Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction

A Social networking sites is described as a websites where individuals can set

up an online profile, describing his/her interests”. It has been set to have both a negative

and positive effect on society. The media seems to control the way people are and how

they interact with others. Social networking gives individuals the ability to feel free and

open about things. Social networking has greatly impacted society, especially when it

comes down to common sites such as Facebook, my space , or even twitter. Although

Social networking can have a positive impact on society, it mostly has a negative impact

on society. The social networking sites websites make it so that way people can easily

interact with the people around them whether it be people they know or people they

don’t . your cellphone might not always work so a lot of people turn to others, means of

communication, which is where people social networking sites comes into play. Sites

such as Facebook, my space, and twitter give people the opportunity to communicate

with other individuals. These sites are also used for social events that you may want

people to attend.
MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 2
Background of the study

Social networking websites or the so called SNS is an online service for people

who want social relations to other around the world. The netizens or the people who

used the internet use SNS for communication to others by means of e-mail or instant

message using their own account. SNS are widely used nowadays in our developing

country. Most SNS are to provide interactions of different people who share the same

interest, likes and even real-life connections.

According to Miles Walker, “Social networking site is aid to have begun in 1978

with bulletin board system or BBS. BBS was required to connect in modem of that

computer and can exchange information through telephone pole and was the very first

system that allows users to sign in and interact with other people but it is slow since

only one user can log at a time’. The SNS system started very slow, long time ago with

the usage of telephone pole to connect to others. When they use the telephone for

calling, the internet dies out. They can’t use both at the same time so it’s quite

troublesome in the late years. The very first version of instant messaging came about

1988 with inetrelay chat or IRC, a unix –based limiting access to most people that was

used or link and file sharing and generally keeping in touch with one another. Using an

instant messaging helps conserve time since in the late years most of the people use

letters to send their feelings to the ir loved ones in a faraway place.

MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 3
Theoretical framework

Our research study “The effects of social networking site to the academic performance of

students” tried to answer the question “What will happen to the academic performance of student with

their habitual interaction to SNS?” The research study of Nayzabekov (2012) claimed that SNS will

affect it in a bad way, with the statement, “the idea of multitasking which could perform different years

of action while visiting SNS would affect the concentration of students, because for example a student

has a lot of assignments and works on different subjects instead of doing it on time and

early, he/she visits first the SNS.” According to this statement, SNS will affect the concentration of a

student that we presume would lead to the bending of focus of student from studying to

usage of SNS. This is supported by the statement of Ellis and Knaus which sees it as, “a failure to

initiate or complete a task or activity by determined time.” In other words, he sees SNS-related activities

as nonacademic activities that will result in postponing the completion of academic task.

Hypothesis

There Is No Significant Relationship between “ Social Networking Site “ and the

Academic Performance of the Students.

Statement Of The Problem

This study purposes to answer “ what are the effects of social networking

sites (SNS) in the academic performance of all TLC students in Mt Moriah

Christian Academy ? “ SNS has become viral in the society and even the world .

this has become teenagers’ way of killing boredom . our system for school has

been. Worsening because there are many students or teenagers that are starting to

lose focus on their studies . their tardiness is one of the reasons. Many students

are saying that they are tired , they lack sleep and even start sleeping in class

hours . the researchers concluded that since teenagers always want to be in ,

social networking sites (SNS) could be the culprit . hence , this study was

conducted to know if such activity results to this.

MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 5
Significance of the Study
Social networking sites (SNS), are deemed to be one of the factors why students’ get

interrupted on their studies. As a matter of fact, SNS has a dual face that can bring to the students. It

has advantages and disadvantages for its users. Nowadays, parents prioritize their children in

terms of different aspects, particularly on their studies. Because of this, this study aims to help

them parents be aware on the possible effects that SNS could give to their children. This study would

give the parents knowledge on the probable academic failure of their children

students as a result of constant interaction with it. Moreover, this study is also targeted to

benefit other researchers or people who need facts and information about this topic. This study is also

seen to be beneficial to the students. Furthermore, this study could give a probable explanation to the

teachers who surmise why their students' academic excellence are changing. Since this study focuses on

the effects of SNS on the students, it could also help DEPED to create a better system for the students

who are struggling with bad effects of social networking sites

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study investigates the effects of social networking websites in the study of students.

