A month or so ago, at the National
Convention in Dallas, I took over the position
of Vice President of Student Services. When I
originally decided that I would like to run for
this position, I was not quite sure what the
job entailed. One day, I sat down with Gina
Grosso, my best friend, as well as the person
holding the job at the time, and asked her what
taking on this position really meant. What she
told me really threw me for a loop because it
seemed like a very big task. She said that the
job of the Vice President of Student Services
was to bring chapters across the nation
together. To me, this was baffling because I
didn’t know how it was possible to accomplish
this.
In my public relations class, I learned a lot
about the different forms of social media and
how they really are the future. This includes
Facebook, Twitter, blogs, Myspace, Youtube,
etc. These websites are forums for people all
over the world to come together and I thought
that this would be the perfect way to connect

At the convention, a lot of students were
saying that it would be great if there was
something distributed to the members
that would give advice for fundraising or
information about the organization in general.
As one of the producers of this newsletter,
Signals Online, I immediately stated that we
include all of that information here. Most
students had no idea it existed. Most students
don’t spend their time browsing the NBS
website for updates but they do spend time on
Facebook, Twitter, and blogs. I figured that if
we were to include some of the information
and articles from Signals in a blog and link it to
Facebook and Twitter, it might make students
read it. They could also leave comments,
questions, or concerns directly below the
articles.
Social media really is the future and now
NBS is a part of it all. If you would like to view
the Twitter, just search NBSAERho, and if
you would like to view the blog, just visit the
Facebook because it is linked there. Happy
tweeting, blogging and Facebooking!

Congratulations to all the NEW AERho
Members announced and recognized in Dallas.
This is not an easy accomplishment but you
did it. And yes, you have arrived!!! Now use
the discipline you developed in achieving this
status to grow and maintain your knowledge
and skills to carry you into your future career.
Also, may I suggest you try mentoring a
friend or another NBS member and help them
achieve AERho qualification status.
For the rest of us, it is time to redouble our
efforts to strive for entry into AERho. It is
the honor society of our chosen career path
and therefore we should look to learn as much
as possible and underscore our efforts with
an invitation to a society which trumpets our
How do we do this? Talk with your faculty
advisor and make a plan for next year. Look
at the NBS web site and see what it will take
for you to qualify. Talk with a few of your
professors and discuss the best approach for
you. Volunteer for extracurricular activities
which will help you better develop your skills
and knowledge. This helps both in and out
of class. Most importantly, don’t lose that
enthusiasm you gained at the convention. Use
it to your advantage and let it carry you into
next year’s convention.

What To Do
After Dallas

Greetings from the East Coast! I really
enjoyed meeting so many of you in Dallas this
year.
Make sure to tell your Dean and Department
Chair about any awards your chapter won.
I’m sure they would love to hear about your
experiences in Dallas and I know that they
would be very happy to brag about your
awards to prospective students, alumni and
donors. Winning any type of awards at the NBS
National Convention can become a point of
pride for your school and department, so don’t
forget to tell them about what your chapter has
achieved.
If your chapter has a Facebook page or a
blog make sure to post a bulletin about this
year’s convention. It’s a great way for members
of your chapter and your online community
to find out exactly what happened at the
convention. Try to include so pictures so that
everyone can see how much fun we all had in
Dallas! If you school or department has a web
site make sure to post the same information
you posted on your Facebook page or blog on
their site. It’s a great to make sure that you
cover all of the bases and will help to sure
ensure that information gets out to your whole
school.
Don’t forget to send thank you notes or
thank you emails to everyone who helped you
get to Dallas this year. Let them know how
rewarding attending this year’s convention was
for you. You should also tell them about any
awards or honors your chapter earned at the
convention. Doing this will let your sponsors
and supporters know how meaningful this
experience was for you and may make them
inclined to help you and your chapter again in
the future.
Have members of your chapter who attended
our convention this year make presentations
at future meetings about their trip. This could
help inspire other members of your chapter
to attend future conventions. It’s time to start
planning for next year’s convention. Take the
energy and enthusiasm you had in Dallas and
bring it back to your chapter. Use it as a tool to
help motivate and inspire your chapter to start
planning for next year!

The biggest lesson I took away from Dallas
didn’t deal with winning, though my chapter at
Millersville University managed to win awards
in four categories and earn Chapter of the
Year. What I learned most at the convention
was how in love I am with broadcasting. The
keynote speaker the first night, Glen Cerny,
spoke about passion and love of the business.
It is no joke. In order to succeed in this field,
you need to truly desire it.
Many words and tips were thrown at me
again and again during the sessions. Some
of those success tips were internships, broad-
ranged, diversity, versatility, and the web.
While all of those are fine and dandy, one
particular quote stood out to me the entire
convention. During the career focus session,
Bob Michaels, President of Media Sense, said
to me “Living is more important than making a
living”. I take this to me you absolutely have to
love what you’re doing in this crazy business in
order to truly succeed.

