World Rule
Accountability, Legitimacy, and the Design of Global Governance

Cocktail Reception
Wednesday, October 13,
Come celebrate the publication of Jonathan 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Koppell's timely and important new book
World Rule: Accountability, Legitimacy, and Arizona State University
the Design of Global Governance published Washington Center
in August by the University of Chicago 1834 Connecticut Avenue NW
Press. Koppell, a former Fellow at the New Washington, DC 20009
America Foundation and Yale faculty
member, is the recently-appointed dean of
the Public Affairs School at Arizona State
University.

Koppell's book wrestles with a question

bedeviling efforts to address many global
problems. Whether the subject is climate
change, financial meltdowns, Internet
freedom or intellectual property rights, the reality of global interconnectedness has far
outpaced our ability to govern across borders. So-called "global governance
organizations (GGOs)" - from the World Trade Organization to the Forest Stewardship
Council -have taken on prominent roles in the management of international affairs,
seeking to set standards and promulgate rules. But, as "World Rule" explores, these
organizations struggle mightily against the gravitational pull of national sovereignty.
How can global governance organizations gain sufficient legitimacy and power to be
effective, without antagonizing their stakeholders?

The event will take place from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Arizona State University Washington Center,
located at 1834 Connecticut Avenue, NW.

Jonathan GS Koppell is Director of the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University. He is the author of The
Politics of Quasi-Government: Hybrid Organizations and the Dynamics of Bureaucratic Control and was for ten
years on the faculty of the Yale School of Management. Koppell is a former fellow of the New America Foundation.

CONVICTION Synopsis:

Two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank (MILLION DOLLAR BABY, BOYS DON'T
CRY) stars in CONVICTION, the story of the unwavering bond between brother and sister who
made a solemn promise to always be there for one another, no matter what. When her older
brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell) is arrested and sentenced to life in prison for murder, Betty Anne
Waters, a Massachusetts wife and mother of two, dedicates her life to overturning the murder
conviction utilizing the newly burgeoning science of DNA testing. Convinced that her brother is
innocent, Betty Anne puts herself through high school, college and finally law school on her quest
to help her brother. With the help of Abra Rice (Academy Award nominee Minnie Driver), her
best friend and de facto partner in the effort to free Kenny, Betty Anne seeks the help of famed
lawyer Barry Scheck (Peter Gallagher) and his organization, The Innocence Project. Pouring
through suspicious evidence mounted by Officer Nancy Taylor (Academy Award nominee
Melissa Leo), a small town cop who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that Kenny
was convicted, Betty Anne meticulously retraces the steps that led to Kenny's arrest. Over the
course of nearly two decades, Betty Anne and her team uncover facts and evidence that ultimately
set the defining legal precedent of DNA use in the American justice system.

Atti Vakili Wheeler

Atti Vakili Wheeler received her Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts

from Academia Dei Belle Arti in Rome, Italy with a specialty in
drawing and painting. Wheeler notes, "I enjoy searching out all
mediums as there is always something new to discover in a
variety of texture and materials while combining old and new
techniques." She uses a mixture of oil painting with natural
materials. This often involves collages using all kinds of colorful
earth materials, laid out for both visual and textured effects. For
Wheeler, painting is not merely copying or illustrating what is in
front of her. Her works always convey her appreciation and
excitement for her desired subjects. Wheeler's artworks explore
the qualities of light, shade and color while combining many
materials. With a special sense of artistic movement with lights,
shapes always attract her. The creative impulse inspires her so
much, that she usually has no choice but to pull out her brush,
paints and to begin a new creation.

Art show curated by Isabelle Spicer

Opening Reception

Thursday, October 14, 4:00-7:00 p.m.

Bistro La Bonne

1340 U Street NW
France has often been a source of inspiration for artists. Strangely enough, for me, it never was: I started to paint in
Russia , and now I paint Washingtonian cityscapes. I cannot deny that Paris , the city where I grew up, is a beautiful city,
but for me it is too much of gray and ochre. I prefer more vivid colors. That is why I was very surprised when I saw the work
of the three artists I am happy to show at Bistro La Bonne. They found colors where all I saw was shades of black and
white, and really made me rediscover my home city and country.

