INTRODUCTION
Broad crested weirs are robust structures that are generally constructed from reinforced
concrete and which usually span the full width of the channel. They are used to measure the
discharge of rivers, and are much more suited for this purpose than the relatively flimsy sharp
crested weirs. Additionally, by virtue of being a critical depth meter, the broad crested weir
has the advantage that it operates effectively with higher downstream water levels than a
sharp crested weir.
OBJECTIVES
PREAMBLE
i. To examine the flow profile of water flows over broad crested weir.
ii. To determine the discharge coefficient for broad crested weir.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM Pulau Pinang is appointed by Drainage and Irrigation
Department (DID) to construct a physical scale model of broad crested weir for the
investigation of flow measurement in a natural channel. Your group is engaged to design the
TASK
experiment and conduct the experiment to investigate the changes of the state of flow under
different flow conditions/rates and determine the discharge coefficient for the scale model.
REPORT
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
1. Discuss the results and graph plotted from your data analysis.
2. Conclude your findings in the experiment.
