TUTORIAL 1

1. Give brief note on the different types of electric power generation: Conventional Power
plants: Thermal, Hydro, Nuclear & Non-conventional: Wind/Solar.
[Hint: layout of power plant including major equipment; brief working principle, types of
plant (if any); advantages & disadvantages]

2. Consider three consumers having different load requirements at different times.

Determine a) diversity factor b) the load factor and average load of each consume.

Consumer 1 Max demand – 5kW at 6 pm ; Load of 3 kW at 7 pm; Load factor- 20%

Consumer 2 Max demand – 5kW at 11 am ; Load of 2 kW at 7 pm ; Average load

1.2 kW
Consumer 3 Max demand – 3kW at 7 pm ; - ; Average load 1 kW

[Ans: a) 1.625; b) Avg load= 1 kW; LF2=24%; LF3=33.3%]

3. A single phase line as in fig, conductors a and a’ in parallel form one conductor and
conductor b and b’ form the return path. Calculate the total inductance of the line per km
assuming that current is equally shared by the two parallel conductors: conductor
diameter is 2 cm.

[Ans: 1.3636mH/km]

4. The three conductors of three phase line are arranged at the three corners of a triangle of
sides 2m, 2.5m, 4.5m.calculate the inductance per km of the line which is regularly
transposed. The diameter of each conductor is 1.24 cm.
[Ans: 1.274 mH]

5. The tariff in force is Rs 150 per KVA of maximum demand and 8 paise per unit
consumed. If the load factor is 30 %, find the overall cost per unit at (i) unity p.f and (ii)
0.7 p.f. [Ans: 13.7 paise, 16.15 paise]

6. The installed capacity of a station is 210 MW. The capital cost of the station is
Rs.1000/MW. The fixed cost is 13% of the cost of investment. On full load at 100% load
factor the variable/running cost of station per year is 1.3 times the fixed cost. Find the
cost of generation per kWh. [Ans: 3.42 paise]

7. A 3phase 500HP 50Hz and 11kV star connected induction motor has full load efficiency
of 85% at lagging pf of 0.75 and is connected to a feeder. If it is desired to correct pf of
the load to 0.9 lag, Determine

a. The size of the capacitor bank in kvar(175.53)

b. The capacitance of each unit if the capacitors are connected in delta as well as
star( delta1.539micro F & star 4.1619539micro F)

8. A synchronous motor having a power consumption of 50kW is connected in parallel with

a load of 200kW having a lagging pf of 0.8. If the combined load has a pf of 0.9 what is
the value of leading kvar supplied by the motor and the pf at which motor operates.

9. One circuit of a single phase transmission line is composed of three solid 0.5cm diameter
wires and the return path is composed of two 1cm diameter as shown in fig. Find the
inductance due to the current in each side of the line and the complete inductance of the
complete line.

10. A factory has a maximum demand of of 250kW at 0.8 pf lag with an annual consumption of
40MU. The tariff is 150/kVA of maximum demand plus 5Rs/unit. Calculate the flat rate of
energy consumption. What will be annual savings if pf is raised to unity?

11. A 3-phase double circuit line, 440kV, 50Hz and 100km long is arranged as shown below:
The conductors are transposed. Diameter of conductor is 2cm.
a) Find the Inductance per phase per km.
b) Find reactance per phase.
