The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Part 1- Reflection: TE/EA Response

Directions: Now that we've finished the first section of the novel, we are going to take some time to reflect.
Answer ONE of the following questions in your own words using evidence from the text. Follow TE/EA format
(Check your notes or signs around the classroom for reference).

 TOPIC SENTENCE – Introduce an idea or claim.

 EVIDENCE – Use information from the text to support your idea or claim (need at least two!)
 EXPLAIN – Introduce and contextualize your evidence, explain what it is showing.
 ANALYSIS – Show how your evidence supports the topic sentence; show your critical thought.

1. How do you think the Lacks' lives might have been different had Henrietta's doctors asked for and
gotten informed consent from her family before gathering cells for research?
2. The author, Rebecca Skloot, had a hard time getting Henrietta's family, especially her children, to trust
her. Why?
3. What factors (race, class, gender, "the times") do you think were responsible for Henrietta's cells being
taken from her without clear permission?
4. The first section of the novel commemorates Henrietta's short life. Do you think that Skloot was
successful in recreating the scenes, emotions and characters from Henrietta's life? Why or why not?
