MYQUEST
COLLEGES have a crucial role to play
when it comes to helping students build
careers. The resources, lecturers,
management systems and exposure in
college are important aspects in grooming
students into skilful and confident graduates
who are ready to begin their career
journeys.
The Higher Education Ministry developed
the Malaysian Quality Evaluation System for
Private Colleges (MyQuest) in 2010. Results
are released biennially, with the latest
ratings published in December last year for
the 2016/2017 period.
More commonly known as MyQuest, the
system generates three evaluation reports,
which are:
l College-based evaluation report
l Cluster-based evaluation report
l International student services
evaluation report
The system rates private Malaysian
colleges not only on overall performance,
but their various academic clusters as
well.
This means that in addition to having a
simple list of top colleges in the country,
school-leavers and prospective college
students can now easily recognise the best
colleges in a particular stream, course or
discipline.
These clusters, along with the number of
colleges rated 6 Stars in each one, are listed
in the table.
While the first two categories of
evaluation focus on the quality of
education provided in private colleges,
the international student services category
is a unique concept that assesses the
preparedness of private colleges in
recruiting and handling international
students.
In addition to common evaluation criteria,
aspects considered in the report include
areas pertaining to security and safety, hostel
facilities and quality of management
systems.
This is to ensure that the college is fit to
accept international students and give them
the best possible exposure to tertiary
education in Malaysia.

The rating process
The MyQuest rates colleges by allocating
one to six stars based on the colleges’
performance. Below is a breakdown of the
ratings.
l 6 Stars – Outstanding
l 5 Stars – Excellent
l 4 Stars – Very good
l 3 Stars – Good
l 2 Stars – Satisfactory
l 1 Star – Poor

The evaluation process is carried out in
two steps. The first step requires each
private college to conduct a self-evaluation
and declare its practices on a web-based
MyQuest form. The responses given in
relation to the various performance
indicators will then be automatically
scored.
The second step involves evaluation by
auditors assigned by the Higher Education
Ministry, who verify the information
provided by the colleges in their self-
intelligence, technology design and
programming.
“At SEGi, we inspire not only school-

need to update, upskill and upgrade
themselves so that they can enhance their
value contribution capacities and
productivity in their respective workplaces,”

Auditors may decide to add or deduct
points from a college’s self-awarded score
once they have thoroughly examined the
supporting evidence provided by the college.
It is only upon the completion of this second
step that the scores are finalised and
released.
The evaluation system, along with its
indicators and benchmarks, is made
transparent for all participating colleges so
that they may work towards achieving the
best scores.

Lumpur was rated 5 Stars.
MyQuest is aimed at driving
improvements in quality through
developmental approaches, ratings and
self-assessments. It is also a part of the
objective of an education-centred National
Key Results Area.
Other recognitions SEGi has received
include a bronze award in the Education
and Learning category at the Putra
Brand Awards 2017, and five stars in
the teaching, facilities, inclusiveness
and social responsibility categories with
three stars overall in the QS Stars University

The results
The MyQuest 2016/2017 ratings marked
quite an improvement over the 2014/2015
set, proving that the rating system can be
considered a measure of success.
By promoting healthy competition among
private colleges through MyQuest, the
Higher Education Ministry’s system is
benefiting not only school-leavers by
advising them on the quality of private
colleges in Malaysia, but participating
private colleges as well because with their
ratings, they can be better positioned to
attract more students.
Malaysia is striving to become one of
the most sought-after education hubs
in the region, and the introduction of
MyQuest is certainly a step in the right
direction.

WITH Malaysia striving to be a regional
education hub, the Higher Education
Ministry included a category for
international student services in the
Malaysian Quality Evaluation System for
Private Colleges (MyQuest) ratings.
This is to ensure that private colleges in
the country are well prepared to recruit
international students and offer them the
best of tertiary education.
The rating system takes into account
quality of management systems, safety and
security features and campus facilities that
colleges have in place to accommodate
foreign students.
