Competency 5
5.1 Identify policy at the local, state, and federal level that impacts well-being,
service delivery, and access to social services.

● All of the families in the shelter are under McKinney- Vento which is a
program that provides money to homeless shelter programs.
● Offer seminars that educate families on their rights under McKinney- Vento so
that no one will take advantage of them.
● Be aware of any local policies that affect the homeless population.
● Homeless children are entitled to be enrolled in school and receive free lunch.
Competency 5
5.2 Assess how social welfare and economic policies impact the delivery of and
access to social services.

● Some families do not have the necessary documentation such as social


security numbers, birth certificates, or proof of residence.
● Many people do not meet certain eligibility qualifications in order to access
programs such as TANF and SNAP.
● Affordable housing options are more likely to be found in neighborhoods with
crime, poverty, and violence.
● Families w/ history of eviction or run ins with the law less likely to find
housing.
Competency 5
5.3 Apply critical thinking to analyze, formulate, and advocate for policies that
advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice.

● Attend meetings and town halls and advocate for homeless families
● Have a vast understanding of policies that impact target population, and figure
out what parts of that policy are negatively impacting them.
● Write congress representatives and demand that they take action.
● Create policies that will be beneficial for the population. Consider what is
currently not working and WHY
