The first half of my nursing curriculum has been both a joy and a challenge. I have learned so
much and discovered so much about myself that I look back and can barely recognize myself as I
was 1.5 years ago. Some of my greatest strengths have included using my past experiences as an
EMT and a phlebotomist in a PCP office and applying them to the skills and theory that we have
learned so far. My Nurse Comp II professor has expressed a desire for me to step up and be more
of a leader with my fellow student in this regard. I have also recognized that this is a completely
different role that I am training in so I should learn to look outside of those previous roles and
learn in a new way. Another strength is learning the hands on skills such as those including IVs,
Foleys, and straight catheters. The clinical experiences we have had are great in helping us
practice in a safe way. Safety has been a concern to us students but we feel safe practicing with
our instructors and feel confident that they will not let us put a patient or ourselves in danger.
This has eased our stress levels in the practicum setting. Weakness that I need to work on is
procrastination. I tend to leave assignments and studying to the last minute. This past semester
has been better in this aspect but I still have room for improvement. Stress management has been
a huge problem for me this semester and I anticipate it still being a problem for the rest of the
curriculum. My advisor gave me some advice that I will try to implement next semester. She
suggested trying to use my stress as motivation for cutting down on my procrastination. If I have
completed my assignments early and if I can establish a more productive routine perhaps I will
not feel the stress so badly. Something that I have been enjoying is the service learning
opportunities and community service missions that Bon Secours offers. Since my first semester I
have been enthralled with the mission programs and I have goals to participate in the Team Haiti
or Team Peru Global Outreach programs as well as the Grundy, VA October program. I feel
called to serve and I plan on serving the last half of my education. I have already participated in
Alternative Spring Break and I feel like I am only getting started in my service and my
education.