I feel a very strong connection with Charlie Gaynor‘s photographs. I love the subjects and perspective he chose, and
especially the colors of his sometimes - almost abstract- pictures. His inquisitive eyes find originality everywhere. A blue
door, an antique shop, a colorful shop: the most banal topics turn into a work of art under Charlie‘s eye.

We have a saying in French: ―voir la vie en rose‖ (see life through rose-colored glasses). Artist Iurro is such an optimistic.
But instead of pink, he turns the grayest object in blue, often the most predominant color in his paintings. He comes from
former Czechoslovakia . When the Berlin wall fell in 1989, he was free to travel, and France was one of the first
countries he chose to visit. The paintings he is showing at La Bonne are the results of his last trip to France , in Brittany,
the region where my family is from. Brittany , which has a beautiful wild coast, is on the ocean and the weather is a bit like
in Seattle , I remember it as gray and chilly. Iurro sees things differently: his paintings of Josselin and Port-Louis are
predominantly blue.

You might remember Deborah Saks as a photographer. She has often showed her work in the past decade. It is a new
side of her creativity that you will now discover: her collages. She is no stranger to France : she has lived there many
years and is perfectly bilingual. However, I especially like her systematic approach. She set up a questionnaire and sent it
to her friends, to get perceptions about Paris as a city, and turned them into beautiful collages about France.

Luxemburg, Malta, Monaco and Slovenia - read poetry from their home countries. This year’s event features
poetry that centers on the important topic of National Identity. The Small Nation Poetry Night will be followed
by a reception.

Small Countries Poetry Reading

One of my favorite annual diplomatic events is the ―Small Countries Poetry Reading‖ which will
take place this year on Thursday, Oct. 14, at American University‘s Katzen Center.

Ambassador Claudia Fritsche of Liechtenstein has been a leader within this group from the beginning,
when she a former Maltese Ambassador John Lowell, whose father was poet laureate of Malta,
created the event as a distinctive way for smaller countries to promote themselves, their products and
their heritage.

―The Small Nations Poetry Reading has become a wonderful tradition showcasing the unique cultures
from countries that may not have the same opportunity as bigger embassies do to reach out to a large
group of people,‖ said Fritsche. ―The audience experiences poems read by ambassadors from 10
countries with the last stanza read in their native language. Afterwards the guests get to interact with
representatives of the embassies to learn more about their countries, enjoying some good food and
wine.‖

The event, now in its sixth year, will feature food from the Embassy of Bahrain, which is participating
along with Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and
Slovenia.

Winner-Take-All Politics
How Washington Made the Rich Richer--and Turned Its Back on the Middle Class
By Jacob S. Hacker and Paul Pierson
Simon & Schuster, September 2010
A groundbreaking work that identifies the real culprit behind one of the great economic crimes of our
time: the growing inequality of incomes between the vast majority of Americans and the richest of the
rich.

We all know that the very rich have gotten a lot richer these past few decades while most Americans
haven't. In fact, the exorbitantly paid have continued to thrive during the current economic crisis, even
as the rest of Americans have continued to fall behind. Why do the "haveit- alls" have so much more?
And how have they managed to restructure the economy to reap the lion's share of the gains and shift
the costs of their new economic playground downward, tearing new holes in the safety net and
saddling all of us with increased debt and risk? Lots of so-called experts claim to have solved this great
mystery, but no one has really gotten to the bottom of it-until now.
In their lively and provocative Winner-Take-All Politics, renowned political scientists Jacob S. Hacker
and Paul Pierson demonstrate convincingly that the usual suspects-foreign trade and financial
globalization, technological changes in the workplace, increased education at the top-are largely
innocent of the charges against them. Instead, they indict an unlikely suspect and take us on an
entertaining tour of the mountain of evidence against the culprit. The guilty party is American politics.
Runaway inequality and the present economic crisis reflect what government has done to aid the rich
and what it has not done to safeguard the interests of the middle class. The winner-take-all economy is
primarily a result of winner-take-all politics.

In an innovative historical departure, Hacker and Pierson trace the rise of the winner-take-all
economy back to the late 1970s when, under a Democratic president and a Democratic Congress, a
major transformation of American politics occurred. With big business and conservative ideologues
organizing themselves to undo the regulations and progressive tax policies that had helped ensure a
fair distribution of economic rewards, deregulation got under way, taxes were cut for the wealthiest,
and business decisively defeated labor in Washington. And this transformation continued under
Reagan and the Bushes as well as under Clinton, with both parties catering to the interests of those at
the very top. Hacker and Pierson's gripping narration of the epic battles waged during President
Obama's first two years in office reveals an unpleasant but catalyzing truth: winner-take-all politics,
while under challenge, is still very much with us.

