salvage program. Every effort has been made to provide the most current and relevant information known to Caterpillar Inc. Since the

The purpose of this booklet is to give visual guidelines for the reuse of transmission clutch disc assemblies with F37 and F37X Clutch Friction
Material and their mating clutch plates.

Never install a part that this booklet shows cannot be used again.

Normally, the surfaces that are in contact with the F37 and F37X Clutch Friction Material will be in good condition even after many hours of
operation. If they are not scratched, smeared, discolored, warped, or dished, they can be used again with no reconditioning. Procedures to
recondition scratched, smeared, or lightly pitted reaction surfaces are given in this booklet. Also, specifications for the maximum amount of
warp and dish are given. Do not use any other method of cleaning or reconditioning. Do not machine with a lathe, clean with grit or glass
beads, or use abrasive reconditioning pads. Any method that changes the surface finish of the reaction surfaces can cause rapid wear of the
friction material.

During reconditioning, correct any conditions that caused the original failure.

Arkansas Stone: A natural stone of very fine grit used to sharpen precision instruments and to polish metal.

Chipped: When referring to disc assemblies, this is the condition in which areas of friction material are broken off.

F37 and F37X Clutch Friction Material on disc assemblies is very dark gray or black and looks like rubber.
Thumbnail pressure held for several seconds will make a shallow dent in the surface. The dent will soon

Cleaning Friction Material

Follow these precautions:

Glazed And Smeared Friction Material

Glazing and smearing can result from heat generated from excessive slippage. The heat causes the friction material to harden and lose its
frictional characteristics. The material changes that occur make it impossible to salvage glazed discs.

lands. The area of the gouge cannot be more than the area of one land in a segment.

Measurement Of Face Wear And Disc Thickness Excessively worn disc faces can cause two types of problems:

Use a micrometer to measure the thickness at several places around the inner and outer edges of the disc. Do Not Reuse a disc that has any
measurement below the minimum thickness shown in Table 1.
1New disc tolerance is ±0.08 mm (0.003 inch)

Note: Part Number 5P-8557 Transmission Disc Gauge can be used to check minimum thickness for any disc with an original thickness of 4.95
mm (0.195 inch) or 5.59 mm (0.220 inch). Check three locations at the outside and three locations at the inside of the disc assembly. If the
disc assembly will enter the slot of the gauge at any of the locations, the disc assembly is too thin and cannot be used again.

limits except the slot maximum "radial indent" limit, the plate can be
turned over and used again. The reused plate must be used in the same
clutch and in the same application.

Scratched Clutch Plates

Remueve alguna inscrustacion con cuidado frotando el area con una piedra 6V-2010 o con 2/0
papel emery y un solvente. Hacer esto hasta que la inscrustacion no pueda ser sentida con la

Remove any sharp edges caused by scratches or nicks by carefully rubbing only the area of the sharp edge with a 6V-2010 Stone or with 2/0
emery paper and a solvent. Do this until the sharp edge cannot be felt with a fingernail or lead pencil. Put oil on the plate or surface to
prevent rust.

Inspect and reuse pistons and other reaction faces in accordance with SEBF8014, �Identification and Applications of
Transmission Clutch Plates and Specifications to Machine Reaction Faces for Power Shift Transmissions�.

Smeared Reaction Surfaces

All the F37 and F37X friction material on a smeared clutch plate or other surface must be removed by a solvent before the plate or other
surface is used again. Duro "Naval Jelly" sold by Woodhill Chemical Sales Corp., Division of Loctite Corp., or an equivalent solvent, will
remove the friction material if the surface is not badly smeared. For badly smeared surfaces, use methyl ethyl ketone. The solvent is to be
used at a temperature of 16°C-27°C (50°F-80°F). Remove the solvent and put oil on the surface.

Wear rubber gloves to use any of the solvents and do not allow the solvent to contact the skin. Do not breathe the vapors of the solvent. Do
not use any solvents in a closed room. Keep the solvent away from flames or heat. See the instructions which are given on the solvent


Avoid contact of the solvent with the friction material of a disc assembly. Use only the procedures shown in the topics "Scratched Clutch
Plates" and "Smeared Reaction Surfaces". Any other method can cause rapid wear of the disc assemblies.

inch) that is less than the maximum. This difference between the measurement of gap (A) and gap (B) is 0.18 mm (0.007 inch) that is more
than the maximum. This example clutch plate cannot be used again.
