WEEKLY REVIEW

Madam Speaker
The Parliament celebrated Women’s day as Meira Kumar
created history by becoming the first woman speaker of the
Lok Sabha. This congress leader is the daughter of legendary
congress leader Babu Jagjivan Ram and had been the Lok
Sabha M.P five times. Before joining politics she was an
Indian Foreign Service officer and has served in Indian
missions in Spain, Britain and Mauritius .She is the first Dalit
woman from India to have been appointed at this coveted post.
Political parties across the spectrum supported her election; we
can take it as an example of India’s model democratic process.
It is being said the choice would facilitate the challenging task
of enacting the women's quota in the legislature, apart from
strengthening the social message of gender equality.
But in all this the fun will be change of genders, slip of tongue,
when ‘madam speaker' might become ‘Mr. speaker sir' as recently The CPI(M) leader
continued to address Ms. Kumar as 'Sir' before switching over to 'Madam'. Even
Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav kept referring to Ms. Kumar as
'Mohoday' instead of 'Mohodaya'.

General Motors now Government Motors

One of the most powerful symbols worldwide of American industrial files into
chapter eleven bankruptcy making it an extraordinary and historic economic event.
Still wondering who we are talking about???Yes the pillar of American economy,
THE General Motors.Producing and manufacturing Vauxhall, Buick, Cadillac,
Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Opel, Oldsmobile, Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn, Saab
and Vauxhall for years GM claims $82.29 billion in assets against almost $173 billion
in debt.
The filing of bankruptcy by the company according to Chapter 11 does not mean that
it will cease its operations. The U.S. bankruptcy law associated with this chapter
grants a given company the right to sell some of its assets and equities, the ability to
restructure its debts, and the right to dissolve some of its contracts and the closure of
some of its operations.
Of course recession was a big hit though, but can we put all the blame to recession?
What about the 1990 capitulation to UAW in which GM agreed to pay workers even

when plants were idle? Having to pay thousands of employees for not working, fund
expensive employee healthcare packages mandated by the union that cost an
estimated $1,600 dollars per car manufactured? And finance lavish pensions that
drove the corporation billions of dollar...was this not a reason?
Well instead of now
figuring out the whys,
let’s see the
what’s next?
President Obama
wishes for a
speedy
bankruptcy to create
a new company from
GM's best assets,
within 60 to 90 days
for which the U.S. government has pumped about 50 billion dollars to assist the
company in its current crisis. Let’s hope for the best.

Thank God there is a New P.M

After weeks of Political turmoil Madhav Kumar Nepal of the Communist Party of
Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) was elected unopposed as Nepal’s new Prime
Minister. Madhav, 56, has the backing of 22 political parties and 350 members in the
601-seat parliament. He was a prominent figure in 2005 protests against the
authoritarian rule of then-King Gyanendra and the weeks of street protests that led to
the restoration of democracy a year later
Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda was
elected but he stepped down after 8 months as his
bid to fire the army chief failed, sharpening the
political struggle in Nepal. After three weeks the
new P.M came into picture but the Maoists say
they would boycott the new parliament and vowed
to keep up street protests against the president,
who blocked their attempt to sack the army chief.
Let’s hope that Mr.Nepal is able to fill the
political vacuum in Nepal.