Winner-Take-All Politics-part revelatory history, part political analysis, part intellectual journey-
shows how a political system that traditionally has been responsive to the interests of the middle class
has been hijacked by the superrich. In doing so, it not only changes how we think about American
politics, but also points the way to rebuilding a democracy that serves the interests of the many rather
than just those of the wealthy few.

Reviews:
"Engrossing. . . . Hacker and Pierson . . . deliver the goods. . . . Their description of the organizational
dynamics that have tilted economic policymaking in favor of the wealthy is convincing." - Justin Fox,
Harvard Business Review

"How the U.S. economic system has also moved 'off center' toward an extreme concentration of wealth,
and how progressive efforts to reverse that trend have run aground. . . . A very valuable book."- Ed
Kilgore, Washington Monthly

"Hacker and Pierson argue strongly that the concentration of income at the top is not just the work of
deep economic forces. It is aided and abetted by politicians who favor the very rich or allow policies
that once favored the rest of us to erode. Hacker and Pierson look closely, sharply, and entertainingly
at the way that interest-group politics and the political power of money have allowed this travesty of
democracy to happen. This book is a wake-up call. Read it and wake up."- Robert Solow, winner of the
Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics in 1987

"Buy a copy of Hacker and Pierson's book and read it. Seriously. . . . This is the most complete and
sustained explanation I've ever read of why, over the past 30 years, America has gone the direction it
has even while most other countries haven't. . . . For me, it was a 300-page 'Aha!' moment."- Kevin
Drum, Mother Jones blog

"The worst social change in America during my lifetime has been its shift from the land of middle-class
opportunity to the land of super-rich privilege. The economic polarization of America is a familiar
problem, but Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson approach it in an original way, using detective-story
procedure to identify an unsuspected culprit -- one that has little to do with 'globalization' or
'technological revolution' or China or the like. Their case is convincing, and it builds to a
recommendation of how Americans could organize to save their country's promise. I hope people read
the book and follow its advice." - James Fallows, National Correspondent, The Atlantic

"Hacker and Pierson make a compelling case. If Marie Antoinette were alive, she might aver of today's
great economically challenged masses, 'Let them nibble on passbook-savings-account interest' - if they
can manage to save anything, that is." - David Holahan, The Christian Science Monitor

"This is a transformative book. It's the best book on American politics that I've read since Before the
Storm. . . . If it has the impact it deserves, it will transform American public arguments about politics
and policymaking." - Henry Farrell, Crookedtimber.org

"Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson combine enormous learning about how our political system actually
works with a spritely facility for getting their ideas across-rare gifts in American political debate.
Winner-Take-All Politics carries forward the argument from their path-breaking book Off-Center. It
explains why the 2006 and 2008 elections only began a reform process that still has a ways to go.
Hacker and Pierson have always stayed ahead of the conventional arguments and Winner-Take-All
Politics keeps them in the lead." - E.J. Dionne, Jr., author of Why Americans Hate Politics and Souled Out

"Hacker and Pierson deftly pose and solve a political mystery: How could our democracy have turned
away from a politics of broadly shared prosperity that served most citizens? Clue: take a close look at
the elite capture of the Democratic Party. Winner-Take-All Politics-stylishly written and well
documented with evidence-is a must-read for understanding the great political puzzle of our time." -
Robert Kuttner, author of A Presidency in Peril and co-editor of The American Prospect

"Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson brilliantly break the intellectual logjam over the causes of runaway
inequality. Their findings put responsibility and control back into the hands of officeholders, elected
and appointed. Winner-Take-All Politics is crucial reading for all those engaged in American politics." -
Thomas B. Edsall, political editor, Huffington Post, and correspondent, The New Republic

"Richard Wagner: Self-Promotion and the Making of a Brand?" lecture by Nicholas Vazsonyi
October 14, 7:30 p.m.

George Washington University

The Elliot School of International Affairs

1957 E Street NW, Room B12

This event is free and open to the public.

