Soln: X = Xo eµt
Xo = cell number @ t = 0
U = 1/X dS/dt
where
S = substrate concentration
FURTHERMORE
dX/st = -Y dS/dt
Not all substrate goes into cells for synthesis, some must go for energy end
products of CO2, H2O or CH4
Therefore Y < 1
But, we know in reality, a substrate runs out and we get a growth cycle
Several kinetic models have been developed to describe this type of substrate-
based growth.
µ = µmS/(Ks + S)
-dS/dt = KSX/(Ks + S)
Another form of the Monod equation (Simpkins & Alexander) 1984 Appl. Env.
Micro 47 : 6 : 1299 - 1306
1. Case 1 - zero order kinetics (X'o > > So and Ks << So)
-dS/dt = Ko
-dS/dt = KoS/(Ks + S)
3. Case 3 - 1st - order kinetics (X'o > > So and Ks >>So)
-dS/dt = K3S
where K3 = µmaxX'o/Ks
These three cases are analogous to Michaelis - Menten enzyme kinetics except I
replaced Km with Ks
where K4 = µmax/Ks
