Module 2 Essay

I think that this module is beneficial. I know how to do a lot of this. However, with a few

of the tasks I really had to figure it out. It was challenging but not too difficult to where I was at

a loss. I am not a fan of technology, but it is a reality of the world we live in. If I want to be

successful in this world I need to have a basic understanding of technology, especially as a

teacher.

3) Identify the cause of U.S. entry into WWII
4) Identify what brought WWII to an end
5) Identify why U.S. became a world leader after WWII

Materials Needed:
 Power Point

Lesson Plan Steps:

World War 2 was a conflict between world powers that lasted from 1939-1945.
 The War had 2 sides, the Allies and the Axis Powers.
 Allies consisted primarily of Great Britain (leader Winston Churchill), France
(Leader Charles de Gaulle), Soviet Union (Leader Joseph Stalin), and the United
States (Leader FDR).
 Axis Powers consisted of Germany (Leader Adolf Hitler), Italy (Leader Benito
Mussolini), and Japan (Leader Hirohito).
 WWII was the bloodiest war with 40,000,000-50,000,000 fatalities
Cause of War
1) Germany wanted to invade Poland
 Poland was allied with Great Britain and France
 Adolf Hitler knew this and still wanted to invade Poland.
 Germany knew they needed help and reached out to the USSR creating an agreement
2) German and Soviet Agreement
 Both countries signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact
 This pact stated the agreement that Germany should invade Poland
 This pact also stated that Poland would be divided up into thirds. Germany would
get the Western third and the USSR would get the Eastern two-thirds.
3) Start of the War
Vodegel 11

 German Invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939

 Great Britain and France declare war on Germany Sept. 3, 1939.
Objective 1: Identify what caused WWII. (German invasion of Poland)

U.S. Delayed entry into the War

1) Hesitation
 Great Depression had just ended in 1939
 FDR did not want to go to war because many troops were lost on the WWI
conflict
 FDR just won reelection, for a 3rd time, and promised soldiers wouldn’t be sent
to foreign wars.
2) Still gave support
 Lend lease was a wartime agreement between the U.S. and G. B.
 FDR arranged to have American excess war supplies sent to G.B.
 In return the U.S. received Atlantic Bases
 Britain took more than what they could pay back
 When Britain realized this, they purposed lend-lease to FDR
Objective 2: Identify the justification of delaying entry into WWII (The Great Depression,
WWI, Campaign promises)

U.S. Involvement
1) Japanese attack
 There was a very limited Allied presence in the Pacific ocean, where Japan is
 Japan attacks U.S. Pearl Harbor base on December 7, 1941
 Pearl harbor was attacked by 2 waves of Japanese aircrafts, 360 in total
 U.S. was taken by surprise
 All but 2 ships were repaired and reserviced
 180 aircrafts were destroyed
 U.S Death toll 2,330, Wounded toll 1,140
 Attack was viewed as a failure because the fleet’s 3 aircraft carriers were out to
sea
2) U.S. forced into the War
 FDR signed a declaration of war the same day
 Public opinion was shifting toward entering the war but after the attack, entering
the war was no longer opposed
Objective 3: Identify the cause of U.S. entry into WWII (Japan’s Attack on Pearl Harbor)

End of the War

1) Roosevelt and Hitler’s death
 Roosevelt died in April of 1945 and succeeded by Harry S. Truman
 Hitler committed suicide in April of 1945 after the decimation of the Axis
Powers and Berlin where he was hiding. Hitler did this because Soviet troops
were advancing on him
2) Atomic Bombs
Vodegel 12

 Japan was the last Belligerent of the Axis Powers that needed to be dealt with
 Allied Powers met at Potsdam for a conference held over a 2 week period on
what to do about Japan
 Japan was told to surrender unconditionally, Allies promised the nation would
not be destroyed and people would not be enslaved
 Japanese would not surrender
 Truman did not want to invade Japan and cause more loss of U.S. life
 Truman decided to drop the first Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima, Japan August
6, 1945. Killed 70,000 immediately and over 100,000 by the end of 1945
 Japan still would not surrender. President Truman still did not want to lose
more U.S. life
 Second Bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, caused about
40,000 fatalities
 August 14, 1945 Hirohito surrenders
 War Officially ends on September 2, 1945
Objective 4: Identify what brought WWII to an end (Dropping of the Atomic Bombs and Axis
Power surrendering)

U.S. as a World Power

1) Post WWII
 The U.S. has been a World Power since before WWI
 WWII helped really solidify the U.S. role in the world
 We fought communism for the later portion of the 20th century
 We won the Cold War and successfully tore down the Berlin wall.
 In recent years we have been a global force for good, leading the War on Terror.
Objective 5: Identify why U.S. became a world leader after WWII (Showing consistent power
while fighting communism and winning the Cold War. Also leading in the War on Terror)