The study includes what social networking sites they visit. Furthermore, in this study it also contained

the aspects social networking sites (SNSs) have to encourage users to visit. This study also wrote about

the disadvantages and advantages of SNS in the academic excellence of the students. Besides, this study

would discuss if social networking sites affects the academic performance of the students. However, the

study would not cover their financial status like if they use money for several purposes. It will not also

include the effects of such websites to the emotional aspect of the students. Aside from that, the study

would not include how teenagers or students used social networking sites.
MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 6
Definition of Terms

Social Networking Sites - are sites students use for non-academic and academic purposes in several

terms like communicating with their friends, playing games viewing their profiles Facebook,

Twitter, MySpace and Friendster

Academic performance - skills or ability of the students in terms of their academic to pass in required

subjects especially on their weekly quizzes in 1 week on Math, Science and English subjects

The Review of Related Literature and Studies

Foreign Literature

Since their emergence in 2005, Web 2.0 technologies have been advanced as

potentially transformative in the area of education in general and foreign language

learning in particular. Web 2.0 technologies are presenting new opportunities for

developing diverse online learning environments and enhancing interactivity,

participation and feedback between students, their peer groups and teachers. This article

examines one of the most significant Web 2.0 tools, Social Networking Sites (SNS), and

focuses on Live mocha, an example of an online community specifically aimed at

encouraging collaboration between foreign language learners. Results from the

ethnographic approach adopted in the paper indicate that: SNSs can be used by

language learners to explore new relationships rather than merely maintain existing ones

and that longitudinal studies are required to achieve a better understanding of the

complex processes of mediation involved in online community formation and

maintenance.
MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 8
Foreign Studies

As social networking sites have risen in popularity over the past years, people

have been spending an excessive amount of time on the Internet in general and social

networking sites in specific. This has led researchers to debate the establishment of

Internet addiction as an actual clinical disorder. Social networking can also affect the

extent to which a person feels lonely. In a Newsweek article, JohannahCornblatt explains

“Social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace may provide people with a false

sense of connection that ultimately increases loneliness in people who feel alone”. John

T. Cacioppo, a neuroscientist at the University of Chicago, claims that social networking

can foster feelings of sensitivity to disconnection, which can lead to loneliness.[116] Fabio

Sabatini and Francesco Sarracino found that if an individual tends to trust people and

have a significant number of face-to-face interactions, the individual is likely to assess

their own well-being as relatively high. The researchers found that online social

networking plays a positive role in subjective well-being when the networking is used to

facilitate physical interactions, but networking activities that do not facilitate face-to-face

interactions tend to erode trust, and this erosion can then negatively affect subjective

well-being (independent of the online social interaction itself). Sabatini and Sarracino

conclude that “The overall effect of networking on individual welfare is significantly

negative.” However, some scholars have expressed that concerns about social networking

are often exaggerated and poorly researched .

MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 9
Local Literature

Social networks gave a big help to everyone, especially among the students

businessman and other members of the society. Social networks has different features

that may enjoy by the people all around the world what the problem is, people loses

their self-control in using them. Facebook is the most popular social networking site

today wherein people may share and upload videos, pictures, messages and chat. Twitter

is also famous to every people nowadays wherein people can share their feelings,

thoughts and ideas. Through twitter, they can easily be connected to their favorite

celebrities and they can also be updated on what is trend all around the world. Aside from

these two, Tumbler, MySpace, and Bring also became a raging craze to everyone. Social

networking communities will definitely stay due to its millions of users. In addition,

students today stay on these accessibilities of information they may get in social

networks. Social network may help them in giving knowledge in thesis and journals but

still negative effects of this still over weighs especially about losing their self-control.

Social networks bring a big benefit about communication because through this we can

easily communicate our love dones despite of the geographic distance. Social network

may also help celebrities to be more contact to their fans because through these sites they

can easily post what are the recent happenings about them. Through social networks we

can be updated in every happening not just in celebrities but also the recent updates to

our country and also in the whole world. Social networking sites can be a good way to

make connections with people who has similar interests and goals.

Social networkers in the Philippines also showed the highest level of engagement

on social networking sites averaging 5.5 hours per visitor in February, with visitors

frequenting the social networking category an average of 26 times during the month," the

comScore statement said citing its latest report on social networking activity in the

region. Strong engagement was also exhibited by Internet users in Indonesia (5.4 hours

per visitor and 22 visits per visitor), Australia (3.8 hours per visitor and 20 visits per

visitor) and Malaysia (nearly 3.8 hours per visitor and 22 visits per visitor)," the

statement added. On average, 50.8 % of the total online population in the region visited a

social networking site in February 2010, equivalent to a total of 240.3 million visitors.

Facebook.com, meanwhile is the top social networking site 7 Asia-Pacific markets,

including the Philippines."Local players led in Japan and South Korea , while Google-

owned Orkut ranked as the top social networking site in India and Yahoo!’s Wretch.cc

led in Taiwan," the statement said."While social networking continues to be one of the

most popular and fastest growing Web activities in the world, its dynamics in the Asia-

Pacific region exhibit significantly more individual market differentiation than in other

global regions," comScore executive vice president for Asia Pacific Will Hodgman

said."In some markets, such as the Philippines, Australia and Indonesia, social

networking is one of the most popular Web activities reaching nearly 90 percent of the

entire Internet population, while other markets report less PC-based social networking

penetration, which can often be attributed to the high propensity to engage in social

networking via mobile devices in these markets," it added.com Score, Inc.

MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 11
Synthesis

The state of social networking site is no insignificant affair. Nor is it a

conversation relegated to a niche contingent of experts and gurus. Social media

is pervasive and it is transforming how people find and share information and how they

connect and collaborate with one another. I say that as if I'm removed from the media and

cultural (r)evolution that is digital socio economics. But in reality, I'm part of it just like

everyone else. You and I both know however, that' I'm not saying anything you don't

already know.

Social media is clearly becoming the new normal. For the last several years,

simply adding the word "social" in front of anything and everything from media and

gaming to commerce and CRM to business and consumerism, it's clear that we are finally

approaching the end of the hype curve to start making sense of what it all means and just

how far it applies to the future of business and media.

But as social media becomes part of our cultural fabric and even as we witness

businesses, governments, sports teams, and almost every organization socialize

communication efforts today, much of what we see is merely the beginning of something

that will one day become something far more important than the medium itself.

Research Methodology

Is contain of research method use , population frame and size , description

of respondents , sampling procedures , instrumentation ,data gathering , and statistical

treatment of data.

Instrumentation

The researcher used indirect method in the study to know the factors

that can affect social networking sites (SNS) among all TLC students in Mt

Moriah Christian Academy. Indirect method is the way of collecting data that

make use of a written questionnaires.

Research Locale

This study was taken in Mt. Moriah Christian Academy. Located at 285 St.

Martin., Mahogany Homes Bagumbayan Taguig City.

Population and Sample Size

The researcher’s population is all TLCStudents in Mt. Moriah Christian

Academy. The researcher use the systematic sampling technique to select the

respondents, the researcher use the formula of K = .where N = 148 (Population) and n =

5% (sample size); where K= 1. So every 1st is the space interval. The size is 60.
MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 13

First the researcher used the Slovin’s Formula to find the sample size. The researcher

substitute

N = 148; n = 15%
__N___
n = 1 + Ne2

____148_____
n = 1 + 148(0.15)2

___148____
n = 1 + 148(0.0225)

____148___
n = 1 + 3.33

___148___
n= 4.33

n= 34.18

n= 34

Sampling Technique:

Methods on how The researcher use the Systematic Sampling:

First,The researcher use the formula of K = Where N = Population; n = Sample Size.

Second, Substitute the numbers where N = 148; n = 34. Third,Solve it. Divide the

population (148) and the sample size (34). Fourth, The answer is 4.35 and round it off

and the final answer will be 4. Every 4th is our space interval.

Research Instrumentation

The researcher used survey questionnaires. The instrument used was a research-

made Questionnaire checklist to gather the needed data for the students profile. The draft

of the Questionnaire was drawn out based on the researcher’s readings, previous studies,

professional Literature, published and unpublished thesis relevant to the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher used indirect method in gathering the information in order to supply

the wants And needs of the researcher. The researcher let the adviser check the

questionnaires then it wasGiven to the respondents to answer. The researcher received

the data after they answered theGiven questionnaires then compiled it. The researcher

used the purposive sampling technique to Determine the respondents. The Chi- Square

was used to analyze the hypothesis. .In Administering the questionnaire, the researcher

was use the time allotted for vacant to avoid Distractions of class discussions. The

student responses were given enough time to answer the questions. . After data gathering,

the researcher now collected it for tallying the scores and to Apply the statistical

treatment to be used with the study.

MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 18

Statistical Treatment of Data

The researcher tabulated, analyzed, computed, and interpreted all the gathered

information. The researcher found their weighted mean, degree of freedom and chi-

square results .In the analysis and interpretation of data, the researcher used descriptive

statistics. On the data analysis and hypothesis testing, the different statistical formula is

appliedon the study. Then to test the hypothesis ,the Chi-square is used responses made

by students describing their socio-demographic characteristics, preference of choosing

their career, and anticipated problems were presented. For instance, sex, age, parent’s

educational attainment, parent’s occupation, size of income and sibling position. This

was also applied for top three career choice and students preference in making his career

choice. In providing overall picture of the socio-demographic characteristics and career

preference, as well as anticipated problems in pursuing their studies and it’s effect on

students, summary presentations will also presented.Statistical Treatment for

DataResponses to the questionnaire by senior high school students were statistically

analyzed with the data requirements of the study. Students were statistically analyzed

with the data instruments of the study. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count,

mean, percent and rank are considered The researcher used Chi-square to determine the

hypothesis if it is accepted or not.The chi-squared distribution (also chi-square or χ²-

distribution) with k degrees of freedom is the distribution of a sum of the squares

of k independent standard normal random Variables. It is one of the most widely

used probability distributions in inferential statistics, e.g., in hypothesis testing or in

construction of confidence intervals.

MT. MORIAH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 19

Formulas of Chi-square:

X2 = N(AD – BC)
(A+B)(C+D)(A+C)(A+D)

Where:

N= Sample Size

Fo = Observed frequency

Fe = Expected frequency

Chi-square was also used to compare observed data with data we would expect to obtain

according to a specific hypothesis.
