Subject: PhysEd/LA Grade: KG Date: October 25/18


Lesson: The Colour Monster /Emotional Intelligence/Mystery Box Activity
Time: 9:05-10
Big Ideas: Good health comprises physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

SLOs: From the Program of Studies


- Emotions and their cause and effect.

Instructional Objectives:
- Students will identify different emotions and which Colours may represent them.

Key Questions:
What are emotions?
Can we name some emotions?
What might be in the box?
What might these items mean?

Materials:
- Mystery Box
- The Colour Monster book
- 5 Jars – Labelled with Emotions.
- Blue Items
- Yellow Items
- Red Items
- Black Items
- Green Items

These items go along with the items in the Colour Monster story They will be sorted
into their corresponding jars

Preparation:
- Have Jars Labelled with the five emotions in the colour monster book.
- Have all items inside the box.
- Print out Worksheets and Colour sheet.

I can statement:
- I can identify which emotions correspond with each color.
Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction:
- Introduce the mystery box that you may have. Have students guess what might be
in the box.
- Have the special helper open the box and put the items on the counter.
- Ask students again what these items might mean.

2. Read “The colour monster”


- Read the story and then ask students again what the items in the box might mean?
What colour goes in each Jar? Can we sort the monster’s emotions for him?

3. Colour each emotion worksheet


- Have students colour each monster on the worksheet with the colour they think
fits the emotion most. They can choose to colour the monster which ever colour
fits best for them.

4. Create your own Monster:


- Have students create their own monster.
- Model and show your own monster. Encourage students to colour the monster
with the emotions they feel.

5. Conclusion:
- Conclude by reviewing the different emotions and how we can identify them with
Colours!

*This lesson was used in a kindergarten classroom* It was used to teach the emotions and
how we might identify them to young students. This activity could be modified and used
differently to take a deeper look at emotions.
