)
Intersection of Sets Method : Find the GCD of 20 and 32
D20= {1,2,4,5,10,20}
D32= {1,2,4,8,16,32}
The set of common divisors are {1,2,4}
The greatest number in the set of common divisors is 4; GCD (20,32)= 4.
12= 2*2*3
8= 2*2*2
The common divisor is 2^2 which is 4.
Lesson: (Since I am subbing in your class, instruct me on how you would like the concepts
taught, what concepts would you want me to stress, and provide me a worksheet? Or am I
having the students work on computer stations and if so provide a site that you wish for me to
direct them --- and the assessment tool I will be using. )
Introduce lesson by giving the definition of GCF. The Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) or the
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of two whole numbers a and b, not both 0, is the greatest whole
number that divides both a and b.
The Intersection of Sets Methods, we list all members if the set of whole number divisors of the
two numbers, then find the set of all common divisors and, at last pick the greatest number In
common of the set.
*use examples given*
The Prime Factorization Method is breaking down the number into their common primes. To find
the GCD of two or more nonzero whole numbers, first find the Prime Factorization of the given
numbers and then identify each common PRIME factor. The GCD is the product common prime
factors, each raised to the lowest power of that prime.
Re-Teach:
If other students don’t understand the Intersection of Sets method, introduce the
Venn Diagram to show a visual representation of common (related) divisors in
the middle of the diagram and the other elements that make up the number on
the rings that don’t intersect. Find the GCF of 24 and 40
If the students don’t understand the Prime Factorization method, break down the given
number into the Prime tree. Count every prime number. If Repeated prime numbers,
convert into powers .
