CHAPTER-1:

In, this unit we have learnt about the Morphology and chemical composition of the cell
and function of each organelle present in the cell with the help of microscope.
In cell biology, an organelle is a specialized subunit within a cell that has a specific function.
Individual organelles are usually separately enclosed within their own lipid bilayers.
The name organelle comes from the idea that these structures are parts of cells, as organs are
to the body, hence organelle, the suffix -elle being a diminutive. Organelles are identified
by microscopy, and can also be purified by cell fractionation. There are many types of
organelles, particularly in eukaryotic cells. While prokaryotes do not possess organelles per se,
some do contain protein -based bacterial microcompartments, which are thought to act as
primitive organelles.
The cell (from Latin cella, meaning "small room") is the basic structural, functional, and
biological unit of all known living organisms. A cell is the smallest unit of life. Cells are often
called the "building blocks of life". The study of cells is called cell biology.
Cells consist of cytoplasm enclosed within a membrane, which contains many biomolecules
such as proteins and nucleic acids. Organisms can be classified as unicellular (consisting of a
single cell; including bacteria) or multicellular (including plants and animals). While the
number of cells in plants and animals varies from species to species, humans contain more than
10 trillion (1013) cells. Most plant and animal cells are visible only under a microscope, with
dimensions between 1 and 100 micrometers.
Cells were discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665, who named them for their resemblance to
cells inhabited by Christian Monks in a monastery. Cell theory, first developed in 1839
by Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, states that all organisms are composed of
one or more cells, that cells are the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living
organisms, and that all cells come from pre-existing cells. Cells emerged on Earth at least 3.5
billion years ago.
A microscope is an instrument used to see objects that are too small to be seen by the naked
eye. Microscopy is the science of investigating small objects and structures using such an
instrument. Microscopic means invisible to the eye unless aided by a microscope.
The most common microscope (and the first to be invented) is the optical microscope, which
uses light to pass through a sample to produce an image. Other major types of microscopes are
the fluorescence microscope, the electron microscope (both, the transmission electron
microscope and the scanning electron microscope) and the various types of scanning probe
microscopes.
