system configuration.

AAA Server
Introduction Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) server is
main functional entity that performs major functions related to
subscriber’s billing details.
Functions AAA Server functions are as follows:
„ Authentication

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 1

ZXMBW AAA AAA Server Billing

„ Authorization
„ Accounting
„ Original Bill Generation
„ FTP Bill Generation

Bill Generation
AAA Server functions are used to generate the bills, a brief
introduction about the bill generation is explained below.
AGW keeps the subscriber message and sends the UDR to AAA
Server. AAA Server saves the UDR into database and then
generates the bill after some time.
AAA sends a billing response message to AGW as it receives and
verifies details about the message. AAA keeps this billing
message in the temporary bill list. After a certain cycle, AAA
generates the original bill and FTP bill and the accounting system
collects all bills from FTP directory of the AAA Server. The
original bill is stored as a bill.
Interval for AAA to generate Usage Data Records (UDRs) and the
FTP billing files is 300 to 1800 seconds, with 300 seconds as the
default setting.

Billing System
Introduction In ZXMBW system, there is no specific node for billing server
and services are charged by AAA Server.
Structure Billing system structure is shown in Figure 1.

Chapter 1 Billing System

Description Brief introduction of each functional entity in billing system is as

follows:
AAA Server
AAA receives RADIUS billing messages from AGW and sends
acknowledgement messages back to AGW after verification of
the received messages. AAA will store the billing messages into
temporary CDR and generates original bills, FTP bills and save to
local disk after a certain period of time (predefined).
AAA provides FTP interface for billing center and accounting
interface for accounting system as well.
Billing Center
Billing center regularly avails FTP interface provided by AAA and
collects original billing information from AAA for pricing and
settlement so that the final CDR can be generated.
Accounting System
When services are handled in business hall, integrated business
system sends connection request to AAA via accounting interface
furnished by AAA. AAA executes corresponding operations as per
the command and return operational results to accounting
system to finalize operator’s service handling.
Interfaces Interface between AAA and billing center is FTP interface and
between accounting system is accounting interface (Database
Input & Output (DBIO) interface) as shown in Figure 2.

Notes „ Property of RFC2138 and RFC2139 in Table 8 is “26/* (* is

non-zero)”, which is specially defined by the manufacturer
and used for transmitting 3GPP2 parameters. The default
value (IANA) of Vendor ID in “Vendor Specific” property
should be 5535. Vendor ID 5535 enables cdma2000 data
service to roam globally. It is omitted in Table 8. The symbol
“*” represents the property type defined by the
manufacturer.
„ Fields of additional billing record part in Table 8 have no type
value defined by 3GPP2 standard. It is defined by the
manufacturer and the value is 26/0.

Bill Format
Introduction An original file adopts ASCII text format. Properties for each Bill
are arranged in sequence. Properties are separated by ‘\t”. At
time of generating Bill record if any corresponding property is
empty, use ‘\t’ to separate directly without any characters
between next property.
One row in a file is a billing record. Billing records are separated
by line feed characters and written in sequence in the Bill. The
file length is not fixed.
Record items of each billing record are corresponding with
properties of billing formats. The definition, format and length of
each property should meet the specification of billing format.

Glossary

3G 3G refers to next generation of mobile communication systems.

These offer enhanced services, such as multimedia and video.
Main 3G technologies include UMTS and cdma2000.
3GPP 3GPP was formed in December 1998 as a collaboration
agreement bringing together a number of telecommunication
standards bodies. These standards bodies are referred to as
Organizational Partners. Aim of 3GPP was to produce globally
applicable technical specifications for third generation mobile
systems based on evolved GSM Core Networks and the radio
access technology Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRAN).
3GPP2 3GPP2 is a sister project to 3GPP and is a collaboration
agreement regarding third generation mobile networks. It is
comprised of five Standards Development Organizations similar
to Organizational Partners in 3GPP. 3GPP2 mainly deals with the
following five areas: A-interface system, CDMA2000, American
National Standards Institute-41 (ANSI-41), wireless packet data
inter-working, and services & systems aspects.
AAA It is a system, which is implemented to securely determine the
identity and privileges of a user and to track that user's activities.
FA A Foreign Agent (FA) is a node in a Mobile IP (MIP) network that
enables roamed IP users to register on the foreign network. The
FA will communicate with the Home Agent (HA) to enable IP
datagram’s to be transferred between the home IP network and
the roamed IP user on the foreign network.
FTP A client server application protocol using well known ports 20
and 21. It uses the services of Transmission Control Protocol
(TCP) to provide reliability in the transfer of data files between
network nodes. FTP was first defined as a standard in Request
for Comments (RFC 959).
Home Access Home cdma2000 cellular network of the mobile subscribed users.
Provision For the data service, a user can have different home networks.
Network

Home IP Home network providing the user with IP-based data services,
Network serving as the route home network of user NAI. This network
can be enterprise private network, public ISP access network or
cdma2000 network.
Intermediate Intermediate AAA, located in an intermediate network, is in
AAA security relationships with the service AAA and home AAA. It is
used to safely transmit AAA messages between the service AAA
and home AAA. In some cases, there may be more than one
intermediate AAA between the service AAA and the home AAA.

Intermediate The management domain networking containing the

AAA Network intermediate AAA.
Packet Data The packet switching data service provided by cdma2000
Service network for the mobile user.
Packet Data One service option provides one method. It is used for setting up
Service Option and maintaining cdma2000 service channel used by the packet
data services between MS and radio network.
Packet Data An instance in which the user continuously uses the packet data
Session service. A packet data session starts when the user activates the
packet data service and ends when the user/network terminates
the packet data service. During a specific packet data session,
the user can change the position with the same IP address.
PPP Session A specific PPP connection instance maintained between MS and
AGW. PPP session is held when the MS is in dormant status.
When the user has inter-RN handoff, AGW keeps unchanged, so
PPP session keeps unchanged. If AGW changes, a new PPP
session is set up for the user at the target AGW side.
Radio Network In the network reference model, RN is equal to the BS. In this
file, terms PCF and RN are the same, in the description of the R-
P interface handoff.
Service cdma2000 network operated by the home service supplier or
Provision visiting service supplier. The relationship between home service
Network supplier and user is commercial customer relationship. The
visiting service supplier and home service supplier makes service
agreement to provide the visitor user with access service.
Visiting Access cdma2000 cellular network providing roaming user with access
Provision service.
Network

Visitor AAA AAA server resident on the visiting access provision network.