The title of the lecture turns the title of Professor Vazsonyi’s recently published book Richard Wagner: Self-
Promotion and the Making of a Brand (Cambridge UP, 2010) into a question. What assumptions form the basis of
the book? What do we mean by self-promotion, and how special was Wagner’s example? What techniques did he
use to attract an audience? How can one reconcile the thesis that Wagner created a brand, with his own claim that
his aesthetic agenda emphasized the sanctity and purity of art, eschewing all interest in money? What does all this
do to our view of Wagner?

Dr. Nicholas Vazsonyi is Professor of German and Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina. His
published books include Wagner’s Meistersinger: Performance, History, Representation (2003), Richard Wagner:
Self-Promotion and the Making of a Brand (2010), and he was recently invited to be the editor of the Cambridge
Wagner Encyclopedia, set to appear in 2013.

Fashion Fights Poverty, the organization dedicated to raising awareness on the fight against global
poverty through the world of fashion, will host its 6th annual benefit on Friday, October 15, at its new
home, Artisphere, in Arlington, Virginia. Artisphere is one of the first of a new breed of American
cultural centers opening its doors in the DC region.

With cutting edge presentations, this year‘s “Raw” theme is about nurturing untapped creative energy,
asserting creativity over trends, artisanship over mass-production, natural fibers over synthetics,
young ideas over cynicism, and opportunity over poverty.

―Raw‖ is a return to the ―primal‖ state of making clothes and art for both spiritual nourishment and
economic survival. It is a celebration of fashion not as protection from the elements, but as artistic
adornment that expresses a person‘s identity and vision of the world. Proceeds from this year‘s benefit
will support FFP‘s community youth programs including Woodrow Wilson High School and its globally
sustainable projects, aimed at creating income-generating or microfinance opportunities for
individuals/families/communities in developing countries.

For more details or to purchase tickets click here.

Each ticket ($75) includes:

 Private access to selected areas within Artisphere featuring FFP-inspired creations.

 Light hors d'oeuvres.

Morning, Lee Goodwin

Lee Goodwin is a fine art photographer who has concentrated on landscape photography in and around
Washington, DC with particular emphasis on Great Falls, the C&O Canal and the Potomac River. His
photographs have won numerous awards, and have been widely exhibited in solo and group shows in the area.
He makes his living as a partner in the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP.

Marilee Shapiro began her art education at a class being offered in her neighborhood
through the Work Projects Administration (WPA). She then studied with sculptor
Alexander Archipenko. Although her life's work has been in sculpture, at the age of
89 she took her first computer graphics course at the Corcoran and now uses her
computer as an expressive painting tool. Her work is found in the collections of the
Kreeger Museum and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art among other private

Aging Artfully
Why does Iona Senior Services consider the arts important to aging well?
Iona has long known about the link between creative engagement and
healthy aging through our relationship with the late Dr. Gene Cohen. Dr.
Cohen's longitudinal studies of professionally conducted cultural programs
and older adults found significantly better overall health of adults involved
in programs like the one at Iona. Benefits include: significantly fewer
falls and less hip damage, significantly fewer doctor's visits; diminished
use of medications; better scores on the Geriatric Depression Scale and
the Loneliness Scale and increased involvement in activities. In a
community scan completed in late 2007, Iona found that there are no
organizations in the local area focused on helping people age well and live
well through engagement and involvement in the arts. Even though
Washington, DC is rich with cultural and arts organizations, very few are
places or spaces that are accessible to people who are dealing with the
challenges of aging like low vision or memory loss. There are no spaces
that are dedicated solely to the celebration of professional senior artists in
Washington. The Gallery at Iona provides a place where an
intergenerational audience can celebrate older artists' work. Through the
Artist in Residence workshops and art therapy through the Adult Day
Health, Wellness and Arts Center, Iona provides a place where older
people can experience the arts in multifaceted ways and brings awareness A poetry workshop at Iona

