Violence, a

global public
health problem
L.P. Raquel A. Barrón Alamilla
Violence has probably always been
part of the human experience. Its
impact can be seen, in various
forms, in all parts of the world.
Each year, more than a
million people lose
their lives, and many
more suffer non-fatal
injuries, as a result of
self-inflicted,
interpersonal or
collective violence.

Overall, violence is
among the leading
causes of death
worldwide for people
aged 15–44 years.
This year, Mexico
reaches record
number in
homicides in May.

Experts even say it

could be the most
violent year in its
history.
There were 2,890
intentional homicides
just in May; but overall,
in 2018 it’s been
around 20.506
intentional homicides
and 24,004 crimes
against life and
integrity, which
includes criminal acts
such as personal
injuries and femicides
in Mexico.

The figure is worrisome
considering that between
January and May of 2018
13,298 intentional
homicides were reported
and the figure reported in
2017 in that same period
of time was 9,945, and in
the first five months of
2016 there were 7,656
intentional homicides.
Does all violent acts are framed

But… even

disturbing:

Do people know what is violent?

Many people do not know
what it is, so when they are
victims they do not know
what they are and
unfortunately social networks
do not help to inform properly
and they even promote
violent behavior patterns.

the root of
violent Violence is the result of the complex interplay
of individual, relationship, social, cultural and
behavior environmental factors. Understanding how
these factors are related to violence is one of
the important steps in the public health
approach to preventing violence.
