FAKULTI KEJURUTERAAN AWAM LABORATORY MANUAL SEMESTER

UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA, PULAU PINANG (LEVEL 3) SEP 17 – JAN 18

COURSE CODE : CEW 431

COURSE : FLUID MECHANICS AND HYDRAULICS LABORATORY
LEVEL OF OPENNESS : 3
CATEGORY : FULLY OPEN
DEGREE OF OPEN ENDED (%) : 100 %
PERIOD ACTIVITY : 2 WEEKS
3.1 : DETERMINATION OF HYDRAULIC PARAMETERS IN
EXPERIMENT NAME : NON-UNIFORM FLOW FOR OPEN CHANNELS (BROAD
CRESTED WEIR)

INTRODUCTION

Broad crested weirs are robust structures that are generally constructed from reinforced
concrete and which usually span the full width of the channel. They are used to measure the
discharge of rivers, and are much more suited for this purpose than the relatively flimsy sharp
crested weirs. Additionally, by virtue of being a critical depth meter, the broad crested weir
has the advantage that it operates effectively with higher downstream water levels than a
sharp crested weir.

OBJECTIVES
PREAMBLE
i. To examine the flow profile of water flows over broad crested weir.
ii. To determine the discharge coefficient for broad crested weir.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the experiment, students should be able to

i. investigate the occurrence of non-uniform flow in an open channel.
ii. demonstrate and perform the work independently or as a team in carrying out
experiment.
iii. organize and conduct the tasks by using appropriate equipment.

Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM Pulau Pinang is appointed by Drainage and Irrigation
Department (DID) to construct a physical scale model of broad crested weir for the
investigation of flow measurement in a natural channel. Your group is engaged to design the
TASK
experiment and conduct the experiment to investigate the changes of the state of flow under
different flow conditions/rates and determine the discharge coefficient for the scale model.

DATA INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS

The report must include:

REPORT 1. An introduction of the theoretical background regarding the fundamental knowledge of
the experiment.
2. Detailed descriptions of the procedures/methods and photo of conducting the laboratory
works are also needed.
3. All readings and data from the experiment should be converted to appropriate units and
tabulated accordingly.
4. Sample calculation/interpretation of data/plot of graph.