AMERICA’S SPECIAL PROVIDENCE: SYMBOLS, FREEMASONS, AND THE NATION'S CAPITAL

A distinguished panel of Masonic leaders—Jeff Ballou, Inessa Mischenko, Alan Peterson, and Marcus Trelaine—will
discuss the secrets architecture of nation’s capital and influential role played by George Washington, other
Freemasons, and African-American astronomer Benjamin Banneker. To explore the meaning of symbols and
Freemasonry, Professor Patrick Mendis briefly presents his book, Commercial Providence: The Secret Destiny of
the American Empire, in which he puts forward a provocative new theory and picks up where Dan Brown’s The
Lost Symbol left off, giving readers a consummate guide to America and its secret mission in the world. In his
foreword to the book, Professor Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, president emeritus of the George Washington
University, writes: “Unlike Dan Brown in The Lost Symbol, Patrick Mendis has a serious scholarly purpose . . . seen
through the eyes of the Founding Fathers and the Masonic Architect of the Universe.” Senator Thomas Daschle
describes the book, “unique and insightful.” Past Masonic Grand Master of DC Akram Elias says that Mendis is a
“mind-reader of the Founding Fathers . . .” Through a vision of Masonic universal brotherhood and E Pluribus
Unum, the author will explain why China is paying for America’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as our
national debt, and arrive at a highly unexpected conclusion only privy to Masonic brethren like George
Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul Revere.

Panel moderated by Alan Patterson

Alan Patterson is the first African-American presiding officer of Capitol Hill’s 205-year old Masonic Naval Lodge No. 4. He is
an information technology project manager with a Fortune 500 company and a former DC Public Schools elementary teacher.

Jeff Ballou is the deputy news editor at Al-Jazeera Television—English and a past presiding officer of the 184-year old Social
Lodge No. 1, the oldest of the Prince Hall (African-American) Masonic lodges in DC.

Inessa Mischenko is the president of Maryland Masonic Research Society and the director of operations at Convergent
Wealth Advisors in Maryland.

Marcus Trelaine is the Worshipful Master of Cincinnatus Lodge and the chief operating officer of the Children’s Rights Council
in DC.
Author Patrick Mendis is an affiliate professor of public and international affairs at George Mason University and a former
American diplomat and military professor. He wrote the book while serving as a visiting foreign policy scholar at Johns
Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.

"The Eye Behind the Camera"

by Elia Kahvedjian

October 22, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The Jerusalem Fund Gallery
24225 Virginia Avenue NW

Washington, DC 20037
No RSVP Necessary

Elia Kahvedjian was born in 1910 in Ourfa, Turkey and

passed away April 1999. When Elia came to Jerusalem, he
was fascinated by Jerusalem’s historical places, landscapes
and characters and began taking pictures in 1924. From
there Elia devoted himself to photography, catching the
scenes and lives of Jerusalem’s streets.

The Palestine Center is an independent think-tank committed to communicating reliable and objective
information about the Palestinian political experience to American policy makers, journalists, students and
the general public. Established in 1991, it is the educational program of the Jerusalem Fund for Education
and Community Development.

The Palestine Center brings together people and resources within the American and Palestinian
communities to educate about Palestine and the Palestinian people's ongoing quest for sovereignty on
their land, civil and political rights and an end to Israeli occupation.

The need for an organization such as The Palestine Center can be found in the effects of the economic,
cultural and political oppression Palestinians have endured and which continues on a daily basis in East
Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the surrounding refugee camps and for Palestinians world-wide
as they struggle to retain their homeland.

Palestinians' ability to maintain their daily lives and strengthen their democratic political system depends
on international humanitarian and non-governmental organizations such as The Palestine Center.

Dear Ashley,

Thank you for your wonderful support that has helped SOME to
provide more than 1,000 meals to the hungry each day,
contributed to the daily treatment of nearly 50 homeless patients
in our Medical and Dental Clinics, and supported the operation of
long-term services like job training and affordable housing.

Last year, we asked you to take part in the Thanksgiving Day

Trot for Hunger to help the growing number of homeless people
in our community. Your enthusiastic response enabled us to
accommodate record demand and kept people from going hungry.

I hope that you will continue to help SOME feed and care for the still growing number of
homeless individuals and families by signing up for SOME‘s 40th Anniversary Thanksgiving Day
Trot for Hunger, and by encouraging others to join or sponsor you.

The Trot for Hunger 5K timed race and family fun walk will be held at 8:30 am on November 25
in West Potomac Park, and will be preceded by the Little Turkey One Mile Fun Run at 8:00 am
(no separate registration is required for the Little Turkey; all Trot for Hunger registrants are
eligible to participate.) Registration is $23 through November 15 and is available online now.

