## The Bull’s Eye Lab

“The Mother of all Labs”
Part 1

Problem:

Students
must calculate the
initial velocity, vo,
of a projectile from y
an elevated cannon
fired at 0o.

Objective:

After x
completing this lab,
students should be able to apply the Kinematics equations to:
1. Calculate the initial velocity of any projectile at a given height and range;
2. Calculate the position of the projectile at any time during its flight.

Materials:

## 1 PASCO projectile launcher

1 meter stick
1 plumb bob with string
1 plain piece of paper
1 carbon paper
1 roll of Scotch Tape

Procedure:

1. Secure the projectile launcher on the lab table and set the launcher at  = 0o relative to the
floor.
2. Write down your Cannon Number: _________________ here!

## Name: ______________________________________ Period: _______ Date: ___/___/____

3. Drop the plumb line from the muzzle of the launcher to the floor and mark the plumb
point on the floor with a pencil.
4. Measure the height of the cannon, y, from the muzzle of the launcher to the plumb point
on the floor and record the data in the data table.
5. Please calculate the time, t, for the projectile.
6. Click the launcher to 1 click and fire the projectile and mark the approximate area where
the projectile landed and tape a plain piece of paper on the floor on the general area
where the projectile will land.
7. Place (do NOT tape) the carbon paper on top of the plain piece of paper on the floor and
relaunch the projectile.
8. Measure the distance x from the plumb point to the point where the projectile landed
and record the data in the data table.
9. Repeat steps 6-8 five times.
10. Calculate the initial velocity, vix, which is also your vo (muzzle velocity).
11. AGAIN, you must use the same cannon for your part 2 of this lab. Therefore, please
12. Repeat steps 1 through 11 with 2 clicks and 3 clicks.
