Standard VI Evaluation Report: Learner Centered Information Science and Librarianship

Principle 1: The librarian works collaboratively with other information professionals in support

of the library program, student achievement, and the profession, and understands the role of all

types of libraries in an integrated learning environment.

A. Acceptable

 The library collection is available through an online catalog, and remotely through

an online database. This includes access to the eBook collection which is

accessible through any device that has an internet connection.

B. Below Standard

 Unfortunately, the librarian does not promote a website for the campus library.

Although the district does have a page on the district site dedicated to all of the

libraries in the district, it only provides basic information such as who the

librarian is and contact methods.

C. Below Standard

 The librarian does not collaborate in order to provide continuing professional

development opportunities. I believe that part of this is due to the fact that the

librarian is in her first year and still trying to find her stride in the new position.

D. Below Standard
Mayes-Alvidrez 2

 The librarian is not at a high school campus and therefore does not collaborate

with institutions of high learning in order to provide high school students with

access to collections and services upon request.

E. Below Standard

 The librarian does not collaborate with various institutions that provide students

with educational opportunities. However, the librarian is currently working on

developing relationships for the next school year in order to bring representatives

on campus and take students to various institutions.

F. Acceptable

 The librarian has made efforts to collaborate with the children’s services librarian

at the public library. During the fall literacy night, the public librarian was invited

to come and talk to parents and provide them with information on how to get

library cards and the services that the public library offers. The librarian from the

public library will be returning in April for the Spring literacy night as well.

Principle 2: The librarian creates a school library program that is recognized as the central

element in the intellectual life of the school as evidenced by use of statistical measures to

evaluate and improve the program.

A. Acceptable

 The librarian is aware of what information literacy is and makes an effort to

include information literacy skills in her lesson plans. However, the librarian does

not collaborate with classroom teachers.

B. Below Standard
Mayes-Alvidrez 3

 The librarian is not involved in the district nor the site based decision making

committees.

C. Below Standard

 The librarian does not collect statistical data or evaluate the library program. The

librarian is unfamiliar with how to collect statistical data utilizing the Destiny

software. Although the librarian plans to evaluate the library program, she has not

done so as of yet.

D. Acceptable

 The librarian currently has a survey in order to collect feedback from staff on

materials that they would like to see in the library for the next school year and

what the staff would like to see happen next year that will improve the library.

The survey is electronic so that results will be easier to collect and analyze.

Principle 3: The librarian applies and implements the principles and concepts of collection

development: evaluation, selection, acquisition, and organization of information, and employs

standard bibliographic and retrieval techniques.

A. Acceptable

 The librarian follows the approved board selection policy and takes into

consideration the needs of the library users when selecting materials. However,

the librarian did not use collection mapping nor consult an advisory committee

when selecting materials.

B. Acceptable

 The collection in the library is filled with materials that are all less than ten years

old. The library is relatively new, and many new materials were purchased so

little weeding is required in terms of out dated materials. I rated this field as

acceptable due to the fact that the collection development plan is only one year.

C. Acceptable

 I rated this standard as acceptable. The librarian uses copy cataloging for almost

all materials in the library.

D. Below Standard

 The librarian does not use any cataloging software tools.

Principle 4: The librarian evaluates and selects existing and emergent technologies to support

the library program in coordination with the Texas Education Agency’s Long Range Plan for

Technology and the campus STaR Chart.

A. Below Standard

 The librarian has little to no input into the assessment of technology through the

campus STaR chart. The administration team along with the campus technology

representative take on this responsibility. Although the librarian is part of the

technology committee, the technology committee does not meet.

B. Below Standard

 The librarian does not participate in existing statewide information sharing

technology initiative.

C. Acceptable

 I rated this category as acceptable since the librarian takes teacher input into

consideration in making future purchases for the library. The librarian also has

participated in sales presentations on certain technologies that could be added to

the library. The technology department takes on the majority of the purchasing
Mayes-Alvidrez 5

however when it comes to adding technologies to the library as campus budgets

are often not large enough.

D. Below Standard

 The librarian often does not utilize technology during library time for student

centered learning. Although students so use computers for Accelerated Reader,

the limited amount of time that students have in the library often leaves little room

for the librarian to model effective use of technologies.

Principle 5: The librarian communicates effectively with students and staff to determine

information needs and applies knowledge of literature to guide development of independent

readers.

A. Below Standard

 The librarian does not collaborate with teachers on information needs related to

the curriculum. Although the librarian has requested lesson plans from teachers,

she has not been able to build relationships with all of the teachers.

B. Acceptable

 Although the librarian has not been able to collaborate well with many of the

teachers, there are some teachers that she has built a relationship with in the 3rd

and 4th grade. When those teachers make requests, the librarian fulfills them.

C. Below Standard

 The librarian does not assist students and staff with a research process.

D. Acceptable
Mayes-Alvidrez 6

 The librarian does assist students with a search strategy to locate materials and

resources. However, this is an area that can greatly be approved upon as students

often struggle locating materials.

E. Acceptable

 The librarian does relate reading to students’ interest. The librarian has begun

integrating music and literacy which gets the students engaged. The librarian also

integrates reading challenges to catch students’ interests such as the recent “Can

You Find the Cat in the Hat” challenge during read across America week. I rated

this area as acceptable because the librarian often uses stories and does not vary

the genres enough.

F. Below Standard

 The librarian does not utilize the interlibrary loan system. The students uses only

the collection available through Adams’s OPAC.

G. Acceptable

 The librarian does make an effort to improve reading scores and literacy through

helping to create excitement about reading through reading challenges, literacy

nights, book fairs, and reading parties.

Principle 6: The librarian demonstrates ethical behavior in all professional contexts and

promotes the principles of intellectual freedom, information access, privacy, and proprietary

rights.

A. Acceptable
Mayes-Alvidrez 7

 Although the librarian does not follow all the policies regarding copyright, she

does maintain all other rights pertaining to patrons’ rights and intellectual

freedom.

B. Recognized

 The librarian maintains the principles of intellectual freedom.

C. Acceptable

 The librarian maintains the confidentiality of patrons’ records.

Principle 7: The librarian engages in continuous self-evaluation and self-directed learning for

professional growth by participating and contributing to professional associations and

publications.

A. Acceptable

 The librarian uses library standards to assess the program and determine areas of

improvement. However, she does not take into consideration curriculum

standards.

B. Below Standard

 The librarian does not participate in any local, state, nor national associations.

However, she is making an effort to see if funding is available to go the Texas

Library Association Annual Conference.

C. Acceptable

 The librarian keeps up with library trends through at least one scholarly journal.

D. Acceptable

 The librarian participates in LM_NET.

E. Below Standard
Mayes-Alvidrez 8

currently trying to see if funds are available to attend the Texas Library

Association annual conference.