We hope that you will start your Thanksgiving with SOME and thousands of energetic runners
and walkers, trotting to help the homeless and hungry. Please contact Tracy Monson at (202)
797-8806, ext. 1093 or at trotforhunger@some.org for additional information.

October's Fringe Artist is Ben Egerman hailing from Minneapolis,

Minnesota. Ben created The Great Ben Egerman Theatre
Adventure! in the fall of 2009 in order to present his touring
production of its namesake's one-man show, Do Not Kill Me, Killer
Robots. It is driven by his desire to tour a show in a wide variety of
locations, with a low-budget, do-it-yourself aesthetic. The show's set
and props, including a large number of electronic props and sound
equipment, are all built by Ben from scratch, designed to occupy no
more space than a desk, all are able to run off a single electrical
outlet, and easily fit into the trunk of a Honda Civic.

Ben will be back at the Fort for fallFRINGE November 17-21. If you
missed his show during this years Fringe Festival or just want to see it
again... don't miss what the Washington Post called "...solidly funny".

Q As a self-producing artist, what qualities make for a good

show idea in your opinion, and what is typically your first step in realizing your artistic vision?

A ... Sometimes, I'll try damn hard, but realize that things like "The Secret Life of Pirate Jesus" made a
really funny sketch, but a really awful full-length play, and fail to make it past the second scene. P.S. yes,
that's a real example. His ship was called the Holy Cutlass.

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.

The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.

Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.

Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer ‗roles‘ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!

If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An
easy way to make a difference, without even leaving your desk! (more details below).

Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

Lauren

First, THANK YOU so much for your help in making this year‘s BBQ Battle such a success! We could not have done it
without you. Know that you made a difference, and we very appreciative of those who choose to serve with us or on our
behalf.

You are receiving this email because you marked on your Volunteer Form (when you signed up for BBQ Battle) that you
were interested in other volunteer opportunities with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. PLEASE read on about
the process to becoming a regular volunteer with us as well as some general volunteer roles that may interest you.

ABOUT THE PROCESS:

In order to regularly volunteer at a Club, the applicant must complete, sign, and return the application packet. This will
include a registration form (attached), a background investigation consent form (attached), a fingerprint card, AND a copy
of their photo ID. Fingerprint cards can be mailed to the applicant or picked up from a Club location. Attached you will find
a listing of fingerprinting agencies with which you can make an appointment to complete the card.
**Please note that applicants under the age of 18 are not required to undergo a fingerprint check, though they
MUST complete the background investigation consent and permission form for minors and have each form
signed by legal parent/guardian. Be sure to include ALL required information including social security number
and signature(s)**

ABOUT YOUR ROLE:

Volunteer roles vary as specific Club needs change. Applicant's interests and skills may also determine a potential
volunteer role. General opportunities could easily include tutors, mentors, program aides, administrative aides,
maintenance, beautification/repair, events/fundraising, or even pro bono services based on your skills. BGCGW also
offers summer programming at most locations. Summer schedules often times include field trips, educational enrichment
workshops, sports/fitness activities, arts & crafts, and more!

I can help narrow it down by your specific interests or region (MD, DC, VA). Speaking with staff at a specific Club is
another great way to help select a location. We have 8 Clubs in VA, 8 in DC, and 2 in MD. I have attached a listing of our
Clubs for your review. This directory includes Club addresses, phone numbers, and contacts.

Please don't hesitate to let me know how/if I can be of further assistance OR if you have any colleagues/classmates that
may be interested as well. Thanks again for your recent contribution; we hope to see you again soon!!!

Americans for Tax Reform is accepting

applications for fall internships.

Applications are due July 16, 2010.

We believe in a system in which taxes are simpler, fairer, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today. The
government's power to control one’s life derives from its power to tax. We believe that power should be
minimized. ATR was founded in 1985 by Grover Norquist at the request of President Reagan.

Internship Description: Americans for Tax Reform offers the chance to work alongside some of the best political
advocates in Washington, as well as the opportunity for increasing responsibility. Interns are assigned to work on
policy issues side by side with members of our staff. As a key part of the ATR team, interns work on projects such
as the
Taxpayer Protection Pledge(both federal and state candidates pledge not to raise taxes), the American
Shareholders Association(focusing on eliminating the Death Tax, expanding Lifetime Savings Accounts and
Retirement Savings Accounts, and social security reform), and the Cost of Government Day, a report identifying
and calculating government spending as a cost to taxpayers.

