Correlation between SCC susceptibility and the rust layer
The susceptibility to SCC and electrochemical corrosion of steel is related to the
change in the structure of the rust layer and the composition of the reactants underneath. The main reason is that the differences in the types and distribution of the corrosion products, as well as the aggressive species in the environment, affect the electrochemical properties. As shown in Figs. 3a and b, the rust layer clearly affected the electrochemical properties of the material. The formation of rust layers on the surface of the E690 steel suppressed the anodic current, and the reduction of -FeOOH increased the cathodic current. The increase in the cathodic current enhances the hydrogen evolution reaction during the cathode process on the material surface, contributing to the increase in HE susceptibility. Moreover, the corrosion products induced a tensile stress at the interface between the rust and the metallic matrix, which promoted the initiation and propagation of SCC. EDS inspection showed that the chloride was enriched in the inner layer and Cr was enriched in the middle layer. Cr is well known to be effective at improving the anti-corrosion performance of steels. The enrichment of Cr led to a higher compactness of the rust, inhibiting the diffusion of reactants, which led to a reduction in icorr during the latter stage. However, the formation of a thick and dense rust scale brings about anon-uniform distribution of the corrosive medium and its mass transfer processes, which causes pitting and results in SCC initiating from the localized anodic active area. It is reasonably assumed that at the harsh and tropical ocean site, chloride ions penetrated the rust layer and were abundantly enriched in the inner rust layer. The enrichment of chloride ions promoted the formation of -FeOOH and induced the acidification of the material surface. This phenomenon also accelerated both the hydrogen evolution and localized dissolution, as discussed in the previous section, and promoted SCC by a combination mechanism of HE and AD. In summary, the rust layer plays a significant role in generating an aggressive environment in the sublayer for the nucleation and growth of SCC, involving both the localized anodic dissolution and hydrogen evolution processes.
5 Conclusions
Based on electrochemical technologies, SCC testing and various corrosion behavior
characterization techniques, an accelerated SCC experimental method using a wet-dry cyclic marine environment were developed. The results showed that E690 high strength steel was highly at risk from SCC in wet-dry cyclic offshore environments. The SCC follows a combined mechanism of AD and HE, which nucleates in pits under the rust layer and tends to propagate transgranularly along bainite slices. Cracks grow at quite a low propagation rate during the early stage and expand at a far faster rate when the crack size exceeds a critical value. Both the electrochemical and SCC behaviors of the E690 steel in wet-dry cyclic environments were influenced by the rust layer. Chloride ions can penetrate the rust layer and become enriched in the sublayer, accelerating the localized anodic dissolution. The formation of a rust layer also induces localized acidification and hydrogen evolution at the metal/rust layer interface. These two effects are the responsible mechanisms for the SCC.
