TWO FACTOR FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTS

A farmer wants to determine the effect of soil type (upland and
lowland) and period of fertilizer application on the growth of rice. He
randomly selected three period of fertilizer application before rice is
sown in prepared plots. These are the following: A – 4 weeks, B – 2
weeks and C – 1 week. Each treatment combination is replicated
twice (i.e. two rice seeds for each combination. The growth of each
rice is then measured in terms of its height in centimeters.

Upland 1 3.5 4.5 0.8
2 4.0 2.0 1.0
Lowland 1 4.5 2.5 0.8

DERIVATION OF EXPECTED MEAN SQUARES
1. Write the sources of variation in the model.

DERIVATION OF EXPECTED MEAN SQUARES

2. Write the subscripts as column headings and over each
subscript write F for fixed and R for random factor. Write
also the number of levels each subscript cover.

3. For each row, copy the number of levels under each
subscript, provided the subscript DOES NOT APPEAR in the
row label.
