As Pakistanis have never gotten rid of helping each

other out in any way. Under the supervision of their


teachers, a group of medical students started a
project HELP for needy communities in the rural
areas of Karachi, to provide them by primary health
care at their doorsteps with a special treatment on
immunization.

PRIMARY
HEALTH CARE
(PHC)
CENTRES:
HELP has three
PHC centres one
each at Neelam
Colony, Khuda Ki
Basti, and Lower Gizri in Karachi. These centres
provide primary health care facilities including
antenatal and post natal checkups, treatment of
common illnesses, immunization of children under 5
and women of reproductive ages, health education
and growth monitoring of children. These centres
have linkages with Government operated secondary
and tertiary health care facilities. Patients in need of
referral are sent to these facilities.

HEALTH EDUCATION AND LITERACY


PROGRAMME

HELP is a non-
government, Community
Based Primary Health
Care and Education
Programme working in
various Katchi Abadies of
Karachi and Sanghar and has tax exemption status.
HELP comprises of professionals including doctors,
social workers, chartered accountants, and lawyers,
committed to the development of Primary Health
Care.
MISSION

health delivery and education for women and
children”
HOME SCHOOLS
With the financial assistance of UNWG, HELP
opened 3 home schools in Ghaggar located in Bin
Qasim town, Karachi. Each Home school is catering
to 20 girls aged 7 to 14 years. These girls had never
been to the schools before.
TRAININGS:
HELP's Nutrition Institute
has been involved in
training on of government
and non-government
health workers. HELP has
also conducted trainings
for the HCP of Agha Khan
Health Services Pakistan. It has conducted trainings
of Government Health care workers in collaboration
with UNICEF, WFP and WHO. Trainings have been
conducted for HELP's own staff including doctors,
LHVs, LHW's, Nutrition Counselors, Health Workers
and Social Mobilizers.
Recently HELP Conducted trainings for:
HCP of Merlin on management of stabilization
centre.
Community workers of TRDP in District Tharparkar
on integrating Nutrition and WASH.
Community workers of BRAC Pakistan in Shireen
Jinnah Colony, Karachi on Primary Health Care.
HCP of Pakistan Rangers, Sadhao region, District
Sanghar on identification of malnourished children.

Very shortly trainings will be offered as short and


medium courses of two weeks to four weeks. These
will cater to paramedics and nurses. These courses
will include training for breastfeeding skills,
complimentary feeding demonstrations and
community mobilization for nutrition, community
based management of malnutrition.
Health Education

Health education is provided through women


support groups and at MCH Centres. Every year
approximately 67,527 women and household care
takers are provided health education through
community health workers.
Nutri-HELP”- High Density Diet (HDD)
A specially formulated high density diet has been
developed by HELP for the treatment of moderate
to severely malnourished children under five years
of age.
In an attempt to rehabilitate severely wasted
children ("3" SD) in their home environment HELP
carried out a pilot intervention study in one of its
communities, Khuda Ki Basti. Identified severely
malnourished children were rehabilitated through
counseling and giving High Density Diet(HDD).
Success of the project is reflected by improvement
in weight of these children from ("-3STD"), in a span
of 3 months. The study has been published in JPMA
(Feb 2010) JPMA.Org.Pk Results of this study
encouraged HELP to replicate its methodology in
other parts of the province with high malnutrition
rates.
“Nutri-HELP” has been successfully used in “Mother
and Child Friendly Community” in Nagarparkar,
District Tharparkar (in collaboration with GAVI) and
a ‘Home –Based Nutrition Rehabilitation’ project in
Shahdadpur District Sanghar (Funded by World
Bank)