Building
Your
Chapter

The convention in Dallas provided an
excellent opportunity to learn about our
industry, to network with current and
future professionals, to see some amazing
facilities, and to have a good time. Most of
the students I’ve spoken with said it was a
worthwhile experience. Unfortunately, I’ve
also heard from students who didn’t attend the
convention because the economy was bad and
they couldn’t afford the convention.
We do need to face some facts.
1) Attending the national convention and
participating in other NBS-AERho activities
does give you a better shot at employment
after graduation.
2) The convention is not cheap and it will cost
money every year. You are spending money
but you are investing in your future.
3) Many students at other schools are in the
same situation you’re in.
4) There are chapters that organize and
fundraise thousands of dollars so their
members can attend the convention.
Now is the time to organize your chapter
for fund-raising efforts over the summer and
next fall. Look to advice handed down over
the years and begin pursuing supplemental
funds now. Supplemental funds would
include student activities funding requests,
departmental funding requests, and potential
grants that may be available to you.
While you are looking ahead to the national
convention, don’t pass up the membership
benefits of your chapter and regional activities.
Start planning now to submit materials in
regional electronic media competitions. Be
sure your chapter is submitting materials to
Signals Online so you can share your successes
with other chapters. Then be sure to read the
Chapter Postings in Signals Online to see what
other chapters are doing and “borrow” their
ideas.
What can you do to continue to build your
chapter? Of course, recruiting new members
is crucial. But, brainstorm about ways
your chapter can help its members grow as
professionals. How can you use your skills
to improve your community and raise funds
for regional and national convention costs?
Building your chapter from within will only
increase its positive reputation even more.
How can you contribute to the First Fund
campaign? You can help bring down the
national costs with your local efforts.
Most chapters have graduating members.
(Please remind the designated member of the
chapter to send in the graduation report by
April 30. If they have paid for two or more
years of membership while a student, they will
receive one year of professional membership
free.) Keep in touch with these people – their
success stories will help you recruit new
members and increase your knowledge of the
profession.
Build on what you saw of your peers’ work
at the national competition – be motivated by
their production competition submissions and
strive to improve your writing and production
techniques. Also, encourage others in your
chapter. Sometimes a positive word can instill
the motivation to enter the competitions. No
one has ever won a competition who didn’t
enter it.
Finally, keep us informed and ask us
questions. Don’t hesitate to contact the
national officers – we’re here to help.

Good News
West Texas A&M University
West Texas A&M University’s NBS chapter
had been preparing for national convention

The chapter’s President, Maxine Ridling,
emphasized the importance in networking

taking great notes, as these conventions only
come around once a semester. The chapter
was able to take with them over twenty-five
members and travel to Dallas for the national
convention where the chapter brought home
three national awards.
New students were able to experience the
feeling for their field of interest as well as
meeting other students from other chapters.

WT’s broadcasting society had six national
finalist three of which were given the grand
prize in the following categories-video
documentary, overall web design and audio
drama program. Students from the chapter
also competed in the “on the spot” competition
where top prizes were given to WT in two
categories-news package and short film,
comedy.
With all good news we also welcomed in two
new members as they were officially initiated
into the chapter. Student members came
back from spring break ready to wrap things
up and start things going for the next school
year. Current officers are encouraging others
to follow leadership and are excited to hand
the torch down to other potential officers and
create new footstones for others.

and continue on bringing the good news, not
to mention national convention in Hollywood!
A Big Spring at
UNA

We’ve had a few set back with
ROAR Radio but we are getting
the issues all worked out. We have
a big spring ahead of us. We have
Spring Fling and the campus wide
food drive called “Junk in the
Trunk.” We are off to a great start
and there is no time to slow down.
This term is going to be a busy
one!

Rider Makes Their Mark
at Nationals
Rider University

Rider University’s chapter is proud to have

taken two grand prizes at Nationals for Video
Open Category, as well as Video Movie Trailer.
Congrats to Gina and Dave! Our advisor, Scott
Alboum and member, Gina Grosso, worked hard
at Nationals to put everything together, and they
are happy to be given some much needed rest.
Also at Nationals, we were happy to see that
another one of our members, Nicole Lawrence,
took over the position of National Vice President
for Student Services, and she is excited to put
together the Student Advisory Council for this
year.
We are looking forward to planning a concert in
the Fall in order to raise money for the First Fund
Campaign.
