Linear Kinematics
instantaneous velocity =
average velocity =
= 4.17 m/s
Acceleration
• rate of change of velocity
• rate of change of rate of change of displacement
• second derivative of displacement with respect to time
• a vector quantity usually in m/s2
• in Newtons’ notation written as:
instantaneous acceleration =
average acceleration =
= – 0.714 m/s2
Let t = tf – ti
and a = (vf – vi) / t
displacement = area of rectangle + triangle
si6f = vi t + ½ a t2
Constant Linear Acceleration Equations
vf = vi + a t (I)
sf = si + vi t + ½ a t2 (II)
vf2 = vi2 + 2a (sf – si) (III)
sf = si + ½ ( vi + vf )t (IV)
Where:
si = initial position
sf = final position
vi = initial velocity
vf = final velocity
a = constant linear acceleration
t = duration from initial to final positions (i.e., Dt)
