Madam Speaker
The Parliament celebrated Women’s day as Meira Kumar
created history by becoming the first woman speaker of the
Lok Sabha. This congress leader is the daughter of legendary
congress leader Babu Jagjivan Ram and had been the Lok
Sabha M.P five times. Before joining politics she was an
Indian Foreign Service officer and has served in Indian
missions in Spain, Britain and Mauritius .She is the first Dalit
woman from India to have been appointed at this coveted post.
Political parties across the spectrum supported her election; we
can take it as an example of India’s model democratic process.
It is being said the choice would facilitate the challenging task
of enacting the women's quota in the legislature, apart from
strengthening the social message of gender equality.
But in all this the fun will be change of genders, slip of tongue,
when ‘madam speaker' might become ‘Mr. speaker sir' as recently The CPI(M) leader
continued to address Ms. Kumar as 'Sir' before switching over to 'Madam'. Even
Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav kept referring to Ms. Kumar as
'Mohoday' instead of 'Mohodaya'.