Qualifications: Duties include, but are not limited to, legislative and political research, drafting policy briefs,
writing press releases, blogging, attending meetings, and assisting with events. Applicants must be organized,
responsible, independent, and effective under deadlines. Exceptional written and oral communication skills are a
must. Interns are required to have a professional demeanor and phone manner. Applicants should have a strong
interest in tax reform and economic policy, and a fundamental orientation toward liberty. ATR accepts applications
from undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Full-time and part-time interns are paid hourly. The
positions can be taken for credit through the applicant's home university or college, coinciding with spring,
summer, and fall semester dates.

Office Location: Our offices are ideally located at 722 12th Street, NW, in the heart of Washington D.C. ATR is
Metro accessible-located across the street from Metro Center.

Application: Please send a resume, a short writing sample on a topic relating to ATR's mission (no more
than five pages), a cover letter with your interest in ATR outlined, and a list of three references
to:cboyer@atr.org. Please use ‘Internship Application’ as the subject line of your email.

motivated, low-income individuals to be able to achieve the job they want. Our unique model matches volunteer
mentors with motivated participants who work with them over 14 weeks to develop their employability skills,
including hard skills (computer training, resume creation) and soft skills (communication, professional etiquette,
networking). Together, we help economically distressed adults develop the job-search competence, the necessary
soft and hard skills, and the access to professional networks to secure sustainable and career-advancing
employment and be employable in the rapidly changing global economy.

BECOME A MENTOR

The next cycles will begin in March 2010 with options to mentor on Wednesday evenings (6:30-9:00pm, March 3rd
- June 9th) or on Saturday afternoons (11am-2pm, March 6th - June 12th). Both programs are held in downtown
Washington, D.C. If you are interested in being a mentor on one of these programs, you will need to complete an
application at www.streetwisepartners.org/application/volunteer. You are also invited to attend a volunteer

different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager, HR Manager – to give the mentees experience of different types of
interview. Volunteers then give mentees feedback about their performance and their resume.

- SPEED NETWORKING. Listen to mentees' 30 second elevator pitches and give them feedback on how to better
‘sell’ themselves.

CAAB is recruiting volunteers for the DC EITC Campaign tax season (February-April 2010). Our greatest need is for Savings
Promoters – volunteers who would talk to people waiting to get their taxes done about taking money management classes,
savings, direct depositing their refund, and the like. No experience necessary, we train you.

We are also looking for tax preparation volunteers able to work at East of the River tax sites, during daytime hours, or who
speak Spanish, Chinese, or Amharic. It’s a good, low-commitment volunteer opportunity because it’s only 3 months. See the
email below and please pass on to your networks!

Thanks,

Emily Appel

You Can Change Lives,

One Return at a Time

This tax season you can be a part of a tremendous effort that brings over $9 million
into the homes of DC’s low-income working families each year.
Volunteer as a Savings Promoter or Tax Preparer with the
DC Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign
(www.dceitc.org)!

Our Success Depends On Volunteers Like You!

Make a Difference
Each tax return completed by a volunteer preparer can raise a low-income working family’s income by
more than $6,000.

This income boost can help a working family get out of debt, afford winter coats, pay utility bills, and save for
future goals and needs.

Savings Promoter volunteers* will also be on site helping families use their refunds to move up the
economic ladder!

*The Campaign's greatest need is for additional Savings Promoter volunteers.

No Professional Experience Needed

If you know how to complete a tax return, or have done your own taxes, you can volunteer as a tax preparer. All
preparers receive 12 hours of free training (on Saturdays and/or weekdays evenings) and IRS certification in
January.

Or, if you would rather volunteer as a Savings Promoter, you will receive 4 hours of interactive training to enable
you to help clients save their refunds, enroll in Money Management classes and credit counseling, and even open
direct deposit accounts!

Opportunities for Everyone

In addition to tax preparers, we need volunteer interpreters and Savings Promoter
volunteers to educate clients about savings products and free financial resources.

Volunteers at some sites will even help eligible clients register for Food Stamps.

Flexible Hours & Locations

Volunteer for 3-4 hours a week from January 30 through mid April at one of 12 sites throughout the DC area. Most
sites are open on evenings and/or weekends.
